Holy shit. Well, all I knew going into this was I would end up happy by the end and also sad it was over. This song helped save my life last year! And I will never, ever forget that first time hearing this song. This rendition by Steve and friends is a great tribute to one of the greatest songs of all time. I loved Steve and John Wetton sharing all those moments on stage together. Thank you to our patron and Discordia Mayor Olias for this fantastic selection...

Steve Hackett is such a master guitarist. I've loved his work since I discovered early Genesis in 1971! Great reaction to one of the best Genesis songs ever. RIP John Wetton.

I’ve seen him live a couple of times and it’s an amazing show! We were just mill town kids from the Adirondacks yet we reveled in the complexity, the poetry, the grace and the trippy atmosphere. This is really a thinking person’s music. It takes a certain sensibility to weep at the magical beauty that these songs weave. I cried deeply listening to The Carpet Crawlers from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway just the other day. My dear friend Jo-An’s spirit right there in the room with me. We were 17 years old in 1974-75 when we first heard this……

I just saw Steve Hackett on April 19 in Mexico City at a local auditorium that seats 3,500. The band was on FIRE! Every musician in the ensemble more than carried their weight AND the audience was treated to Firth of Fifth in the encore as well as Los Endos. I have a feeling this will be my last Steve Hackett concert because the man is 74 and it is NOT easy touring at this age. Thank you for reviewing this stellar performance.

November, 1973 in Cleveland Ohio. I was 20YO. Saw the Selling England tour. To have the privilege of experiencing Genesis with Gabriel was incredible. To see and hear this piece performed live was impossible to put into mere words. Lifelong Genesis/Gabriel fan. The guitar solo is off the charts excellent and Hackett plays effortlessly. This made may day big-time. Thank you, Lee. Peace and love to all here.

Gotta stop missing the premieres but now chicken pox among the clan 🙄 Steve Hackett is such a treasure - did you do his project with Chris Squire, “Squackett”? Yeah, this is a lovely track. As it gives way to the piano after the first vocals - you must listen to the last 2 songs at the end of Selling England. Even more tears ❤ Lee Pomeroy played bass with Anderson Rabin Wakeman. Another one for you 😊 I remember those chaotic early days and this song and Close to the Edge. Look at you now buddy. 😊

Everyone thinks the big difference between 1974 Genesis and 1978 Genesis is the departure of Peter Gabriel. I think this overlooks the importance of Hackett's departure -- IMO, the difference between "Foxtrot" and "Trick of the Tail" is less than the difference between "Trick of the Tail" and "And Then There Were Three". Great reaction, in any case.

And you can turn to music whenever you need it and it lifts you right up! I didn’t have time in my life to pay attention to Wetton in his band UK and also a lot of Asia so I’m still living in the past and it’s great . Camel too. Some great music. Steve is a master and still plays this live better than ever. There are lots of vids on RU-vid with Steve doing this with various iterations of his band. Was great to see John Wetton do the vocals on this, and so sad he passed way too soon I saw him do guest vocals on Afterglow with Steve in Hammersmith he looked so well back than. Genesis of course used excerpts of Firth Of Fifth on their tours but always incorporated it in medleys of old songs, which is fine, but it is Steve who always played in in its entirety. Daryl Stuermer, the brilliant touring guitarist with Genesis from the late 70s onwards always did a great version of the solo on Firth Of Fifth, but seemed to play too many notes which seemed unnecessary. That being said the Genesis version of the song with Daryl, and Chester and Phil both on the drums is so powerful when the crescendo kicks in on the solo. Great reaction again Lee, and if you can do the medley from The Rome 2007 show of In The Cage/Cinema Show/Duke's Travels and Afterglow it is utterly amazing. Glad you enjoy Genesis so much, and that the music means so much to you.

At the intermission I went to get a beer. When I told the 20 something girl who was serving the drinks, "great show," she said, "Yeah, they're killing it." Awesome show. Hope he comes back.

Hi Lee, it's always satisfying to see someone from a younger generation enjoying the music of my youth so much. I'm almost 65 and Genesis has remained one of my favorite bands, I would even say at the top of the list. To know that their music helped you through difficult times says it all!!! I had the chance to see Steve live with Genesis in 1977 in Brussels and I will finally have the chance to see him live again this July 2nd in Brussels, during his new tour in which he will revisit the album "The Lamb..." and also songs from his solo repertoire. I hope you won't miss the opportunity to see them too, I wouldn't be surprised if he plans concerts near you. I also wanted to tell you that I thought you would react to a different live version than this one, because my favorite is the one from "Steve Hackett - Genesis Revisited Band & Orchestra :Live At The Royal Festival Hall" with Nad Sylvan as the singer". If you'll like it, please check out Nad personal solo work, which is very interesting, if you have the opportunity and time, listen to "The Bride say No" or What Have You Done", I'm sure you will be surprised. Have a nice rest of the day, I will continue to see you discover other gems with pleasure

I think this proves the world is full of amazing musicians you've never heard of, and these days often find it hard to get a break. I think I prefer Nad Sylvan as a vocalist for the Genesis material, and his own solo stuff is worth a listen. I think of this less as a guitar solo than as a composition in its own right. I'm not sure if it was Tony or Steve who wrote it.
