Barry's hot streak rolls on... wow. What a track. I swear I have heard some of this before somehow but this was fantastic. I love Jazz Fusion so much now.... what an incredible genre. You can do anything. It's wild.

Thanks for a great reaction! I love seeing someone experience Dirty Loops for the first time. They started the group as a hobby project in 2008, and never thought it would be anything other than that, and did twisted jazz fusion covers of top 40 pop songs. In 2010 they put up a video on youtube (a cover of Lady Gaga's "Just Dance"), as a booking reference, to see if they could get a gig or two, just for fun, as they thought their music was way too unsexy for anyone to actually like it. Needless to say, they were completely wrong. The video went viral and a LOT of people absolutely loved it. In 2014 they released the album Loopified, which is mainly their own compositions with a few covers sprinkled in. The Phoenix EP was released in 2020 and is all their own compositions, and in 2021 they released a collab album, Turbo, with guitarist Cory Wong and his horn section. Everything they've ever released is of this ridiculous musical quality, so you could pretty much pick any song to listen to, and you more than likely would not be disappointed. They've all known each other and played together for 20+ years by now, in their mid-to-late-thirties. Jonah Nilsson (keyboard/vocals) and Henrik Linder (bass) even went to music elementary school together and met when Henrik was 11 and Jonah was 9. Aron Mellergård (drums) comes from another part of Sweden and came along when he moved to Stockholm at the age of 16, to attend the same music high school as they did (he was in the year between the other two). Then they all attended Kungliga Musikhögskolan (Royal College of Music) in Stockholm, where Henrik and Aron studied jazz/rock, and Jonah opted for music production as his main subject. There's an interview in Bass Magazin, which gives a wonderful insight into their process and the creation of the EP Phoenix, in which Henrik said the following about writing Work Shit Out, and about their approach to lyrics on the Phoenix EP: Question: "Work Shit Out” has a killer fretless, finger-funk bass line and it’s the most musically adventurous track on the EP." Henrik: "That’s how we conceived it, as a song that would evolve into a long improvised section with keyboard and drums solos. It started with Aron’s octave-jumping MIDI bass line. I wanted to simplify it a bit and remove one of the beats, but Aron insisted on his version, so I had to figure out how to play it because it’s a little unorthodox on bass. From there, Aron and I wrote the verse and the chorus, coming up with the one-note melody concept for the chorus. Then Jonah and Aron added all the harmonies. For Jonah’s solo, I stick pretty much to the root notes so he stretch and change the harmonies above them. It was a lot of fun to play the song live on a few gigs before the pandemic because it took different directions each time." Question: "Who wrote the lyrics?" Henrik: "Unfortunately, I did [laughs]. We’ve worked with some great lyricists, including our manager, Andreas Carlsson, on Loopified, and we’ll continue to collaborate with lyricists in the future. But this time around it was more about the sound of the lyrics than the context. For some of the songs, Aron sang nonsense English lyrics on his demos, and when he sent them to me to finish he said he wanted all the vowels to remain the same as in his nonsense lyrics, so that limited me. It’s more about the phoenetics than the meaning of the lyrics on these songs." If you want to read the whole interview, , just search for "Henrik Linder Songified", and it should pop right up. ☺

One of my all-time top ten bands. And I'm old. Love these guys. They've said in interviews that they got together to play the music that would get them fired as session musicians. This is what they love and want to do, not some formula. Quincy Jones manages them now.

Barry, thanks for that 🙏 And thanks for a rad reaction bro, this was super interesting. I loved all your ideas and thoughts about this piece and those three guys, the influences you’ve heard, really very interesting to me…. And you weren’t far off, Beyoncé came out with a song ‘Work It Out’. And whilst this isn’t a cover, still, the Loops might’ve played on that, both writing-wise and with the title :) as they do with many of their tracks, they start out nice and poppy, and then take it up a notch and completely blow everyone’s mind 🤯💥 😉 Initially, when exploding into the music scene, they did quite a few covers, -all of them mindblowing fusion stuff (see their first album Loopified). And even more recently their style of writing often is to first come up with a simple pop-like melody and then ‘loopify’ it, ‘destroy’ it, or ‘do the surgery’, and build their genre-bending ideas around it. Three guys from Sweden, friends for many years, all trained at the top Swedish music school, having studied music from jazz to everything else. Check them out online, they’re worth the deep dive. So are all of their songs, covers and everything. Their bassist, Henrik Linder, is an absolute beast on bass…. Aron is on drums… And Jonah on vocals and keys…. Oh and btw Aron comes up with a lot of their compositional parts, including melodies bass lines, etc. AND he edits all of their video footage…. You might find some time to check out an interview it’s Henrik on Bass Magazine slash Songified, where he explains a bit about each of their Phoenix tracks, including how his bass line came to be in this one, and how it was recorded. Thanks for featuring them, they deserve all the attention they can get. Cheers, from a big DL fan, and more Dirty Loops please ✌️🔥🤘☺️

Yes, that did blow my mind. It's crazy to think of the paths you take. I keep wondering if I never found this channel..... would I never hear this song? It is accidental or fate? I love this drummer. Crazy talented. "Maybe we never do grow up. Maybe it’s all a lie we tell ourselves to make us feel better.” Great quote, Lee. You could really be a writer.

Such a weird song, so pop sounding and yet...not at all. Music is on point. I went and watched the sideways reaction, btw. I think it's important to watch reactions for songs that we're unfamiliar with. I get used to clicking on Ren and Yes and Rush reactions because it's enjoyable to see someone discover works I've loved for so long. But I needed the reminder to check out new things as well. Thanks for mentioning it at the beginning of the video Lee. Also been busy the last few weeks and didn't realize how much of your content I've missed, lol. Lot's to catch up on.

Dirty Loops is a great rabbit hole for sure! But since you love Jazz Fusion, lemme introduce you to the group that brought it back to life in the last decade and a half: Snarky Puppy. Check out "Lingus" from the 2012 album "We Like It Here". And for extra mind-blowage, lemme inform ya... the drummer, Larnell Lewis, was a last-minute replacement due to a passport issue with their regular drummer. He had 48 hours' notice, learned the _entire album_ on the plane ride over to Europe, had one dress rehearsal, and then played the opener for their live studio audience. Also, it has perhaps the greatest jazz keyboard solo of this century so far.
