Thanks for the video, I enjoyed the analysis! On the topic of only so many grooves, I would enjoy your take on Bernard Purdie’s style and execution. Being a Steely Dan nerd, that is my context but I’m sure that is only part of his picture. Maybe you could enlighten us?
I’d throw Lauren Hill in there as well. Sure, Beyoncé had the better vocal range maybe. But the pure soul Erykah had. And Lauren with both her solo stuff and earlier with the fugees I’d still listen to over Beyoncé. If only Erykah and Lauren didn’t let the stress get to them they would’ve been bigger. But they got that negative vibe attached to them when they would miss a lot of shows, or show up 2 or 3 hours late. Kinda hindered their careers when they lost a lot of their fanbase. But that never made them any less talented. Beyoncé is a performer, where as Erykah, Lauren, and even Jill Scott are pure artists.
Scott Storch was a founding member of ‘Roots’ and made this beat with Quest. And then he left the group and made 4000 hit records as a producer lol. Philly love ❤️
As a bassist I love this style of drummer more than any of the flashier drummers out there. Groove is so important as a safety net for us. Love this man
I'm 4 years late, but you played in Baltimore? My dad was a drummer in Baltimore for a couple different bands, with his main original one called Air Heavy. He did a lot of gig stuff and cover bands. Honestly I think he could have been famous. I really regret not having recorded him playing drums in his basement. He died 10 years ago. I remember showing him Zach Hill playing a set handcuffed and Dad wasn't into it but he thought it was neat. I miss him a lot.
cuz quest was DJing around philly, NYC & all over in the late 90s & early 2000s even still as The Roots had already come up and become somewhat famous. I used to see him on DJ promos all the time in philly
Hear, hear ... music is NOT written in 'stone' nor is it continually original as some seem to think it should be .. this is great btw, imo - love the swing and feel ... :-)
How have I never seen this performance before? Oh my god. Eternal. I always kinda thought of Things Fall Apart as their transitionary album between their original sound and their later sound. It’s so perfect. This really took me back, man. Love.
Appreciate the video and your commentary @junkdrummer tv. But you totally missed the fact that they went into “Slipping Into Darkness” by War at the 8:00 minute mark (of your vid). While certainly not a flawless execution of incorporating that groove into their arrangement, it’s and effort that is much appreciated by a music lover like myself.
I attended a show in NY at the "Town Hall" around 2014 where Questlove and Bobby Mcferin were performing in sort of a duel fashion, drums versus voice and it was an awesome totally unique experience! Quest is the man indeed, but Bobby got the best of him that night lol
He is seriously like having a personal metronome behind you though. Cool and fun fills and stuff are great, but some amazing drummers can really make a song sound like crap if they’re trying to show off. That’s why you get a solo my man. Save it lol. The best drummers for me (a bass player) are the guy’s that sat right in that pocket and kinda twiddled the outer edge just a lil. My best friend and I didn’t even meet til college, but I played bass and he played drums so one night we decided to mess around at this party where they had a band set up. It was our freshman year and we had never heard eachother play or even attempted to play together until that night. The minute we started jamming together I just thought “ok, that explains why we became friends so easily”. It was like we’d been playing together for years. We would just look at each other and give that little nod and just knew right where we were going. You get a good percussion section to be that anchor for your band, it might sound to the average dude like they’re just going through the motions. But to a musician that can hear the perfection of the beat in time. That gives me goosebumps lol. Hey, on that note. I’m not sure if you follow any of the new stuff out now. But if you wanna see a dude that has the timing of a Swiss timepiece, and a band that is killing it with the soul/funk/surfy instrumental vibe you gotta check out ‘Khruangbin’. Donald ‘dj’ Johnson reminds me a lot of Quest. But this guy might even be a bit better if that’s possible. And hot bass girl so there’s that as well lol. Check out this live performance of their song ‘August’. You’ll find yourself in a RU-vid marathon watching this guy after that haha. Good stuff my dude. Keep it up. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6moW0BXmfe8.html
Do you listen to DC's Go Go music? A lot of percussion with all the groups. Check out Chuck Brown, EU, Junkyard and BYB Backyard with Anwan Glover better known as Slim Charles from the wire.
@Junkdrummer TV yes, the late great Chuck Brown. One of his sons played football for Virginia Tech. There are some videos of groups in the area performing. The most recognized RU-vid video is of Go Go at the Capital Center where when growing up teens all across the DMV would show up to see all the bands performing live. It also took place at area parks and even RFK stadium. There are artists as well on Spotify.
You know what I got from this video? Yummies! Another 2 for your bottomless pit of people to review. 1- Manu Katche with Peter Gabriel Secret World Tour 2- Nick Collins. I just found out he drums for his dad Thanks Steve
His book is almost as insightful on the essence of what makes a song work and what makes musicians get excited as David Byrne's 'How Music Works'. I saw The Roots live more than any band besides maybe Clutch, and yeah, Jimmy Fallon... meh... BUT, I'm very happy those guys don't have to grind on the road for 300 days a year. They earned their spot. It was a great career move. Before The Roots was just Thought & Quest because the road destroyed it, they made a clever left turn. Kudos.
Had stop drumming for the last 4 years after my son was born (my drum room became his bedroom, small house) but since I've moved into a bigger house I finally set up my pos old maxwin kit. It's been hard going but since I started just playing along with the Roots albums I can feel my skills finally starting to return. Also, first live show I ever went to/and still best show I've ever seen
Love your channel man! Please please check out Alethea from Eloy Casagrande - maybe one of the best drummers out there. I cannot figure out that groove / time signature, would love your input on it!
You gotta check out Danny Carey from Tool playing Pneuma. I've been waiting for decent drum footage of Danny for longer than I've been waiting for the new album. This is like Christmas.
Check out the song, "The Phoenix" by Pepper. Yesod Williams kills it on the drums in a song that feels dissimilar to any other song by the punk/reggae band. I doubt you would be able to find a video to analyze, but I bet you would enjoy the song.
