Hey Lee I just sent you something on “Thanks$”, wish it was more but I hope it helps, as I said before on one of your YES Saturday you should listen to “That, That Is” from the 1996 Keys to the Ascension album it’s a YES Masterpiece that many don’t know about but it’s such a great definition of Jon’s Lyrics of Life, Love, Hope, & Redemption it’s really an awesome piece! It tell us How the Angels Sings, it asks How Did Heaven Begin? Plus it tells you how you come to the Shore of Love Eternal, it’s an awesome song to say the least & like Turn of The Century it always brings me to tears.

This is the pinnacle of what Yes could produce: lush, evocative, exquisite, symphonic with all the complex interlocking parts that trade off and weave into each other, tugging at the heartstrings with simultaneous beauty and power. The lyrics even [mostly] make sense!

Yes, this is a real showcase for Jon and Steve in particular... must be one of the most beautiful and carefully constructed stretches of guitar playing Steve Howe ever laid down in the studio. There's also a version he did twenty years later with Annie Haslam (lead singer with British prog rock band Renaissance) singing those soaring vocal lines - equally beautiful.

The great thing about Alan on this song is that he wrote the lovely chord progression that forms the basis of it, but he steps back and lets others shine in developing and presenting it, which they do with virtuoso skill and beauty.. He just adds some subtle percussion and vibraphone at certain points, but had the humility and artistic integrity not to impose himself on the performance, even though he initiated the piece.

Steve's playing a 1956 Les Paul Custom. He picked it because it's a very fast playing guitar with low small frets. You can set it up with extremely low action. He said he used it because he had to play a lot of notes.

Hey Lee I have every intention to sending a gift to you & your girls but being a goof I lost the info on how to send it, so if you could resending the info I’ll get it out asap. A YES Song that gets overlooked is from 1996 Keys To the Ascension is called, “That, That Is”. And listening to people saying their older music isn’t that good is bullshit, there is nothing YES does that isn’t awesome all it takes is to listen to actually listen to YES, I believe what you have are fans who think that YES 3rd thru 8th albums are great & they are but if you listen to YES’S Whole Catalogue you will hears many gems from beginning to end. Lee put your trust in GOD THE CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE & everything will be okay, plus Praying for the World isn’t negative actually it’s just the opposite, it’s very positive never feel weird about Praying for Redemption of our sick world. Even though there's hardly any drumming, Alan White was a co-writer on this track, along with Anderson and Howe. Pretty amazing. "TOTC" is a very special YesSong and it's on the same album as "Awaken" and "Wonderous Stories". The guys were all happy to be reunited with each other and with Rick Wakeman after a four year separation. The next album, _Tormato,_ was a very difficult one for them, but there are still many good songs on it: "Future Times/Rejoice", "Don't Kill the Whale", "Circus of Heaven", "Onward", "On the Silent Wings of Freedom", etc.

It starts as a conversation between Steve and Jon with Rick and Chris holding back, and just supporting where needed. Later Rick gets his moments and its a three way conversation, with Chris STILL staying in the background and just supporting. Its a masterclass in restraint despite the fact that Chris can practically "out prog" all of them and dominate if he wants to- but he instead, serves the song, as it ahould be, no matter how much of a virtuoso player he is.

This song expresses the feeling of love, and loss, in such an incredible way. So many thousands of mainstream songs that address these same themes don’t come close to nailing it the way this song does! The musical quality, the quirky-as-usual lyrical choices, and Jon’s magical voice are a perfect blend, and create a perfect love song. Not trite like so many love songs, but deep and meaningful. It hits the very core of your being! I saw Yes a few times, and the best was their “Masterworks” tour where they focused on their longer tracks for the whole set. To your point, it was literally a kind of religious/spiritual experience.

