When the line: “when I start dancing inside you” she abruptly got up and said “can we please play something less mushy?” “How about some Ramones or Bauhaus or Thrill Kill Cult.” Jefferson Starship had the strangest bassist & keyboard relationship. Both musicians would swap on like every other song.

Starship was a successful commercial move by them toward the popular mainstream but a huge artistic step down from Jefferson Airplane IMO. @L33Reacts Agree. The thing with Jefferson Starship (and later Starship - they changed their name a third time by dropping "Jefferson") is that they produced some good to great music, but they also put out a bunch of garbage. Generally speaking, the later stuff is worse, although there are some exceptions. Jefferson Airplane (mainly) made great albums. Jefferson Starship not so much. Many (most?) of their albums have a bunch of forgettable filler tracks.

There were about a dozen people seated around the table when someone pulled out a half gram of coke. The mirror was passed to Grace Slick who immediately hoovered up the entire amount. Looking up and seeing the astonishment on their faces she said " Hey - better that one person get high than nobody!"

Don't react to "We Built This City," because you might like it, like most people did when it was first released, before you begin to loath it, like most people came to do after hearing it on the radio for the hundredth time. On these two songs, however, Craig Chaquico is a beautiful guitar player, who went on to have a solo career, making guitar driven, instrumental, World Music that I really got into in the late '90s and early '00s. His music is all instrumental, so it probably wouldn't work well on a reaction channel, like yours L33, but you might really enjoy listening to him while working around the house, as background music. 😀👍

Obviously Starship consisted of a few J Airplane members and additions while a few others dropped out. Several of Marty's songs were radio friendly whereas Paul Kantner's were more edgy, many focused on space related themes and others graced politics. My top 3 favorite Airplane songs are "Have You Seen The Saucers", "Crown of Creation" and "Mexico". My favorite Starship songs are "Ride the Tiger", "Alien" and "Caroline". Red Octopus is a really good album, evey song - the Starship was a 180 from the hard blues Airplane sound driven by Jorma & Casady - and sure after Red Octopus alot of Airplane fans did not like the more pop Starship sound - and they had Hot Tuna with Jorma & Casady to fall back on.

There's early Jefferson Starship and later Jefferson Starship. I prefer the earlier version.

@@L33Reacts When Marty Balin left the group Mickey Thomas (lead singer on Elvin Bishops "Fooled Around And Fell In Love") joined the group and their sound became more pop/arena rock and eventually dropped the "Jefferson" part of their name and became just "Starship". Still some good stuff (some cheezy stuff too! LOL) but I prefer the earlier two versions. Most bands change eventually. Usually due to personnel changes. Mickey Thomas, like Marty Balin, also has a tremendous voice. Red Octopus has some very different styles of music on it. The type of album you would listen to the whole thing in one sitting.

Also, this is music from Bay Area in the 1970s. So it's not everyone's cup of tea.

The first 4 Jefferson Starship album covers were inspired by Paul Kantner's interest in Chinese culture. Each of the album titles refers to an Element: Red Octopus (Water), Spitfire (Fire), Dragon Fly (Air), and Earth. I am not a fan of ballads and when "Miracles" came out, I hated it because it was played all the time! Jefferson Starship had some good songs (I rate overall a 7), but Starship was a big fat zero because Mickey Thomas made it a vanity project, especially after going to court with Paul Kantner. The only Jefferson Starship album I like is "Blows Against the Empire". This was a Paul Kantner project. The second side of the album is Paul's mini space opera which was nominated for an award. Grace Slick did two albums in collaboration with Paul which are great and four solo albums (they vary in genre).

Good songs though their best and u serrated tune is St. Charles with the best vocals and excellent instrumentals!Lee there is a part of this song that they could not put on the radio.i believe the critical comments are most likely when they changed some members again and then called themselves Starship not Jefferson Starship and without Marty!

Anything with Balin and Slick is a winner! the rest was crap! my opinion! I'm in the original members of Airplane club!

When you read your phone during the song, you are not listening to the lyrics. You miss so much on every reaction.

It's called knowing who is playing what. I'm looking at a list of the people playing. And its impossible to focus on EVERYTHING on your first listen. I get it just fine.
