I bought “Meaty Beaty big and Bouncy” (possibly the best compilation album ever) in 1973 when I was 13. I first saw The Who at Wembley in 1975. Thus beginning a life long relationship and love affair with The Who. Your enthusiasm for them makes me happy. Thumbs up to Who Wednesdays 👍 No band has ever had four lead musicians like The Who!

Keith was definitely struggling on that album, but still the best possible drummer for the album. Keith also is well known as rock and roll's biggest and craziest party animal, which I guess is what ended up taking such a toll on him. Probably slightly autistic, and definitely big ADHD, he had a completely unique kind of brilliance, both on the drums, and in his sense of humour.

In high school in the late 60's , a girl I knew made me take her to the Dallas Market Hall to see Herman' s Hermits. The band that opened for them was... The Who. They played My Generation, Substitute, Happy Jack, and more. Then they started destroying their instruments on stage. This was conservative Dallas fer F's sake! I barely remember Herman's Hermits, but my musical life was forever changed after that performance by The Who.

I'm always fascinated by how bands get together, The Who started as The Detours in 1962 by Roger Daltry, John Entwistle and Pete Townsend they all went to the same school and one day Roger saw John carrying a bass guitar, started a conversation and they decided to form a band John knew Pete and suggested he join as lead guitar, Roger was not a vocalist at this time and played rhythm. Roger switched to vocals, Pete became the sole guitarist, with Keith joining the band in 1964 their first hit was Can't Explain in 1965. It is an amazing coincidence that such world class musicians lived so close to each other and fate had them meet and form a band, like Lennon and McCartney being school friends and both having multi instrumentalist skills and crazy song writing abilities, and Keith Richards and Mick Jagger were school friends but never knew about each others music taste until they left school and met at a train station Keith noticed Mick was carrying records by Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters, started a conversation and they kept in touch and eventually formed a band. Things could have been so much different if all these chance encounters never happened.

Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson are two other classic rockers who went to the same middle school together near Toronto and have been friends and band mates ever since.
@simply_psi
@simply_psi 5 месяцев назад
@bostonwhofan exactly what are the chances of that, I love this sort of thing, same with Ozzy and Tony from Black Sabbath. Where as bands like Led Zeppelin were formed by people who had worked together as session musicians and eventually in bands together leaving to form their own band relying far less on chance and coincidence, totally fascinates me, especially in this day and age of manufactured bands that are either put together by management companies or through TV shows, it's just not the same somehow.

Good luck Lee with the turntable. Be advised that you do need a Pre-Amp to plug into, either on a receiver, or a separate Pre-Amp piece. I used to work in an AV store, so I can't help myself with the useless advice. The saddest thing about The WHO album "Who Are You" is the cover photo, with Keith sitting on a chair that says "Not To Be Taken Away". And he was gone soon after, so ironic. And it is a great album. Love this video, and seeing the band in the studio.

My all time favourite music promo clip. FYI, the original studio version of "Who Are You" is considerably longer with an extra verse. Great reaction man. It's so wonderful to see someone such as yourself getting into this incredible band. Make sure you don't skip their '60's catalogue. They literally reshaped the genre and influenced every form of hard rock that came after them. Their 1965 debut album My Generation is another to check out. And a couple more live clips to consider, "My Generation" from Monterey 1967, "A Quick One While He's Away" from the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus 1968, and "See Me, Feel Me" from Woodstock 1969. I would do Tommy before Quadrophenia only because it was released before it.

Many years ago, I was at a garage sale and found a bunch of vinyl albums being sold at insanely cheap prices. I came out of that sale with a bunch of albums, some of them rare, and one of them was an original US pressing of Live At Leeds with all the inserts included (Woodstock contract, rejection letter from EMI, etc.). That "rich man's copy" cost me all of $2.50 Canadian. I was unbelievably lucky to find that, because I'd seen original copies in used record stores that were priced out of this world. So you have my sympathies for the "poor man's copy" that you had to settle for.

L33, please listen to more classic Who. A lot of great early singles, (do a few together?), "I Can See For Miles" is amazing. Also, their Live performances "My Generation" at Monterey Pop, and "A Quick One" at "Rolling Stones R&R Circus". Important to hear "Tommy", among the most important albums EVER! Ground breaking concept-album/prog-psychedelic. Try "Overture" into "It's A Boy", or "Acid Queen" into "Underture". And please hear "Tommy" before watching the Movie ( great film, uneven music). Try "Who's Next", every song is GREAT. And then the concept album "Quadrophinia", try first and last song "The Real Me" and "Love Reign O'er Me".

Isle of Wight is one of the greatest shows, yet apparently the Who only went on-stage at 2:00 AM! Somehow they played 30+ songs, and every number was at max-energy and power. "Young Man Blues" is often mentioned as the best performance that night, but every song is intense. Some other great moments are "Water" and "Don't Even Know Myself", and the whole section from "Tommy". This show followed their earlier "Live At Leeds", and documents the Who at the height of their power, right before they recorded the "Lifehouse Project" that became "Who's Next".@@steveowens2505

Only bass players who started out in the early 60's could get away with John's thumb style. It's such a throwback. 😄 But yeah, this studio footage was put together for 'The Kids Are Alright' film. They just happened to be working on this song at the same time as the film was being made, plus they knew it would be their next single. The live footage of them playing "Won't Get Fooled Again" was shot at the same time (plus a bunch of interviews.) Anyways, Go See 'The Kids Are Alright'! 😁 BTW, I'd recommend 'Tommy' before 'Quadrophenia'. They're both double concept/storyline albums, but it's always useful to hear the band's progression from the earlier form to a more mature version with better recording capabilities.

This is a very enjoyable recording for the Movie "The Kids Are All RIght", a studio outtake during "Who Are You". Watch the equally great "The Kids' footage Live at Shepperton Studios 1978. Amazing "Won't Get Fooled Again" and a very good "Baba O'Riley". In the studio, the band is in unusually good spirits for the cameras. Keep in mind that Moon was near death, "Who Are You" was his last great studio drumming. By 1978, Moon's physical decline was rather shocking, comparing footage from his prime, like "Monterey Pop", "Rolling Stones R&R Circus", or " Isle of Wight". But I'm glad Moon had this final Hurrah!

If you get a turntable, you should also get a good amp & speakers. Headphones don't cut it. If you're listening to The Who, or Led Zeppelin, your neighbors should be as well!

Did you know that Keith Moon actually used to put explosives in his drum kit until he put too much in on a tv show, and practically blew the set apart😄 He was also famous for driving his car into his swimming pool . God love him ❤️

You should check out The Who tribute to New York City. They were much older but just as good. (Ringo's son was on the drums)

@L33Reacts I always enjoy The Who. Something you may want to check out. A song originally released by Roger Daltrey called Under A Raging Moon but look for the live version by Entwistle. It's a celebration of Keith Moon.

On the studio version of 'Under a Raging Moon', towards the end there is a tribute to Keith where the following drummers all played a short drum solo: Martin Chambers (Pretenders), Roger Taylor (Queen), Cozy Powell (Rainbow, Black Sabbath), Stewart Copeland (The Police), Zak Starkey (The Who, Oasis), Carl Palmer (Emerson, Lake, and Palmer), and Mark Brzezicki (Big Country).
