Can confirm, after attempting to learn even just the intro to this song, Dave Grohl drum parts are not easy. You are 100% correct. No, they are not complicated licks/chops, but to play it clean, with feel, with that hi-hat going, at that tempo...sweating.

Grohl played with QOTSA (Queens Of The Stone Age) a lot, also teamed up with guitarist/genius Josh Homme in the band Them Crooked Vultures. Everything Josh Homme touches is 100% authentic Rock. He played with Kyuss, started QOTSA and Them Crooked Vultures, was responsible for The Desert Sessions (up to 12 now), he also helped a friend start The Eagles of Death Metal. Wow.

I bought this album in 2002 because Dave was drumming on it and I have to say it surprised me. It was so different, even to Nirvana. I've listened to it so many times over the last 20 years and for me the drumming is one of the highlights. Also, it would be worth reviewing God is the Sun by QOTSA, which I'm pretty sure is also Dave. It's in 3/4 which is really unusual for a rock song.

No the look from the bass player is of surprise. Because dave pinned the tempo way faster than usual on purpose. And he was laughing and they were like woah wait up. So ya thats what i got from the looks. These guys are way too cool to be looking with smiles of glee

Totally kick ass / I loved that line up of Queens; heaviest stoner rock ever. And I love Troy Van Leuween’s other worldly space vibe - like Ace Frehley; enigmatic. All the dudes have such strong characters - all of them are stars on the stage. Just fantastic.

I may be wrong but I think this was the first time Dave had played drums live in the UK since the Nirvana days. He's really firing on all cylinders here. Someone once described Dave's drumming as playing riffs, not beats and I kinda agree with that.

@@AndrewRooneyDrumsand conversely, his guitar playing is essentially percussive, he's described how each string of the guitar is to him like the components of the drum kit.

At the end you said Dave has a known bag of tricks and I was commenting live that playing the tricks and doing it live in front of millions of people for millions of dollars ... I need to bridge the gap between those two concepts

Hey Andrew! 1) check out the other live songs from this gig! 2) Regarding the end but; Grohl also likes to seemingly “speed up” by swapping out some bonham triplet with a 8/8 pattern HHHF. Love your stuff. Keep it up!

In terms of drummers who just sound like a sample every time they hit a drum, I can't think of many, but super underrated drummer who does this is James Price from nothing but thieves. That dude is just so tight live. Nothing But Thieves - Ban All The Music live at the O2 arena, it's brilliant.
