Drumbone with BMGF - Take 1

Back in April, I took a trip up to the Netherlands and visited my "Blue Man Group Fans" friends (Marco, Hans & Bas). Along with getting to play their epic PVC Instrument, I played their Drumbone! As you can see in this video, they built quite an impressive of replica of BMG's Drumbone, so I was very excited to play it.
This was my first time ever touching a Drumbone (not to mention, the first video take of me playing it) along with Marco and Bas, so I hope you enjoy our performance :-) We certainly had fun!

I can tell that plumbers are going to have a major shortage soon! Uhm has anyone seen where all my PVC piping went? Some blue guy walked off with it.

Maxim Van Loocke he auditioned for them but he didn't make it. Not because he wasn't good enough, but it just wouldn't work out. He has a video explaining it

they're definitely great, no doubt about it. but the percussion part isn't really all that hard. it's straight sixteenths with accents in a pretty sweet pattern. coming from a drummer, it's incredibly easy to learn, but sounds super badass. you could easily adapt the main rhythm to quints and have a whole drum line playing it in an hour or two. which, might I add, I would kill to see.

Because his eyes are small, and his mannerisms and facial expressions are too goofy. He's very talented, it's just not the personality of Blue Man.

Awesome, dude. You clearly had lots of fun with this. It occurs to me that something could be rigged up so the length is controlled by a foot pedal (or two), allowing it to be played by one person. Of course that couldn't work for the bit where the two halves are combined, but it could make for an interesting instrument.

What did you guys do to the part of the pipe that getting hit? It's like you're adding some padding on it. I tried using a rolled posterboard but it still doesn't sound right, especially when I hit the second pipe by it's mouth. And also what is the size of your pipes? I found some guide that told me to use 3" and 4" pipes but the difference was to big to make a decent notes. I also tried using 3" and 2,5". It was much better but still, compared to your's mine still have a quite wide gap, and that also messed up the notes

The only thing which keeps this from being a "practical" instrument is that it takes three people to play it. If you had it in a cabinet, with foot pedals and maybe electric motors to do the sliding, one person could play it. I believe that many bands would then start using it, because it has a great sound and is so versatile. BMG should license that. It would make them some additional money (though I doubt they're hurting for that stuff) and it would add an interesting element to popular music. I wrote a story set in the 22nd Century and I have the protagonist mention in passing that it seems every song has a drumbone solo these days.

I believe they were just a standard pair of wooden drumsticks that they spray painted orange and added grip tape to.

They are not even real drumsticks. They are 18mm wooden rods and indeed painted orange and added griptape to.
