*Hello Andrew,* So glad you are introduced to Opeth with "Ghost of Perdition" as it shows all their extremes in "1" song. I call their sound "Opeth Weather" as the music reflects their album covers, and an Autumn/Fall feel. They are the epitome of "Brvtality meets Beauty". They started as a Death Metal band in 1995 (which had a bit of influence in "Black Metal"), for the 1st 3 albums, with various members. But even in those earlier days, they had a "progressive" side to them, as well as a "Gothic" tinge, which made them very different than all the other Death Metal bands (Acoustic Guitar intros/interludes or passages, with quiet Piano accents). For their 4th album "Still Life", the progressive elements were getting more prevalent. And so it went, but always with the Death Metal "Growl" and Clean vocals throughout. So by "Heritage" (2011), they dropped the "cookie monster vocals" for the melodic, as Singer/Guitarist Mikael Akerfeldt was wanting to move away from Death Metal. Now the band is considered "Prog Metal", but with a retro feel of Deep Purple/Dio-era Rainbow, and Uriah Heep, with tinges of Jazz/Fusion and Rock. Yes, their Death Metal was not in your typical Death Metal band of the 90's and early 2000's, other bands that utilized the Clean and Rough vocals were Edge of Sanity, Soilwork (with keyboards), Gardenian, Extol, Scar Semmetry and a few others. But nowadays its become almost expected. There are even bands that sound like an Opeth Death Metal "genre", but influencing and inspiring a new sound. Personal fave albums are; "My Arms, Your Hearse", "Still Life", "Blackwater Park, "Deliverance"/"Damnation", "Ghost Reveries" and "Watershed". I HIGHLY suggest you listen to the albums on headphones while relaxing. Note: I actually like the "Roundhouse Tapes/Live" version of _Ghost of Perdition_ the best because of Akerfeldt's growl has its full power much like on the album (Ghost Reveries). By the time he did this Red Rocks version, he already had 3 albums under his belt without doing the growls, only live, for the now, "older" songs. And "Peter Lindgren" was the 2nd guitarist and "Per Wiberg" keyboardist/back-up vocalist, and "Martin Lopez" on drums, on that particular album & tour (But Axenrot replaced Lopez on the Roundhouse Tour, I believe while they were working on the album "Watershed"). Btw - the"Lights" were probably a Lighting guys _fingers._ If you find the Lighting Operator for "Meshuggah", you will see that the guy _plays_ the lighting controls like a keyboard! Its amazing to watch. Now you need to see the previous drummer _Martin Lopez_ (founder of his current band "Soen") and his style of playing performing "Deliverance", or other tracks on the Live video "Lamentations".

@@mvunit3 Yes, my favorite works were the era of the Martins...The Ghost Reveries DVD has an extra where you can see Martin working on parts for the record and it's insane the level of musicianship this music is not only capable of but capable of driving its performers. A friend of mine once asked what death metal I liked and the first two bands out of my mouth were Cryptopsy and Opeth...he nodded sagely and replied "Opeth is the Led Zeppelin of Death Metal" and he's still not wrong even though several releases have happened since he asked me that question, that night, in that bar. :-) PS - Per is fucking hilarious in every B roll scene I've seen him in.

The drummer is Martin Axenrot, he’s a great drummer but you also have to listen to the former drummer before him, Martin Lopez. Lopez wrote and composed this song on drums. Both are sensational drummers. Opeth are a Swedish progressive metal band now but were a melodic death metal band. They have gotten more to rock sound now, but their earlier stuff had folk and orchestral sounds to it.

I played a festival with Opeth back in 2008ish. I got to watch from the side of the stage and when one of their amps died, the drummer and keyboard player gave the crowd 10 minutes of improvised jazz. It was the most mindblowing 10 minutes of my life, the sheer level of talent between them was out of this world!! I'd never heard drumming like it. Also, backstage, they were the most down-to-earth and humble band I have ever met P.S. I almost forgot, during this "jazz session" Mikael stood and told jokes over it. Was surreal.

Good reaction. "Axe" is brilliant! But Martin Lopez, Opeth's previous drummer, was truly the soul of the band IMO. His groove and feel were impeccable!... He brought the true jazzy fusion like feel to Opeth's heavy death metal music. Even this very song 'ghost of perdition' was recorded in studio by Lopez. So the drum parts and transitions were all his genius... You should check out Opeth's live performance of 'Deliverance' at Shepherd's Bush Empire, London, with Lopez. I don’t usually watch reaction videos, but I had the pleasure to attend this show!! I’ll give you a few facts... 1. Red Rocks is in Denver Colorado. It a a big city, but Opeth normally draws about 2,000 here. One of our promoters had the great idea to put them at Red Rocks and made it happen. I met so many people that flew in from all over the US to see such a legendary band at a legendary venue. 2. It was only about 55F when Opeth took the stage. Concert was early May, and the weather is pretty random. 3. This was my 6th time (now up to 7) seeing Opeth. They always bring something new to the table and change around the set list a lot. 4. The Blu-ray of this is fantastic! 5. The wind kept blowing the haze off the stage, so whoever edited the video also needs a raise, because they made the light job look killer! 6. Check out Gojira live at Red Rocks as well. Same concert! Both bands filmed. 7. Mix engineer David Castillo is amazing. He mixed the Leprous DVD, mixed Whitechapel - The Valley, produced Soilwork’s “The Ride Majestic, and the last two Leprous records, and has done a lot with Katatonia and so many others. 8. Look up URM academy. They actually have a mixing lesson on the first song from this DVD. Castillo gives the lesson himself Uhh. I’m sure I can think of more. Haha. Ask away.

