It was great hanging out with him for a while at Ground Up Fest last February. We had a quick beer after his drum clinic with other SP drummers Jason Thomas and Jamison Ross. We chatted not about music but about traveling and our kids. Really nice guy and super approachable.
This was the song that clued me in to just how awesome of a drummer he truly is. What about me? He had some really great drum stuff in it but I would say this piece is actually the more complicated of the two. The constant switching between 6/8 and 5/8. And then some of those Phils that he did towards the end really makes that song magical.
Have you ever heard of JD Beck? I would highly recommend checking out his Zildjian Live performance if you haven't seen it yet. I think he was only 17 at the time of that recording and his drumming in it is absolutely unreal. He's got a really interesting playing style and it would be nice to hear your comments on it! It is also a jazz-type thing, somewhat similar to Snarky Puppy. I cannot recommend it enough.
The Snarky Puppy 'collective' is also prolific and progenetive. It spawned Ghost Note, which is a tour-de-force in its own right - or at least shares genes with it. (see all Zildjian Live videos) There are all sorts of solo and collaborative projects involving SP current members and alums. Imagine being part of that organism?
Let's try and correct this story. Larnell Lewis did *NOT* _"... learn the whole set on a plane ride."_ *_Listen_* to Larnell explain what actually happened in the first 30 seconds of _"Larnell Lewis Hears A Song Once And Plays It Perfectly"._ Larnell says he had "learned" two of songs before boarding the 'plane. Watch that whole video and you will understand what Larnell means by "learn a song". There were no drum parts for "We Like it Here" for him to copy. Larnell *composed* the drum part for each song. He *composed* 6 drum parts for 6 songs on the transatlantic flight. Further, on Snarky Puppy's site, they say "We Like it Here" was recorded over 4 nights. IIRC a Snark Puppy documentary/interview explains Snarky Puppy rehearsed a couple of songs during each day, then recorded those songs in four evenings in front of an audience. The best takes were released as an album, the DVD has alternative solos too. So there were multiple takes. I am not suggesting Larnell's performance was anything less then brilliant. However, don't discount the fact that the rest Snarky Puppy had never heard the drum parts (at _least_ for the 6 songs he composed on the flight) until Larnell arrived and played them. They had to rehearse the songs as a complete band before they could record them. Best Wishes. ☮
@@Shikamoru Thank you for replying. I'm the wrong person to appeal to about myths. I have issues with _"let's just let the myth live."_ The story is not presented as a myth, it's presented as factually accurate 'truth'. I fundamentally object to pretending known falsehoods are true. The only time it's justifiable is in times of war, for example misleading the Axis powers on when and where the D-Day landings would happen. Continuing to propagate the misleading story about Larnell Lewis has no justification. Further, at least one version of the myth *_under estimates_* what Larnell Lewis achieved. You wrote _"It's a fun one..."_ in what way? You continued _"... and doesn't hurt anyone."_ That is not a criteria for repeating known falsehoods. Further, I can suggest possible harms it might do. For example drummers inspired by Larnell Lewis, then discover part of his inspiration was not true, and so questioning everything he did, and their motivation. Simpler, a drummer, inspired by Larnell meets him. The drummer starts asking how Larnell was able to achieve the "myth" (your word). Larnell feels he needs to deny the "myth". Both have a potentially delightful, possibly productive, rewarding, first encounter spoiled. A complementary question is: who benefits from continuing to propagate the false "myth"? AFAICT, Larnell Lewis does't benefit. Drummers or aspiring drummers don't benefit. Please answer. Further, there are several different "myths" containing different falsehoods or misleading half truths. In your view, how would you choose the "better" "myth"? What about some versions of the "myth" which conflict? Do we keep them all, conflicts included? What is the benefit of continuing with the "myth"? One enormous advantage of the facts is conflicts can be resolved. When stories are based on falsehoods, resolving conflicts is much harder, and is typically very unsatisfactory at best, and may damage relationships needlessly. By the age of majority (and eg. voting, consent, driving), or military service (which ever is younger), I am against all myths and actively for factual accuracy and evidence. The facts about Larnell Lewis's achievement aren't as simple as the myth, hence are exactly like real life. Simplifying and falsifying parts of a story to make it "fun" is fictionalising real life. It encourages "lazy thinking", "unquestioning acceptance" and creates fertile mindsets for charlatans, and criminals to exploit. Real stories about real life helps people learn to deal with the messiness of human reality. I believe myths in adult life *do* harm. Obviously myths are fundamentally lies, and hence enable liars. Myths enable people to believe real life is simpler than reality. Scepticism needs to be encouraged; "if something sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't true". Myths rely on gullibility. That is exactly *NOT* what we need to encourage and develop in people who can: vote, raise children, go to war and kill, etc. You should be able to work this all out for yourself. However, I'll give you some more clues. Should we encourage people to believe all politicians claims just because their claims seem _"fun"_ or they claim their "myth" (aka falsehoods, misleading half-truths, or lies) _"doesn't hurt anyone"?_ Another. Was it wrong to refuse to believe and propagate the tobacco industries denial of harm from smoking? People enjoyed smoking *a lot.* For smokers, it was pleasurable, and stopping was very difficult and awful. So genuinely more "fun" to continue with the tobacco industries "myth". I might not be able to change your view. However, passing readers might be able to "triage" views on the benefits of myths, appropriately. Best Wishes. ☮
Larnell did not compose the drum part of this album Robert Sput Searight was the original drummer for this project and larnell replace Sput which he composed the drum parts already which Larnell had to learn
