There are some creative adjustments (Roger is not doing THE scream when Pete does his slide). Also, Moon is clearly not in great shape. It is a step down from their best work which was from maybe 69-75. Just my opinion...and I did see them during those peak years
@dandare42
@dandare42 Месяц назад
@@billbitterman9487 True enough. It's a few years past their peak, but past their prime Who is still better than 99 percent of bands :D They hadn't played much together since '76 when this was shot so they're a bit off. Roger's voice had gotten a bit more hoarse in the prior few years while Keith was finally breaking down from all the abuse he put himself through and his weight gain combined with that, turned him into a much more lumbering drummer. Gone are his impressive fills and fast stickwork, replaced by more thumping and sloppier technique. And yet, still sounds better than most drummers!

When The Who were performing this gig at Shepperton Studios for their film "The Kids Are Alright", in the studio next door - the movie "Alien" was being filmed. The cast and crew of "Alien" took a break and went over to watch The Who gig. They liked the laser show at the end of WGFA so much, they ended up borrowing The Who's laser equipment and used it in the Alien movie. So the next time you're watching "Alien", keep an eye out for The Who's lasers! On a different note, also in attendance at that gig was an unknown Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders.

The Who actually did 2 different shows at Shepperton. The first one lasted about 90 minutes. The director didn’t think the energy level was high enough, so he had them come back weeks later and just do “Won’t get fooled again” and “Baba O’Reilly” because those were the two tracks they wanted for the film. Townsend’s hyperactivity was a response to the criticism of the first show.

Compelling laser display for 1978. I remember when lasers were first developed c.1961. The first ones produced "coherent" light by wrapping a flash tube around a ruby rod so the light produced was red. These were blue so probably ionic argon. FWIW. Keith was showing the effects of chronic alcohol abuse and looking unhealthy. He died shortly after this I believe. Pete experimented with psychedelics - everybody did - but quickly became disillusioned and would say that drugs were the "worst things on the planet." This was the last of the REAL Who IMO. They carried on minus Keith and his manic energy. But there was only one Keith

Lasers were a relatively new stage effect at the time, and The WHO used them here, because they were in a real film studio, and it was a good environment to do it in. Love John Entwistle's Bass, with the spider web on it, a reference to his song "Boris The Spider", which I don't think you have reacted to yet. It is a fun, "novelty" tune, and John sings it. Witnessed the Who in Orlando at the T Bowl 5 years after this was recorded & I have to say that they absolutely assault you with their music. Moon was already gone but the music remained the same. The I are better live.

Why Pete is rarely mentioned in the top ten of rock guitarists is beyond me. FWIW, I always heard that this take was the second take they did that day because the director told them after the first take was not the definitive take that he wanted. So they went back out and produced this masterpiece. Their prime? I'd say 1969-1976.

One of their best live performances. This is Rock and Roll’s theme song! The album is perhaps the very best rock album of all time and just forget about that Lighthouse project. WHO gives a F’ about it!

It is a bit sad that there is so little film footage of The Who during their heyday after the 1971 recording of Who's Next. There are tons of photos of their concerts which look amazing. This was filmed 7 years after that album, and it was old news by that time. The band was a bit older with a bit more weight and Townshend spent less time airborne or smashing guitars. It's a good vid, but makes me wish we had earlier footage with the Who's Next material (Woodstock, Monterey Pop, and Isle of Wight were all before Who's Next).

Great vid as usual. Thank you. That fucking Les Paul. He put it over his head and I FROZE. I knew what he was gonna do. Smash that Beautiful piece of work. That Lester Paul still finished the fucking show.

Yeah, laser light shows were a thing at the time. Most of the major bands had them.... for a while.

@@L33Reacts 1966 my first concert was at the Hollywood Bowl. I was 15. The Who, The Animals, Everly Brothers, Sopwith Camel and the Association. The Who were still breaking up their instruments at the end of their performance. They were great and so were The Animals. It was raining and not many people there. Eric Burdon performed barefoot in the rain. I will never forget it. I was hooked for the rest of my life.

Wonder how Pete’s knees are doing these days? Keith😊😍Thank you for sharing. I love these guys! Early Emerson, Lake, and Palmer were pretty flamboyant and did lots of cool stuff w light etc too.

Yeah, CSI loves WHO! ... There are several CSI shows on TV (like CSI Miami, CSI New York, CSI Las Vegas, ...) and they all use WHO songs as their intro / theme song. "Won't Get Fooled Again", "Who Are You?", "I Can See For Miles", "Baba O'Riley", ... I guess that some guy at the "CSI studio" is a WHO fan!? o_O XD