I know I'm a bit late to the party, but Opeth was the reason I started drumming. My older brother by a year was a bassist and metal enthusiast. He introduced me to the world of metal, but Opeth was something special to me. They were so accessible. They had clean and heavy vocals and drums, with intricate rhythms and heavy double bass. I was a freshman in high school in 2003 when Deliverance came out. I spent the whole year just leaning beats off of their title track, but I was incapable of doing any kind of fill. I was so new that any fill, no matter how simple, would ruin my timing. My older brother gathered some friends to practice Deliverance with us, and I tried my best to keep up. We ended up playing our school's talent show mid 2004, and luckily enough, I didn't screw up (still no fills). I'm sure it just as bad as most people are imagining, but it felt great to us. I still like to jam to the ending riff of Deliverance and I hope you have the chance to hear it. Thank you Andrew for reacting to this. It looks like you thoroughly enjoyed hearing Opeth for the first time. Love the content man, keep it up!

Opeth are a band that have constantly changed sounds within their own world of music and are an absolute awe live. I have seen them plenty of times and always walk away stunned. There is a big catalogue to discover with them, Damnation being my favorite album.

The growls on this record - and any live appearance in the past ca 10 years for that matter - are weak compared to him pre-2010. Probably because of their style change from death metal to progrock. He's much more into rock than brutal metal these days.

You should see that concert in its full length. Absolutely stunning from start to finish. Insane level of production, musicianship and scene. Though not the best focus on the drums in particular, but the dvd has its moments on that part, too Welcome to the Opeth catalogue. You have much to learn, young one :)

Andrew, I've been following your channel for a while now. I love your content and authenticity. I'm not actually a drummer, I'm a guitarist, but I have a fond reverence for the art of drumming. Short story: I live in Colorado and was actually at this show. Opeth is one of my favorite bands (if not my favorite band) of all time, and seeing your enthusiasm, awe, and excitement over this track in particular brought a lot of joy to my heart, especially knowing I was able to be there in that moment, watching them alongside those massive stone archways in the beautiful and amazing Red Rocks Amphitheater. You expressed what I think many Opeth fans felt the first time they heard this song and band. I appreciate what you do, and keep up the good work. Thanks so much.

Opeth can go from brutal to beautiful at the drop of a hat. Live, absolutely stellar. I' prefer the newer, more progressive stuff with clean vocals, but the earlier stuff is incredible as well.

I was at this show. What an amazing night that was. It was a pretty cold night here in Denver. When Gojira opened up for them, there was still daylight and they had bursts of flame frequently when certain beats would hit. If you were close enough to the stage, you could feel the warmth from the flames. No jacket necessary during their set. Not the case during Opeth’s set. The sun set and a cold wind started blowing.

I've been listening to Opeth since I was 12 years of age, I'm Irish. I was playing Call of Duty 1 on the PC quite competitively and opponent was called Opeth. I remember the map, where I first saw the name Opeth - the map was called Carentan. I wanted to know more about what this word meant, and so I looked it up and I found a song called To Bid You Farewell, from the album Morningrise, I don't know why this was the first one I found, but it was. And I fell in love, the progression into the chorus was absolutely mindblowing, and I had just lost my older brother in tragic circumstances, so hearing music like this really helped me. I didn't have any bereavement counselling or anything, I felt very alone in the world and confused at losing my brother at such an early age. Anyway, I became a drummer, continued gaming, I got into a lot of metal bands such as Opeth, In Flames and then into stuff like Windir. I remember going to see Opeth in 2005/6 in London, when they played Blackwater Park in the Mean Fiddler. It was absolutely spectacular and one of the best experiences of my life. I've seen them a few times since, including Radio City Music hall in NYC. Metal will always hold a special place in my life, but Opeth, in particular, brings back memories, thoughts, emotions in so many ways. When I listen to some albums it literally brings me back to places, events, feelings and emotions. Isn't it amazing that music can do that? Opeth's progressive element is so amazing, the earlier album's folk entwines, the sheer masterpieces of Still Life and Deliverance in terms of riffs and drumming patterns. Really great to see a lot of people reviewing Opeth these days, this music will never die for me. Take care

This I can second. My brother and I were there as well. He lowers his head when he growls, resulting in them being more quiet. When he sings, he raises his head to the mic and it was more loud.

Interesting side note as you’re new to Opeth - being from Sweden, English is not mikael’s first language (the singer). A lot of the European metal bands use English because it tends to be more widely known, but also have said it’s easier for lyric writing. Also please do a reaction to anything from their royal albert hall performance. It’s all killer.

Opeth are in a league of their own. Been a fan for 20 years but their newest album is - to me - the absolute pinnacle of excellence. The last song on the album ("All things must end" or something. The swedish title is "Allting tar slut") Is some of the best music my ears have ever heard. Also, Axe, the drummer and Mikael the vocalist have both worked on Bloodbath at different times, a pretty cool "superband" with rotating members, that does old school death metal. Wait till you hear Opeth with Axe writing the drums too. (This song was written during the first drummer's tenure, Lopez. Great drummer too. But Axe is so much more versatile)

I saw Opeth here in Vegas for the Blackwater park tour and to this day they are the best show I’ve ever seen. 2.5 hours of them just killing it. I’ll never forget Mikel in his soft spoken voice saying, “this is a new song from our upcoming album. It’s called deliverance....” and for 13 or so minutes I had like..a musical religious experience. I know everyone in the world who loves music says this, but..ya gotta see em live. Loved the reaction. Helping keep music love alive. I dig it \m/
