YES! Putting these two together was so great, Coquina, a big thanks! Love that early Beatles style, pared down and pure. Then the M's & P's give it a dancehall feel with the piano and close harmonies. Winners both. You got me with peter Pan, Lee. Blessings all.
I absolutely do (I was in the 4th grade when they first appeared on Ed Sullivan Show) - and I recently ordered the dvd collection of all three seasons, just for esses and gees! The animation was ...not so hot, but the music is golden!
Lee, you should check out both Beatles movies, "A Hard Day's Night ", and "Help", since you enjoy footage of them so much. Granted, these are fictionalized versions of themselves, and their lives during "Beatlemania", but it does show their funny, quirky, humorous personalities, and a glimpse of how nuts it was for them, and how they relied on each other, and realized the crazy absurdity of their lives. I think it also shows how fun things were for them in the beginning!
I Call Your Name was on Capital Records second Beatles album release, called, you guessed it, The Beatles Second Album, released in April 1964, although recorded earlier. I was 5 years old then and my 15 year old brother had the album. This was when I became a Beatles fan.
Cass Elliot had such a beautiful pure voice. I also love hearing John Lennon on the same song. His voice was perfect with the growl at the end of the line. Pure tones all round.
I'm a hardcore Mama Cass fan and she blows it out of the universe in this song... You can hear the urgency & want in her tone ...she has a longing "I'm desperate without you " feel that I just adore .Her voice is undeniably the best! Smooth as butter and strong as steel. You're the best Mama Cass R.I.P ❤ Twelve Thirty is a real good M&P song
Cass Elli9t was said to have a huge crush on John Lennon. This led to their recording and you can tell she c or her heart into it. That isn't to say she didn't do so in other songs. That's just one of the stories, at the time, for their recording.
The lads were styling themselves as 1950’s rock and rollers. Brian brought them into the present. The suits gave them the appearance of a strong unified front, an authority. They offset the suits with the Chelsea boots with the “Cuban” heels, the electric guitars, and the “long” hair. And with their talent and charisma…POW! The world shifts on its axis. “I Saw Her Again Last Night,” by the Mamas and the Papas is a gem!
Mamas and the Papas adding a saloon aesthetics. That is a good take. I was thinking more maybe like ragtime aesthetics. It is compatible to a 2020s song rewritten with a grunge, a buzz or a 1990s alternative aesthetics.
I love both versions, love what the Mamas did with the song, they also do a great cover of a Rogers and Hart song from 1927, The day my heart stood still. Isn't Lennon's vocal incredible.
Yeah, Mama Cass had a huge huge crush on John Lennon. So yeah, that whispering of “John” during the Mamas and Papas version was her signifying said crush on him.
The Beatles have always been my fave band, but with this tune, the Mamas and Papas are the bomb ! The version from Monterrey with Monday, Monday is absolutely great.
Check out the Black Angels song, "Telephone". It gets away with a modified version of this riff. I love the Black Angels. They are mostly psychedelic hard rock.
Check out "Baby It's You" Originally Sung by The Shirelles released in 1961, Covered by The Beatles released in 1963, and covered by the group called Smith in 1969. You'll love it. The Wrecking Crew were the "Hired Guns" if you wanted a Hit Record.
Ringo never got the recognition he deserved back in the day…unless you were a drummer. Drummers understood his greatness. Taking the way back machine here. We had I call your name on the early LP. John’s voice is amazing on this ditty. I played this song to death. The Mama’s and the Pappa’s made it great and made it their own. Not greater but still great. Love your facial reaction to Mama Cass’s slow down jazzy smoky vocals. The girl could sing anything. You made me LOL at one point. I have to listen again because I forget what you said. Pure entertainment from your channel. If I could only hear one it would be you. Awesome.
So good. Thanks bro. People don't realize what a great R n R band the Beatles were. The just know the softer songs. And Mama Cass had such a distinctive voice. Awesome. Hey man, I recommend this song, 'I Dig Rock and Roll Music' by Peter, Paul and Mary. In the song they sing about the Beatles, Donovan and the Mamas and Papas. Fun song.
The rock and roll hall of fame should make a special section or award for a group,or groups, like the wrecking crew. How can all the songs that they have done, that are a part of the portfolios of current members of the rock and roll hall of fame, yet not be inducted themselves? You know that their music catapulted multiple groups into the hall.
I thought of this as album filler for a long time. It's the Beatles, so good album filler. It wasn't until many years later, after Lennon was shot, that Ringo did the song for a Lennon tribute special. I really liked it, and it made me appreciate the song a lot more.
As usual, I loved this song. Interestingly, it was one of the many songs that Lennon-McCartney gave to others to record - this one to Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, who put it on the B side to their hit "Bad To Me" - also a Lennon-McCartney song. Billy J. recorded it much like it was written and much like The Beatles later recorded it. Of course, The Beatles version has much more punch to it. The Mamas and the Papas were one of the great vocal quartets of the time, and I loved how they made the song their own while not destroying it. Personally, I lean to the Fab 4 version. @L33Reacts, you should also do a double reaction to The Beatles "Ticket To Ride" followed by The Carpenters cover (please use the studio versions) - I don't think you'll be disappointed. As always, thank you for shining a light on this great music. (Even tho I am a Patreon subscriber, I still like to "Like" and comment on the RU-vid channel just to feed the stats!) And CONGRATS on the 4 years!!!
I appreciate the kind words my friend. It’s been a long 4 years I will say that much. But worth it. Totally worth it. I appreciate your support on patreon and on here. It means a lot
To me, the Mamas and Papas first three albums had some huge hits and some weaker moments. "Look Through My Window" is a must. Their 4th album is (to me) an experience worthy of a full album dive, but "Twelve Thirty" and "For the Love of Ivy" are my top picks and you will love them. They broke up after this album, determined to end while still at their peak. There is an early 1970s contractual obligation album that has some well produced and catchy songs, but it is essentially a John Phillips solo project with added vocal harmonies from the three [former] Mamas and Papas members, who didn't even record in the studio at the same time as each other. Not a bad listen but does not pack the punch that you hear in their 4 albums as a real group.
Mama's and Papa's must listen to's are "California Dreamin" (which you already covered) and "Creeque Alley". I also like "I Saw Her Again". (Your reaction to California Dreamin' seemed "luke warm". Most others hearing it for the first time are blown away and consider it S-tier. "Why have I not heard this before!" is what they mostly all say. Maybe try it again with Creeque Alley? ) Just my 2 cents.
"Creeque Alley" is just about the only M&P song I like. It's almost a '60s rap song. Rapping about band members and members of other bands, drugs and fame.
If you want to hear a stunning reworking of a Beatles song, you should compare Ringo's "With a Little Help From My Friends" from Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band with Joe Cocker's version. Both are great versions but Joe Cocker's is gritty and intense whereas Ringo's is cheerful. SO different emotionally. PS check out some Janis Joplin. You won't regret it.
Mamas and Papas absolutely crushed this song. Both are great, but M&P edged it out, in my opinion. Check out Go Where You Wanna Go by M&P. Another great cover.
I HAVE THE CARTOONS ON DVD WITH EXCELLENT CARTOON COVERS..... ON "I CALL YOUR NAME" THE GUITAR PART SLOWING DOWN SEEMS LIKE A FUCK UP......GEORGE'S SO CALLED LEAD STINKS !
I love the Beatles but the way the Mamas and the Papas broke it down and slowed it down with their incredible vocal harmonies just takes it to another level, that’s my opinion and I’m sticking with it,not sorry.
