well since the rolling stones track is so short, I had to add the Linda cover on to the video for the female perspective version of the song. What a great track... and a great cover too. Almost note for note, minus the piano being more up front in the mix for Linda. I loved the bass from Mick and of course Mick Jagger's vocals as usual. Great track. Thank you to our patron Scott for the stones pick as always!

"Tumbling Dice" is a rock song written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards for The Rolling Stones' 1972 double album Exile on Main St. and was the album's first single. The single peaked at #7 on the charts in the United States and #5 in the United Kingdom. The lyrics tell the story of a gambler who cannot remain faithful to any woman. Cover versions have been created in such diverse styles as reggae, bluegrass and noise rock. An updated version from a female perspective was also a top 40 single for Linda Ronstadt in 1978 which is included in the film FM.

Mick changed some of the lyrics for Linda and requested she sing the song. Her biographical television production talked about his request to her and she did it. Her live version at one of concerts rocks you off your feet. She did “Desperado” after Don Henley asked her to redo it because it didn’t sell enough records. She did that too and became a big hit. She dated JD Souther and may he RIP. Linda is a giant on her own. Her movie “The Sound of My Voice” talks about being a solo female singer in a predominantly male industry in the late sixties and during the seventies and mentions how she was very supportive of Don Henley and Glenn Frey leaving her band and starting the Eagles. She talks about how she developed supra nuclear palsy and can no longer sing. All if these singers are almost 80 and we are losing them sadly.

You Do Not Beat The Rolling Stones at their own game. This one track has every element that made the Stones “the greatest band in the world” distilled into one song: the swagger, the soul, the backup singers and fat-sassy horns swinging for the bleachers, and Mick in full strut. Linda, by contrast, has such fine pop instincts. Her version is lighter and easy on the ears; certainly nothing to be ashamed of. You want to hear her at her rocking best? Check out the tracks from “Mad Love,” which is basically Linda’s Blondie-inspired moment. She shreds 90% of the time.

This was originally titled "Good Time Woman," with different lyrics. Mick Jagger told the story of the song to The Sun newspaper May 21, 2010: "It started out with a great riff from Keith and we had it down as a completed song called Good Time Women. That take is one of the bonus tracks on the new Exile package; it was quite fast and sounded great but I wasn't happy with the lyrics. Later, I got the title in my head, 'call me the tumbling dice' so I had the theme for it. I didn't know anything about dice playing but I knew lots of jargon used by dice players. I'd heard gamblers in casinos shouting it out. I asked my housekeeper if she played dice. She did and she told me these terms. That was the inspiration."

If I'm gonna be honest, I've aways preferred Linda's version. I was never able to make out all the lyrics to this song on the Stones' version with Mick's slurred vocals. Then when I bought Linda's "Simple Dreams" LP brand new in '77, I was actually able hear what what was being sung. (It's my overall favorite Ronstadt album out of all of her LPs ("Blue Bayou", "I Never Will Marry" with Dolly Parton, "Poor Pitiful Me", Carmelita", It's So Easy", Tumbling Dice" ....great stuff!.)

In the mid-‘80s, when Mick Jagger decided that The Rolling Stones were a “millstone” around his neck and he was going to be a solo artist, he seriously upset and pissed off Keith Richards, who decided he’d better do an album himself. He called Waddy Wachtel and Steve Jordan, and together they put together a band they called The Expensive Winos and released an album, ‘Talk Is Cheap’, that was so good that Jagger thought he was getting left behind and ran back to the Stones. Thank you, Waddy! Steve Jordan, of course, has been their post-Charlie drummer. Thanks, Steve. You should check out that album. It really is an excellent groove-driven record. First track is “Big Enough”, pure James Brown, even with Bootsy and Maceo on it! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VSwwHvPrn5E.htmlsi=2XLIOQc-OwHvZM8Z

In England, tax rates were raised, and a number of celebrities left the U.K. to avoid taxes. some moved to the US, or Spain. The Stones, went to the south coast of France, rented a villa. They could switch, eat, drink, and record when they wanted to. A Mobile Van was equipped with recording console, wires, tapes - driven to to France, parked, and recorded this album. Later, Led Zep' and other hired The Stones 'mobile" to record at other non-studio locations, for famous albums, and concerts. This unique studio is now preserved in Canada (saw a documentary, about)

Linda Ronstadt's version is better. Mick Jagger agrees!

I prefer Linda's version because I can understand the lyrics.😊

Never understood why the Glimmer Twins buried the vocals on Exile on Main Street. I'd rather listen to Linda's rendition

Agreed. It spoils what should have been their greatest album. But it's not.

Nice version by Linda but nothing touches the sinuous, sleazy, bar room feel of the Stones.

Assuming this is the version from the Stones compilation album you're showing there, what have they done to the sound? The original vinyl version, while it does have a deliberately sloppy kind of production, sounds so much better than this (even allowing for RU-vid's compression). Baffling.

The Best Rolling Stones Song Ever from One of the Two Top Bands Ever (Beatles & Stones).❤ The cover song was not my cup of tea or pairing IMO ...imagine Pat Benatar singing the Beatles I am the Walrus! 😅 Just wasn't feeling that....

It’s hard to fill air time on a 3 minute track. Better to pair it with something so it’s not just a 6 minute video lol 😂

@@L33Reacts I'd rather hear 3 more minutes of your in-depth analysis of what you thought about the song and your personal takes at the end of your videos which is my favorite. This video became mostly about her when for me I was hoping to hear more about what you thought of the Stones...just saying💯❤️ It's your channel.

I don't hear much guitar other than a couple by Keef for most of it, I was thinking Bill was doing great, but it appears to have been Mick Taylor filling in. Takin' one for the team. Both the Stones and Linda genre-jumped with ease, tackling country, rock, balladry and ethnic and regional styles and rhythms with natural ease. ✌🏼😊🎶🪄✨️🪨🪨🎲🎲