Sonic Perspectives: Scott Medina interviews Alan White (2019) (SM) Well, we like to close our interviews with, with a song from the band. Is there one particular song that you would like us to feature that does feature you or is special to you? (AW) "Turn of the Century". How about that? (SM) Yeah, so you co-wrote that with Steve. Is there anything you want to share about that experience of writing that song? (AW) Well, I actually wrote that on piano and then Steve did an adaption of the chords that I came up with. And then Jon basically plays the same melody as I played on the piano, that's the song. So it came together relatively quickly and I know a lot of people love that song. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Hh2AtH8_n6A.html

thanks for another great reaction man! We feel ya :) I can't help but giving you some tips for other tracks with each reaction. I know I'm not a paying subscriber but still, it's enthousiasm. It's true Yes's modern sounds is somewhat different, as was everything in the 80's in the end. (In response to your after thoughts) They do 'redeem' themselves with later albums like 'Magnification' . However before going forward, you might actually wanna dive in the 1969 'Time and a Word' album. It's insane what sound they bring in their second album, for example 'The Prophet' is one of the most underrated unknown epic songs of all time ever just for the organ intro alone. It's one the deepest, eeriest heaviest and yet most soul touchingly beautiful organ plays ever introduced into modern music. But all of those tracks contain a certain jazzy fusion style that is rare for today and no less proggy and musical than yes' other masterpieces.

Listen to the song again....and listen with your loved one in mind. Steve Howe is a Troubadour of the modern era and he is not alone....Tom Petty and Ian Anderson are also troubadour, too. They play their instruments like they are in the court yard of the Kings and Queens which is us.....Steve Howe masters 19 string instruments!!!

It took me a long time to appreciate this song by Yes, my favorite band, because it's such a spare and straightforward love song. It's very nice, but I prefer the Steve Howe/Annie Haslam version. Still, even though it's not my favorite Yes song, I do like it. As far as sweet songs by Yes, I prefer "Wondrous Stories," which actually is the most beautiful song ever, IMHO. ❤✌

Living paycheck to paycheck is how it's been since Ronnie Raygun. Lower yer expectations between what has passed and what may happen and the stress lessens. And later, enjoy Awaken, which Jon said turned out to be the fifth movement of Tales. It indeed belongs. All things good, in good time.

Hey L33! - that quiet pipe-organ bit in the last 15 seconds is actually a small intro to the next track, Parallels, but which has been resolutely stuck on the end of Turn Of The Century ever since they started digitising music, and it drives me mad. Chris is playing a Gibson Triumph bass, probably tuned away from regular EADG, and that's what's allowing him to play those very high notes in the piano solo section. Alan is playing some tuned percussion, including timpani in the joyous E major section after the piano solo. Of *course* Steve can play bass... he does it on his solo albums, but you can see him on a Rick at the R&R Hall of Fame induction for Owner of a Lonely Heart ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tQ-IQalrAz8.html&ab_channel=Rock%26RollHallofFame

@@L33Reacts I think Rick is really insane... He record about 100 LP. Imagine this... concert on ice. He do that. But his Lp journey to the centre of earth an return to the centre of earth is epic. And 6 wifes of henry 8. But Steve is in my opinion very underrated and this is not right. I love his riffs and solos.

Steve Howe is unmatched as an acoustic guitar player in rock. His writing and his playing are incredible. I’ve been listening to music for 50 years, I have over 8000 album… I and I still haven’t heard anyone better on acoustic in rock. I suspect that it’s because of the fact that he is so versatile and combines elements of various musical styles better than anyone. There’s lot of acoustic gems on his solo albums too! In early ‘80s he was asked by Steve Morse to play on an acoustic duet titled « Up in the Air ». Howe recorded his part in the UK and sent the tapes to Morse. Morse commented on the fact that Howe sounded better than him. And Morse is no slouch! Her was voted best overall guitar player in Guitar Player’s magazine, after Howe had won it five time in a row and wasn’t eligible anymore (after 5 times he ended up in Guitar Player’s Hall of Fame.

What you heard at the end was a very faint bit of marimba played by Alan White and I think the chords are the same as the song that follows, Parallels. BTW, did you do Awaken? That song is like walking through the gates of heaven.

I think you are thinking of music with ties to the ‘baroque’ era. Very ornate and busy, but beautiful. There is no band that really compares to Yes. And I know what you’re saying, that when “it’s just Steve and John” it’s incredible”; that may be but the more you listen the more you realize it’s never “just” any one to two but all of them. When I would go to a show back in the day, I would shift my focus from Steve, to Jon, to Chris, and to Rick and whoever sat on drums and just be amazed at all of them! Parallels next? And just so you know, we are all, more and more, Closer to the Edge, not just financially speaking, but politics and media just getting more divisive. Stay the course and stay with Yes!
