THE BEST VIDEO OF THE MORNING FOR SURE. In the 60s, the British invasion left him behind and ironically, it was the British and British inspired rockers who brought him back in America. He had been going strong in Europe for years.

This from his Black & White Night show, done in a small-ish nightclub style venue @ Cocoanut Grove. PBS does this every so often as a fund-raiser. Amazing show!. Roy went through some tragedies in his life. He & his 1st wife Claudette were returning home on their motorbikes in June of 1966 when Claudette struck the door of a pickup truck and was instantly killed. She was 25. In September of 1968, Orbison was in England when he received word that a fire had broken out at his home in Tennessee and both his sons had passed away. They were 6 & 11.

He was forgotten somewhat because music changed and he fell by the wayside. But the guys that put him back on the front burner were guys that grew up melting when they heard the big O yanking at their souls. Jeff Lynn was the catalyst , and weirdly all those Willbury’s plus Roy, loved Del Shannon! To a surprising number of these cool heroes, Del Shannon ( “A run run run run runaway!”) was the real deal. Good job buddy

George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynn had a hand in resurrecting Orbison's career by asking him to join them as a member of the Traveling Wilburys group, which resulted in his being recognized as a rock and roll legend, got a new recording contract. It also resulted in him being inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 1987. One year later, Orbison died of a heart attack at the age of 52. Weeks later his hit You Got It in the USA, it entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart on January 21, 1989, reached #9 on April 15, 1989, spending 18 weeks in the chart. What a way to go out!!!

"Orbison and Harrison first met in the early 1960s when the former toured with The Beatles. He was a massive fan of Orbison, as were the other members of The Traveling Wilburys.. according to Orbison’s son, Roy Jr, Harrison and the rest of the Wilburys wanted the musician to join their band so much that the former Beatle “got down on one knee and asked my dad if he wanted to be in his band.”

Roy Orbison not only has a great voice but also seems to use it effortlessly, even in the falsetto register, hardly even opening his mouth much most of the time. The Taking Care of Business band, on this occasion and excluding all the guests, was James Burton on guitar, Glen D. Hardin on piano, Jerry Scheff on double bass and Ron Tutt on drums. They were part of Elvis Presley's backing band in the final years of his life and also most of Emmylou Harris' Hot Band.

What's really interesting is that *The Girl From Ipanema* was released in July 1964 and then Roy Orbison's *Pretty Woman* was released in September 1964, two months later. Both of them had the nearly identical theme of a beautiful girl passing by who ignores the observer, but then later takes notice. They were very different musically, but while offering very different musical moods, they were both were melodic & catchy. Just seems really odd that both surfaced at about the same time...

No Roy by the mid 1970’s could no longer get a recording contract. Then slowly he was ‘rediscovered’. He was tagge for a movie track “ Loving you Feeling Again” which he wrote a performed with Emmylou Harris. Earning a Grammy in 1981. I saw him the next year in Springfield, MA. He still did not have a contract. He decided to jump start his career by going out on tour to see if he still had a following. He said he always had had a strong following in New England especially southern New England. He he came out on stage to a standing ovation and started crying he said we did not know if anyone would one would come to hear us … but you did and we are going to play until you tell us to stop… He played close to 3 hours. He did “Crying” 3 times each time going higher. Orbison songs were huge for movies in the late seventies and early eighties. Then in the late eighties, Jeff Lynne had gone on to be an in demand producer and had produced George Harrison’s comeback album Cloud 9 and they needed a new song for a B side to the 3rd single and George called Jeff who said he was going to go see Roy Orbison in concert that night and that Jeff was going to produce Roy’s comeback album. George wanted to go see Roy, he hadn’t seen him much since the 1963 tour of England. It was the tour of England with Roy that the Beatles switched and became the headliners.

During the height of Beatlemania in Sept 1964, Pretty Woman climbed the charts and became a #1 hit. Orbison a managed to sound like the Beatles in style with this song, especially with the guitar riff. Listen to the Beatles album song "Hold Me Tight:" or "I Call Your Name. "They have similar guitar riffs. Secret: Roy Orbison was a headliner on a tour of Britain in 1963. The Beatles were one of his opening acts and idolized him for many years. Roy must have gotten a few ideas from being around them. Amazing, it was his last billboard hot 100 hit until 1987 with You Got It.

Lee, J. D. Souther is the 2nd from the right guitar payer on that stage with Roy. As someone else here mentioned, J.D. passed away yesterday at aged 78. He was a co-writer on many songs such as, "Best Of My Love" and "New Kid In Town" for the Eagles. "The Sad Cafe" for Don Henley. “Faithless Love” and “White Rhythm and Blues" for Linda Ronstadt just to name a few. Maybe you could play J.D. Souther's own Orbison-flavored 1979 solo hit single, "You're Only Only" as a tribute to him.
