Wow, this was unexpected as hell... so much blues influence in the vocals and the guitars. This song was pure swagger incarnate. These guys are awesome.

He's talking about the difference between pot dealers and heroin pushers. He was saying that if you want to smoke some weed, cool, but stay away from heroin, it'll kill you. Also both times I saw them, John Kay was playing guitar in stereo. Lyrics by Hoyt Axton. A country musician who wrote some rock songs.

I was in 4th grade when this album came out, one of my older brothers had it. Basically the song is pro weed, someone who sold weed was a dealer, the common slang someone that sold heroin was a pusher.

If this were a single, the flip side should have been, Don't Step on the Grass Sam. It was on their second LP, that came out in October of the same year. It is very much a pro weed tune that is sadly overlooked. I think there's only a few reviews/reactions of it done on RU-vid so far.

Steppenwolf was an American-Canadian band but actually it also had German parts. Singer John Kay's name is Joachim Krauledat and he is German-Canadian. He and his mother only moved to Canada when they were young. Rushton Moreve was replaced at the end of the sixties by the bassist Nich St. Nicolas (Klaus Karl Kassbaum), who was also of German origin. A very good piece is "Monster" which consists of three pieces "Monster/Suicide/America". Other good songs by Steppenwolf are: "Snowblind Friend" also an anti-drug song, "Rock me Baby", "Magic Carpet Ride" , "Sookie Sookie", "It's Never Too Late"

One time a group of us were surfing near the Huntington Beach pier...we were leaving and right across the street from the pier there was a small venue called The Golden Bear, it was nothing more than a glorified bar with a couple dozen table and seats around the stage, almost like a strip joint. The marquee said "tonight only Steppenwolf" so we stopped an bought tickets. Went home and showered then came back for the show....there were signs on the seats around the stage that said Reserved...my friend took the signs off and we sat down....a waiter came over and said the seats were reserved, without skipping a beat my friend said, yea we reserved them last week...the waiter said OK and walked away...the band came out and played no more than 5 feet from us....John Kay even gave me a high five at one point....great night!!

This album brings back memories. I bought this album when I was 12 and it first was released. One day I was playing it in my bedroom while getting dressed for a baseball game and I guess it was too loud because my mom came rushing into my room screaming at me about the noise. She then ripped the album off my turntable and threw it across my room like a frisbee where it crashed into the wall, put a gash in the drywall, and shattered into pieces. I was stunned, but I didn't say anything and left the house for my Pony League baseball game. Apparently, my mom felt bad about it and by the time I got home there was a brand new Steppenwolf album laying on my bed. Steppenwolf has many great songs to choose from and their "Greatest Hits" album with 18 great tracks would be a good place to start exploring their music. P.S. Thanks for reminding me how damn old I'm getting now.

I had a set of Pearls. But then I went full time guitar/keys. Did that for close to 20 years....bars...clubs...on the road. Then last year I saw that Alesis had an e-kit pretty cheap...Nitro. I have been using Alesis drum machine since the 90s. So I bought one and the extension kit. Never was a fan on E-kits.....but boy its kind of fun.

Goldy upgraded to a Hammond B3 and the guitars changed too, but Jerry only played Rodgers drums and then later switched to Ludwig. And Jerry really was upset that the sound of the band changed too, which it did, the first two albums were similar in some ways but that first album he said "was the Steppenwolf sound". And of course firing Rushton and Mike really changed the sound, the members who joined later were good but the sound changed, although some people liked the lineup on the "7" album the most.

Thanks to Easy Rider this song got heard. I also discovered the very quirky "Holy Modal Rounders" via Easy Rider. I think I could best describe Holy Modal Rounder's sound as "acid country". Alleged in Their Own Mind" is not for everyone but it's one of my favorite albums. Try the song "Nova" on for size before diving further.
