As I told Rick in the comments on his video, he should have included Cozy Powell’s intro for “Stargazer” on Rainbow’s album “Rising” as an honourable mention at the very least. (If you haven’t listened to Cozy Powell, that’s a great album to start with. He also does excellent work on Robert Plant’s first two solo albums - which also feature some excellent drumming by Phil Collins, btw.) Another good one would be Brian Downey’s intro on Thin Lizzy’s “Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed” and “Rise and Dear Demise of the Funky Nomadic Tribes”.

we start many of our sets (rock/Hardrock coverband) with that song and its always a pleasure to see the excitement in peoples faces when they hear that intro... i strongly advice to warm your hands up before that song though

Jack Jones and I went to college together. He was one of the few people who knew and loved Rush as much as I did, and I remember jamming on some Rush grooves together in our band room. Even back then (about a decade ago) he was one of the most impressive drummers I'd ever seen. He plays with exceptional touch and taste, and he was a joy to watch with our university's jazz band. Super cool dude and a hell of a drummer

Lots of questions taken.. a wmtsg of I am the walrus with protools on a screen. Plus tim pierce came out withRhett Shull and had a panel discussion and fielded questions. About 2 1/2 hours total place was long sold out before showtime.

Stumbled across this channel a few times as an amateur drummer. Enjoy the content. It seemed you didn’t know a lot of these songs. Ricks appeal to many of his fans who are music enthusiasts, who may or may not play instruments, is he can go deep in most genres - where actual instruments are played - over a 40 year span, and make you pay attention to how the artists creates. His “what makes this song great” series is amazing.

Regarding Rush's "YYZ" at #7 (11:10): The pluperfect example of Rush's genius and sense of humor. Not only did they pay tongue-in-cheek homage to their home town by naming an instrumental after Toronto Pearson International Airport but figured out a way to incorporate its Morse code IATA ident (_ . _ _ [Y] _ . _ _ [Y] _ _ . . [Z]) into that opening riff. And, Rush being Rush, of course it had to be in 10/8 and played over the bar line. I think if Rick knew the story behind the song, he would've rated it higher, if only for sheer creativity.

I think that specialy since you've been to jazz school we can not miss "Dave Brubeck - Take five" the most famous odd time jazz song ever, starting with the legendary jazzbeat in 5/4 by the great drummer and later on drumteacher mainly due to eyeproblems but still kept playing great and technical things on his kit mr.Joe Morello. And like others mention "Judas priest - Painkiller" a awesome fill and than the starting beat that song you recognise instantly thanks to drummer Scott Travis. And also one of the big names in oldschool heavy metal "Manowar - Warriors of the world" Scott Columbus plays a very standard beat, base on 1 snare on 2 followed by galloping bassguitar. There are alot of great songs you can find but these i was like 'hey...'

Was a staple song here in the States on AOR FM Radio. - Rest in Peace Cozy Powell, Neil Peart and Sean Reinert.

"Superstition"'s opening drum part was written by Jeff Beck. Stevie said to keep it up and sat down to write. A better drummer then sat in and Jeff went back to the guitar. He was just goofing off.

The Police's 'Zenyatta Mondatta' album was one that I had started to teach myself the drums to, after it was released in 1980 and when I was 10, and Copeland remained one of my drum heroes ever since 😀 And I can't believe it was only a year or two ago when I heard for the very first time that he's actually a lefty! 🤯 I would've chosen the 'Spirits In The Material World' intro instead 🙂 Alex Van Halen has been another favourite for just as long 🙂 U2's Larry Mullen had taught me you don't need to play flashy in order to still come up with cool, unique rhythms. And Peart wasn't too shabby either 😉 His intro to 'Digital Man' from the 'Signals' album would've been in *my* list, and also Dave Grohl's 'My Hero' intro 😊

I think he gets a great sound because he's a producer and has had experience at mic'ing. Spin Doctors didn't have as much influence over here. I liked their tune Refrigerator car?...and you are right about combining the Purdy shuffle with the bo diddly beat, it is hard for most of us mere mortal drummers...but Poccaro makes it feel great and look easy

If you haven't listened already, I would highly recommend the Oysterhead record (grand pecking order). It really shows some of Stewart Copeland best drumming and you can't go wrong with Les Claypool. Army's on Ectasy is my favourite song from that album.

I still don't understand how Queen isn't on anyone's radar. "We will rock you" might be supported by other percussion instruments (hands and feet) but that is a drum intro and I think it would have to be the most instantly recognisable intro to people both in and outside the music world. Obviously not the most challenging one, but there's no reason to penalise the genius of simplicity.

You should check out Produce Like a Pro channel. He did a review of Tom Sawyer, and delivered my favorite descriptions of the channels I follow, "They don't put their head up their own butt." But do your Top 20 fills, Intro, Otros, groves, etc. Then, by genre. Hope you and Rick can connect.

I think Phil Collins is rather underrated. Whether in Genesis, Brand X, Solo or session work w Robert Plant, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel and certainty w/ Abba's 'Frida' Lyngstad on I Know There's Something Going On, it's a unique jazz-ish rock style with those great tom fills. You should give him a listen or three.
