It's important to remember that Tony Iommi wrote this in 1971. As Rob Zombie famously said: "Every cool riff has already been written by Black Sabbath. Anything everyone else does is just basically ripping it off. You're either playing it faster or slower or backwards, but they wrote it first."

The original Sabbath is the greatest thing that ever happened to this planet lol. This is my favorite riff (Also Eddie Van Halen's..at least at one time. VH backed them up in '78). The opening was at first a different song but was then used for the intro of "Into the Void". I kind of wish they left it out and got right to the main riff immediately. Bill Ward has said that this was the hardest song he ever played drums to and that it took him forever to finally get the beat..he was very close to giving up. Thank God he didn't because this is one of the greatest songs of all time.

Bill Ward was never close to giving up. Eddie had some help. Then burned out completely blaming Roth for their stagnation. No, he was a drunk. Drunk people get caught in a never ending loop of used info, their brains deprived of the ability to create anything new. After Women and Children just another rock band. Eddie wanted to call it Van Hagar. Sammy didn’t need his name attached to the drunkards band. Losers

What bothers me about these "best of" or "top" discussions is that there is always such a time bias. It seems like the greatest of all time, the untouchables, are from so way back in the day. That immediately tickles my spidey sense and makes me think that there is some bad juju. No one is trying to say Bill Ward and Black Sabbath weren't incredibly influential artists, but what does top drummer even mean? Lets talk about the true contemporaries of any given band, lets compare their music and see why most artists aren't humble because they're pretending, but because they remember the other guys and gals who were great too.

Wow !! I always loved Bill Ward's drumming, one of my Fave along with Ginger Baker. I loved sabbath from the beginning 1969. I'm 74 years young. I bought the first album and listened to it and went back and bought 4 more and finally wore them all out !!, and bought the whole Sabbath Catalog on CD. Great video I was amazed with the software and almost mesmerized bt it. Loved your energy too. Keep it up !!

You have officially completed Level 1 of Black Sabbath and now hold the rank of the "Inverted Cross". Congratulations! You have also unlocked Vol. 4 reactions: Snowblind, Supernaut, Under The Sun and Cornucopia, the latter song known for nearly breaking Bill Ward because of the difficulty he had in perfecting the challenging drum patterns.

To think that the drumming of Gene Kruppa, Buddy Rich and other Jazz greats are such great influences in the genesis of heavy metal just blows my mind. I'm 57 but I continue to appreciate the greatness of Black Sabbath even more. I have loved this band for over 40 years but I never really knew about all the heavy musical influences until I was much older and breakdowns like this really give so much insight. Thank you for another great breakdown!

April 2022? Jesus guy i got hooked when i was 8 years old in 2005. Thats worse than saying you've never heard tool until 2022. As a multi-instrumest for nearly 20 years, im surprised you hadn't heard this song up to this point. Its a masterclass in silky drumming and stanky riffs. Its so schwangy and groovy, its simple but it does the job. It makes me shiver every time i hear it. Black Sabbath is king.

I thought for years that Sabbath could never be copied because of their "sloppy" timing--and that was a good thing. I remember thinking that Faith No More's version of War Pigs, although technically perfect, just sounded empty. Andrew, thank you for putting into context why. Your technical descriptions are fantastic. I am a non-drummer and don't know why drums sound different. You have opened up a new world. Bill Ward has swing! I used to think his timing was just not great, even amateurish, because he was just some bloke from the Mid-lands. Nothing could have been further from the truth. He is a highly informed drummer using techniques all those 80s and 90s drummers had no idea about. I need to get into jazz drummers more now...

Great reaction. Bill Ward is such a great drummer. I've been a Sabbath/Ozzy fan since I was a kid in 1979. He was the first drummer I 'noticed' was using double kick stuff regularly. You should check out some of Tommy Aldridge's stuff. I feel he really helped evolve the double kicks in a hard rock setting through the late 70's and 80's. He's a brutally hard hitter and an amazing performer well worth checking out if you are not familiar with him. His drum live concert drum solos are (IMO) legendary.

The drummers of this time Paice, Bonham, Mitchell all came from a jazz background and Bill Ward was no exception. The first drummer he tried to emulate was Gene Krupa and this carried throughout his years in Black Sabbath where you can hear him swing even on the heavier tracks but more so on songs like Air Dance on Technical Ecstasy, a throwaway album for many but personally I am a big fan. You even get some lead vocals from Bill.

Other bands can try to copy the heavy sludge. But they lack a drummer with a deep grounding in jazz (gene krupa, buddy rich, etc) and that bouncy swing and vibe, so when the new bands drummer plays identical to the riff it just sounds like math rock, and not the rock/blues/jazz styles also underlying Sabbath. Please jump ahead to the Sabotage album (Symptom of the Universe, Thrill of it All). Also despite the band's name and heavy imagery, if you listen to Geezer's lyrics, it's still hopeful and with a twinge of the hippie era outlook, especially on this album (though, yes more ominous!).

Great to hear Bill getting the recognition he deserves the man is a monster on drums and for too long was Black Sabbaths "skin beater" now people see/hear for the amazing talent he is. Nobody could replace him. No Bill no Sabbath. My old man an ex Army Major read an article on Sabbath being Satanists in the Telegraph in which they quoted one line of lyrics off Into the Void "leave the earth to Satan and his slaves" then he lectured me on what a bad band they were. After an argument I stormed upstairs got the vinyl and made him read the lyrics and get the song and it's meaning. I got a grudging apology which made my day. Have you reacted to Children of the Grave yet?
