Around this time she was Tom Waits' girlfriend, and they would tour together. Her career also got a boost when Lowell George of Little Feat used one of her songs on his solo album. Her slow numbers, like "Last Chance Texaco", are a whole other side of her.
"company" is one her best. a gorgeous gorgeous song. and nobody really has reacted to it. Rickie Lee Jones needs to be reacted to much more. she is major major! thanks for posting.
@@L33ReactsMost of us here have been in love with RLJ for decades! While I have always ADORED Joni's music, RLJ will forever be my female singer-songwriter-musician hero! Brilliant story teller. Yes, the first album is wonderful, but she only got better in her subsequent work! My favorite albums are Pirates, Flying Cowboys, and Traffic from Paradise. And I have to admit there's much I never got to listen to after TFP. She also does great covers. As with most singer-songwriters it's best to start from the beginning and work your way forward. She assembled the best groups of musicians in the studio and live. Saw her live several times in the 80s & 90s in Philly. I feel she never got the recognition she deserved. So glad she is still doin' her thing!
This whole album is real solid Drummer Steve Gadd came in the studio and was asked if he would play on a track. sat down and played the song. “Chuck E in love “
She is truly unique, one of kind oozing with talent.Check out any number of her hits like We belong together,Chuck Es in love.Always top of the line musicians.
Rickie is still going strong. Loved her from day one. My deaf old guy’s breakfast club was eating monster fry-ups this morning and the girls in our breakfast bar ( Green Grocers, Norwich, UK) were playing her Pirates album (the one after this) and we got to singing along like it was the seventies again.
So glad you got to Rickie Lee! Growing up I always thought RL was the COOLEST. The epitome of Urban Cool. The kind of girl that would have scared me a little
Ricki Lee was bringing Jazz, Hip, and fun hip to the next level. Great tune. Thanks for playing some Rickie Lee Jones. "Last Chance Texico" is on this album too. Another great song, along with "Chuck E's In Love". Give them a listen - you won't be disappointed. The king of this kind of music if Tom Waits (her ex-boyfriend) songs like "Tom Traubert’s Blues" "Step Right Up", "Burma Shave". "Small Change", "Pasties and a G-String". Tom Waits will change your entire view on what music is and was.
Just saw Rickie Lee Jones about 4 years ago, she's still writing new material, and performing in her 70's. She put on a fantastic show!! Speaking of Dr. John, she did a vocal duet with him, "Making Whoopee" that's excellent. Other gems from RLJ: Chuck E's in Love Last Chance Texaco Horses Dat Dere Up From the Skies ( Hendrix cover)
Good one, Snoopy! I first heard this as a group performed it at my college, way before I ever heard it on the radio. I had to know where it came from and went out and bought the album as soon as I found out. My brother in law hung out with her at a party at her home in New Orleans several years ago. I’m not sure how much of the rest of her music has this same vibe, but she is good.
Rickie Lee Jones is a FORCE. I had the same reaction when this first dropped, then was stunned that nothing else she did was remotely like it, or like anything else she did, for that matter. She has never been in the limelight like most of the folks heard here, but that doesn't mean she's not every bit as good, or better.
Hey Bud! This album came out in 1980 at the hight of disco! My brother and I fell in love with her and she never disappoints! Don't feel bad if you get hooked on her!
Recall, so clearly seeing her on Saturday Night Live and going who is THAT!?! Went right out and bought her record. Listened to it. 100 times. One of my all time favs.
Fifteen studio albums and two Grammys from eight nominations. Miss Coolsville has weaved Folk, Jazz, and R&B into a sound/style all her own. I have always been partial to her first self-entitled record in 1979 (Massive hit Chuck Es In Love) as well as her Traffic From Paradise record in 1993. Just a few of her must-listen songs: Jolie, Jolie, Running From Mercy, It Must Be Love, Cuck E’s In Love, Danny’s All Star Joint.
This is her debut album, and one of the very best - one of my all time faves, yep, and all-star back up band... you forgot Randy Newman. She became known as The Duchess of Coolsville. Really gotta hear WEASLE AND THE WHITE BOYS COOL, CHUCK E.'s IN LOVE, YOUNG BLOOD, LAST CHANCE TEXACO, NIGHT TRAIN, COOLSVILLE ... This came out way back when it was fashionable to live on the streets (or at least roam the streets at night), with the street jive, hustlin' for quarters, and before AIDS and all that.
She always had the best musicians playing with her. I think she was well-known in LA, but until her first album came she was unknown elsewhere. The week before this album came out the lead singer in a band I was playing with happened to be in New York. The night before she was coming home she walked by a place that had a line up and a sign advertising Rickie Lee Jones. She considered going to see her, but changed her mind because neither she nor the people she was with had heard of her. As soon as we heard the album she was kicking herself.
Every track is worth a hear. What a debut album, became instant fan in 79'. Hated WB was such tools with her and made her get free. She has done some great covers lately....helped me keep my sense of humor during that horrible lockdown (never again).
I fell in love with Rickie Lee as soon as I first heard Danny's All Star Joint on the radio, back in '79.😍 About a week later, they started playing Chuck E.'s in Love, and got me going again. I bought a copy of the album and pretty much wallowed in it for several months.😄 She's really got a nice groove going in all of her stuff.😉
Another classic First Album in History! Sounding so Good! In every ways… Musicalité… talented… some airy recording! Hi-fi listenable to the highest level!
On Rickie's second album ("Pirates"), she has another song that is in a similar vein as this one, which I highly recommend. It's called "Woody and Dutch on the Slow Train to Peking." I can never decide which one I like better, but I freakin' love both! Don't sleep on that one.
Yay! I got to see her live in a small, intimate club in Boston back in the day and she was killin’ it. Very special performer. Pretty sure I fell in love too. This album, every damn track. For contrast to what you just heard, try Company.
My ex mother in law turned me on to this album in 1980s Florida. Loved her style (still do), love her lyrics (Texaco is a must). Great reaction, Thanks again.
Geez, people are talking about all kinds of things that I heard growing up but they don't hold a candle to some others; "Last Chance Texaco", live or studio, "Living it Up", live or studio, "Night Train", "Must Be Love", "We Belong Together", "Living it Up", "Gravity", "Magazine", "Must Be Love", and those are just the first three albums. You listen to these and it will alter you inherently, altogether and forever.
A later album, which is less jazzy but more reflective, is "The Magazine". I love it, though it won't necessarily make for great reactions. You might listen for your own enjoyment.
This whole album is fantastic. Quite a few slow tracks, all great. Great lyrics and great musicians throughout. Check out "Chuck E.'s In Love," "Last Chance Texaco," and " Weasels and the White Boy's Cool." Love her!
She was the New Artist of the Year in '79 beating out Dire Straits, Blues Brothers among others. I love the line "I'm in a half-way house on a one way street. Try ❤
OMG !!! I LOVE this song!! I always have to listen to it twice ~ it's too short! I'd consider this "swing" music. Makes me dance the jitterbug! 💃Check out, Chuck Es in love, too ~
Ricki had a fine career, but only one big hit and this was not it. It was Chuck E's in Love from this album. You are right about the all-star cast here. You know Steve Gadd from his drumming on Aja, which you just reacted to.
This album, and the one after that (Pirates) are essential listens. I hope you will eventually react to "Traces Of The Western Slopes", her masterpiece off Parates.
