Thank you to our alpha patron Joel for another awesome track. Eric has been getting a ton of play as of late and I am fine with it. He is so good. The lyrics, the delivery, and the subtext are just fantastic here. As a military brat, I will always have the upmost respect for the servicemen and women out there. Thank you for your service. I am so sorry for how our country chooses to treat y'all. This song reminded me of so many things...

The term "Sky Pilot" has nothing to do with Airplanes. Back in the 19th Century "Sky Pilot" was slang for Civilian Preachers and Military Chaplains, long before airplanes existed. A "Maritime Pilot" was an expert who boarded a ship, helping it navigate through dangerous harbors, avoiding hidden rocks, reefs, currents. Preachers were compared to "Pilots", since they helped people navigate the "Sky", avoiding hazards on their way to heaven. In the 20th Century an airplane's "driver" started being called a "Pilot", to suggest expertise with airplanes. But the 20th Century "Airplane Pilot" is unrelated to "Sky Pilot".

Thank you! Great historical references that I (like most people) weren't aware of. I always wondered why they mention war planes at the start of the song, but end up talking about soldiers at the end and not pilots. This sort of historical reference reminds me of 'Mark Twain' (aka: Samuel Clemmons) who used it as a pen name, but it was actually a unit of measurement used on the Riverboats to check the depth of shallow river bottoms...
@jraben1065
@jraben1065 4 месяца назад
@@clayanthony7989 Hi Clay, thanks for such a positive response! I did read about the origin of Mark Twain's name, but then I totally forgot. So thanks for reminding me. For those who don't know, on 19th Century Riverboats they would measure the river bottom's depth with a rod or line marked with numbers. Calling out "Mark Twain" meant "the Marker registered a depth of Two". While Clemmons was working on Riverboats, his imagination was sparked each time someone yelled out this call, and he'd imagine they were calling a person's name.

I've known a lot of Vietnam vets and those who talk about it have never said they were spat upon and screamed at when they came home, and they almost to a man don't believe there was much "spitting on" or other physical abuse of returning vets, despite sensationalized reporting. Those who feel the war was necessary definitely got pushback for a few years and some definitely felt hostility from anti-war citizens. It was a brutal, ugly, unnecessary war that changed this country. We're on the verge of drastic change again today (but there are very few good songs about it). Sadly, young people don't seem to recognize the threat to their familiar ways of life, either because of dangerous apathy or a nihilistic desire - borne of fear and anger - for massive disruption of our systems and traditions, because this economy is criminally unfair to most of us. Servicepeople, thank you all!
@glenndespres5317

It just took one incident of one soldier being spat upon for the media to run with it and for it to burn into the collective psyche of America. The horror of the Mai Lai Massacre really put our soldiers in a bad light. Women, children and babies were slaughtered.

Sorry... In 1968 I was a 14 yr old protester fighting out in the streets against America's war on Vietnam. Got beat up by cops, saw a friend get shot, but knew that war was evil. I have sympathy for those forced thru the draft to go into the military, but -- as we learned during WW2 -- you can't commit genocides even if under orders. Our troops killed at least 2 million SoutheastAsians during that f-ing war, and anyone who fought there contributed to that genocide. That's what this song conveys imo.

They really didn't have much of a choice. Either dodge the draft, face a court marshals wrath for disobeying your CO, or Just not kill anyone while your over there. War unleashes the worst of all sides. And yes those folks that instructed that genocide deserve to face justice but never will. But the everyday man who was drafted and sent there to die against his will only to return to have the country he just served spit on them. And continue to do so. Damned if you do damned if you dont.

Urban legend (polite phrase for total bs),@@L33Reacts, and a way of justifying evil-doing, imo. Quote: "There is a persistent myth or misconception that many Vietnam veterans were spat on and vilified by antiwar protesters during the late 1960s and early 1970s. @clayanthony7989
@clayanthony7989 4 месяца назад
Of course The Beatles did this on 'Pepper' and 'Magical Mystery Tour' in 1967, good historical fact though! Most people are only aware of the extreme phasing on 'Listen To The Music' by the Doobie Bros, which is why the Beatles get overlooked; they were much more subtle with their effects and it never out-shined the music. There was one other major phase shifted song that I'm aware of, 'Strange Brew' by Cream which I heard only once on the radio, but I couldn't find it on any album. Perhaps it was a 45 single version? Maybe someone in the audience can tell me...

