To the teacher, as a professional yourself, I respect your humility and admiration for Larnell's capabilities. One true sign of a professional is to be humble enough to admire the work of others. This concept may be difficult for others to comprehend, but to compliment another doesn't dimish one's own ability. It shows, instead, that you are a true artist who loves and appreciates the craft to which you have dedicated your time, energy and hard work. To do so takes vulnerability, strength and character, coupled with a strong sense of self. That sir, is commendable. #Respect

Yes, Steve said that he was "getting out of the way", that's one way to put it, I personally thought "I love that the whole time he's not talking all the space, it would be so easy to do that… he's just giving space to other band members when it's important, and that's the sign of a great artist. He knows it's not about him." And it all refers to the same thing, respect for other parts.

My favourite thing watching reactions to great players by other players is that moment of "Ohhhh i love drums". I love seeing people enjoying their craft and enjoying other people being great at the craft like, it's just so much fun. Seeing people nerd out about their field, like damn that's what I live for. Whether it's linguists obsessing over languages, rabbis nerding out over obscure religious law rulings and commentary, or musicians getting their minds blown by other musicians, it's just the best damn thing in the world.

@@CC-tw6su I'd hope im at least decent, been playing for over 2 decades. This is basic intermediate level stuff. Once you learn enough theory it's not hard to predict what is most likely to come next. It's definitely not a beginner song, but it's also not something that is overly complex to the point of not being predictable. Regardless my point is if you have been playing this isn't much different than watching a guitarist noodle over a backing track. It seems impressive to a laymen because there is a mystique of complexity to a person who is foreign to music and music theory.

@@zephirol4638 I am a musician for the last 35 years, I play 5 instruments with proficiency, and hack about on the drums. I am also a 20 year club dj. I will tell you this. There are at least 10 professional drummers and analysts, on RU-vid, with their entire lives dedicated to drum/music/writing/arraigning, all with actual careers, and they ALL say this is one of the greatest things one will ever see while also calling larnell one of the greatest of all time... And you an anonymous troll hiding behind a faceless picture comes to say its intermediate. You are just an asshole. A troll. A narcissistic sociopath. I appreciate your type as they always expose who they are. So sad they feel the need to denigrate the skills and abilities of strangers. Hope the serotonin boost was worth it troll. Exposed and shunned.
@zephirol4638
@zephirol4638 3 года назад
@@joshuarichard2509 obviously you're not if you honestly think that understanding music theory and having a musical ear equates to anything near " the geatest thing you will ever see" you can literally find 5 y/o's all over youtube doing this, and some at an even higher proficiency. i'm not knocking the ability shown, just the ridiculous amount of hype for something anyone with a couple years under their belt SHOULD be able to do if they're taking their practice serious on any level. Also you clearly have never heard of the term publicity leech. famous people will praise and talk about anything if it gives them attention. An you can find countless examples of such, so that argument is quite piss poor. lastly that silly temper tantrum of a bitch fit doesn't validate your point and in fact shows your hypocrisy in the very same comment. Quit embarrassing yourself.

The title of the track is "Chick's Pain" which is a play on the song definitely being inspired by "Spain." Larnell references the title at the beginning of the full video and seems a little confused by it. Since he hadn't actually heard the track yet I don't think he got the reference. He seemed to have a little lightbulb moment when the keys player quoted it during their solo.

I think you got to the heart of it. Creativity and resourcefulness comes not from what someone teaches you but from how you file all the little knowledge nuggets away in your brain and from applying them and critiquing the results. The best studio musicians have listened enough to be able to predict the future most of the time and then they only need to remember when they're wrong.

Really appreciate how he doesn’t ride the ride or hug the bell even though he’s playing a Latin type feel he’s not using any one bell too much or not quite enough just like Jaco P’s harmonics; which makes this even more powerful a performance as he’s literally evoking an influence through a musician’s playing inspired by another on a different instrument entirely. Yeesh Also great video, glad you stay hyped about this good ass content, and with great articulation. Especially regarding a hard to teach or discuss idea.

Man... this might be the 2nd video of yours youtube has recommended to me, n i'm glad they did. I played bass for like 7-8 years thru middle school n high school... i desperately wanted to play the drums, but the school advised against it given i was in a wheelchair, n the need of feet movement n stuff is so necessary, n they talked me into the bass.. I picked it up pretty quickly, however, our school wasnt that big, n for some reason they coupled the bass in w/the orchestra class, n NOT band.. (which to me played all the cool songs)... n after the 1st year or 2 of me playing, i had to undergo massive surgery n was taken out of school for over 6+ months, n quickly fell behind.. N one flaw about my personality is if i do something i want to do it good.. n i want to be "one of the best" or... not best.. but sufficient enough where i didnt feel as tho i'm useless or meaningless to be there or participate. N when the 2 other top guys quickly surpassed me, i slowly started losing interest... n going thru your teens at that time n dealing with all the other mental/hormonal changes going on in my life, it was a nasty time for me... and i fell into a real bad cycle of habbits n meeting wrong people n i kinda squandered a potential talent i once had. Same w/my drawing, n other musical abilities i felt i had n could have developed. I always wanted to learn guitar, n few christmas's ago, bought myself a cheap one, n got the game rocksmith to see if i could learn using it. Was slowly picking it up, but the biggest hurdle i found was holding the guitar in my current wheelchair isnt as comfortable or as easy as it was when i was younger, n found it extremely fatiguing n awkward for my fret hand given how much i have to counter-balance myself w/my left arm to begin with, bu then to hold it up n off my wheel makes me feel unbalanced n uncomfortable, n as a result i end up gripping my fret board as a way to tense up my muscles to counter-effect the balance awkwardnesses i feel n makes moving the movement of my hand up n down the board freely and fluidly extremely difficult n needless to say i kinda gave up on it. :( I was good enough @ the bass back in school n the teacher had enough faith in me n my abilities that they bought me a special several thousand dollar ($6000) bass guitar for me that had a unique ability to also be played with a bow like the upright basses (as it had a slightly curved arch to the strings like the uprights did), but had a more 'rock guitar' wedged type body design that made it easier for me to hold in my lap than the traditional guitar/bass body design. which awkwardly the curved parts of the body tend to rest where my wheels are n causes me to have to hold it messed up to begin with.. combined w/my balance issues n ugh... I WISH SO BADLY i had pics of that bass guitar... or what it was called... or anything about it... i've talked about it so much n have no idea if i have any pics of it.. as my parents never gave a shit about my music... only my mom ever show'd up to the concerts... :-\ another reason i lost interest... i never had support or ppl backing up my choices... Anyways, sorry.. i know none of this matters to u, i just... felt like sharing for whatever reason. Ty for the content, u got a new subscriber. I love how u speak, n how much passion is behind it. N u speak what ur heart feels, bad language n all, n it's a genuine warm hearted feeling it gives me. So glad i found ur channel. :) TY RU-vid computer overlords. U are learning me well.
