Jens Kidman is one of the best Heavy Metal "singers" ever in my opinion. Absolutely no compromises, no dynamics, no clean parts, no loud/quiet parts, no low or high parts, just "in your face" all the time, but with an impressive and matchless rhythmical precision, like said before, like an instrument or like a part of the drumset. He has so much unhuman energy and a very individual kind of heavy metal "singing" in comparison to other metal vocalists. Absolut outstanding, and beside that, a very funny and sympathic person.

Loved the calm insightful reaction. Respect for someone not used to this music. As a long time Meshuggah fan, while MANY will recommend you the infamous ‘stamina miracle’ Bleed, I’d personally say check out Dancers to a Discordant System. It highlights one of Thomas’ absolute strengths: slower cyclical grooves that are downright danceable. I’ve met them and ‘groove metal’ is a description they gave their blessing, rather than ‘math metal’ which they dislike, meshuggah’s all about feel, not calculating. iconic ‘old’ gems that highlights the same groovey quality of Thomas are New Millenium Cynanide Christ and Rational Gaze. They started out as more thrashy and every album explores their trendsetting 8string guitar sound in a new way. On a sidenote: thomas also writes the lyrics and they have fantastic ones. Meshuggah’s worth delving into, have fun!

Wow, thats a really open minded response re the vocals in extreme metal. Most people are like "Uggh, metal is shit because you can't understand what they're singing" But like you rightly pointed out, the vocals go with the music, and yes you're right, the more you listen to the bands, the more you don't really notice it and it becomes the norm. The vocals are an instrument in extreme metal. They're not used in the same way as 'normal' music vocalists. In metal, the instruments are the key focus, the vocals are kind of secondary. Where as in popular music it's all about the vocalist.

It's boring, rote, no tone, no rhythm, illegible. As intricate as this drumming is, I can't even get through half a song. It sounds like they lazily spent about 6 seconds coming up with something for the vocalist to repetitively croak out. What a great review. You are definitely an opened minded individual. Metal is like a highway, its difficult to adjust when dropped off in the middle of high speed traffic without taking the slow on-ramp first. Meshuggah is a gem and one of a kind. They're one of those bands that actually pull off live performances better than the record. Not to mention, an out of this world lighting show.

I highly recommend checking out the drummer for Car Bomb. He does essentially the exact opposite thing from Tomas. Tomas plays over the bar line phrases while maintaining 4/4. Elliot Hoffman and Car Bomb actually practice extensively by watching each other because they use extremely odd phrases and time signatures without a steady tempo throughout the song. The band has said they have to watch each other and learn how to feel the quick note rate changes and time signature changes. Definitely check it out

Tomas Haake has a totally unique playing style, is a legend in the metal scene and it's always great to see new people exposed to the band. Doing it with a cup of tea in your hand is top class :D If I recall from an interview, the left hi-hat is mostly played with his foot though I have seen him play it with sticks a few rare times. If you like this, check out Elliot Hoffman and Carbomb. I recommend the tune "Black Blood".

@annihilatedcanadian6506 4 года назад
@@richardharrold9736 You'll have to excuse my ignorance on this topic but are you referring to the "real world" drum sounding worse from the sampled recorded version? Like the sonic separation of kick and snare? If so doesn't this have alot to do with actual "room" you are playing in such as a hall or venue of some type? I'm very uneducated on the pros and cons of sampling kits, as this video in particular sounded extremely full and well rounded.
@richardharrold9736
@richardharrold9736 4 года назад
@@annihilatedcanadian6506 basically, every single drum on that kit is triggered, and he mostly uses stock heavily gated trigger sounds with no dynamics or anything, which is why it always sounds so bloody flat... whereas, among RU-vid drummers, Meytal Cohen has an amazing natural-sounding kit that's properly miced to sound as good as possible.
@annihilatedcanadian6506
@annihilatedcanadian6506 4 года назад
@@richardharrold9736 So on the album "Empath" Devin hired a couple drummers, one being 66Samus and the other being Anup Sastry. I just watched the "Hear Me" playthrough, then went and watched the Anup Sastry playthrough of "Singularity" on the same album and Sastry's kit does indeed sound snappier and crisper. After you pointed out the sampling, I did noticed the drums having a sort of flatter, (for lack of a better term) even sound. As a casual observer I didn't pick up on that at all. I just presumed that "Hear Me' was in fact recorded in a more muted tone to set them into the background a little more as to not over power the music. I hope I made a little sense there.
@NuclearHeadshot
@NuclearHeadshot 3 года назад
@@richardharrold9736 agreed. However, he's addressed the use of samples as a necessity - he simply doesn't have the time to edit his drums every time, and he does online lessons on another kit which uses most of the mics he has. It's one thing to make time for editing if the mics are placed well from the beginning, but having to move them between kits that much is just too much time.