As Lincoln once said the only real threats to our traditions and institutions of freedom come from within. With the exception of the 18th/early 19th century British Empire and WWII, no outside foe has ever threatened our freedom. Our various governments, national and local, have at times protected and threatened freedom, as too often have various groups people. The hardest thing to grasp is that a threat to your freedom is a threat to mine, particularly when we disagree on fundamental issues.

This has been an emotional song for me since it came out among many other anti-war in' Nam songs when I was 17; I was about to be Draft Bait the next year. (there's a version on YT - Vietnam Sky Pilot) My dad had lied about his age at 16 to get into the Air Force late in the Second WW... he was afraid he would miss the fighting, lol. And he did miss it anyway, because he trained as a Navigator and flew in the Berlin Air Lift. My mom's brother had died in flight training earlier in the war. I would have been willing to participate in WWII, but not in the police action that was 'Nam. As it was, my Draft number was like 32 or somethin, I went for the tests and was officer material , unfortunately. BUT got a 6 month Deferment because of an ulnar nerve problem; they were afraid I couldn't hold up a rifle for long periods, apparently. Time went by, and they never contacted me, and I sure as F never contacted them! Thanks for the video! And Happy Trails to you!

Pappy Boyington, a WWII ace pilot who flew in the South Pacific... and I'm listening to SKY PILOT, when my grandfather walks in an informs me that a "sky pilot" is a chaplain and that he flew dive bombers at the same time and from the same islands during WWII. He never ever spoke of the war again... as I noticed with a lot of veterans (like from the Vietnam War) who have seen a lot of action.

The conclusion, whether win or lose, is death or long-term suffering for a large number of those who fought, as well as many civilians. Having "rules of war" has been proven time and time again to be complete nonsense. Not to mention that military people are humans with caring families too, not just "legitimate targets". Ok, are you ready for this FYI? The Beatles and the Animals were very close in 1963-65 and used to party and frequent the London clubs together. John Lennon and Eric Burdon had an intimate friendship starting early on and shared various 'groupies' together, which is where Lennon became aware of one of Eric Burdon's fetishes; at the climax of each love making session, Eric would break a raw egg onto the stomach of his lady! He was well known for doing this to multiple women in the 1960's. When Lennon sings 'I am the egg man' in 'I am the Walrus', this is what he was referring to. Swear to gawd! Not making this up! I've come across this fact several times over the years, from various sources. I'm hoping Mark Lewisohn's next installment of his Beatles biography touches on this story so we can finally get the truth. In the meantime, I'll just continue making omelets... has anyone else out there heard this story???

Over a month ago you said you were going to do more George and I am an old man who still struggles with patience. The original While Guitar Gently Weeps is a Beatles song written and sung by George. I was wanted to say I first heard Sky Pilot back when it first came out in the early 70’s during the Vietnam war. It was especially poignant because 3 of my brothers and I were of draft age. One joined the National Guard. One was jailed after being declined as a conscientious objector and the brother and myself draft numbers was too high and were not needed. None of us wanted to fight and possibly die in a meaningless war that politicians, arms manufacturers and despots were propping up. It was a difficult time in our countries history. This song spoke to that era.

At the time, "sky pilot" was an adjective for someone who'd completely lost touch with what could be reasonably accomplished given existing realities, reinforcing failure.

Not true. At the time, a Sky Pilot was British and American slang title given to members of the clergy, especially those serving in the armed forces. And it is a title, which makes it a noun, consisting internally of a noun (pilot) and an adjective (sky).

@@richarddefortuna2252 That's accurate, I just was generalizing to avoid picking on clergy. They were just the fall guys tasked by other 'responsible leaders' to encourage troops to march forward with God's grace to accomplish questionable and as it turned out unattainable goals.

In between The Animals and Eric Burdon & The Animals Eric did a solo LP called "Eric Is Here" that includes a version of "Mama Told Me Not to Come" a few years before Three Dog Night had a hit with it.
