I met Shannon in 1990 doing a session in Nashville. During a break in the lobby, me being a young drummer myself was so impressed he was so young and so comfortable with all these other session legends in the room. I asked him who his favorite drummer was and I truly expected him to say one of Nashville drummers of the time but he said without hesitation “it’s Jeff Porcaro for me” How cool that he secured the ultimate gig in music for a drummer. He’s never at a loss for something to say but you can’t deny his talent and passion for music.

Jeff Porcaro will always be with us. Somewhere in the world 24/7 there is music being played with Jeff on it...on the radio, in someone's home or some kid playing drums along with Jeff on speakers

Another great interview, John! I'm so glad Shannon is back in Toto again... I love the way he drives the bus ;) Also, the way Shannon spoke about Jeff, really spoke to me and speaks volumes on Shannon's depth of character. I'll definitely check out Judson McKinney and the Wanderers and I hope I have a chance to see Toto this year. All the best to you guys, James

You do a SPECTACULAR job at asking a question and letting someone talk as long as they need to in order to answer the question. It’s really impressive and you deserve kudos for that.

Hey John , Been here about 3 years and a loyal subscriber. Your interviews are always great. I’m nine minutes into this interview and I already think this is the best interview I ever saw on the channel.. It’s such a high tribute to Jeff to hear the things Shanon spoke of. I so appreciate clicking on your vids. Thanks to you and your wife Shannon for always giving me great content every single time I click on your channels. 👍😎❤️

I just got the fortune to meet Shannon at their recent show in Albuquerque, and this man was so down to earth, kind, genuine, and just an all around great guy. We got to talk a little bit about the brilliance Jeff’s work on Rosanna and it was just so awesome to talk with him. Such a nice guy, and a brilliant musician who does such justice to the legacy of Mr. Porcaro

I just saw Toto live last week in Rochester. The band was great and Shannon was excellent. They started with Goodbye girl one of Jeff's most interstjng grooves from my perspective. Shannon nailed it. He is a lot closer to Jeff than Simon Phillips ( though Phillios is obviously another fine drummer). Really enjoyed then but they only played a hour.

I’m reminded of the statement “Allusion’s of Grander” I heard another young man State he was at Wood-Stock during the 1968 performance of Crosby, Stills and Nash with Neil Young. During this performance the Drummer was so High Off His Face he couldn’t play so this Gentleman I’m speaking of volunteered to fill in and pulled it off. He said the concert promoter’s gave him a Hundred Dollars and he smoked a joint with Crosby and Nash. A viewer then asked for his year of Birth and he quickly replied “1960”.. That would make him 8 year’s old when he saved the Day, snatched him up a $100.00 Bill and smoked a joint with Crosby and Nash while discussing what a great Gal Joanie Mitchell was in the sack as they both experienced it. For this reason I don’t take these bragging rights comments too seriously.

Shannon, you are so respectful, self-effacing, and humble. But here's the thang- I been listening to Wide Open over and over, and you're a monster groove player, mate. Kudos to you and all you do. You're a great player, mate. respect

For all Jeff fans there is an album by an Irish musician named paul Brady.. I have no idea how paul managed to get jeff on his album obv he went over to la to record and was extremely lucky jeff must have been the man in that studio (amongst many others I'm sure!) At the time and he has the fortune of having Jeff (and the amazing Freddie Washington on bass) record on his album ... the result is absolutely amazing.. the album is called Trick or Treat - its a MUST LISTEN and one of my fav jeff albums for sure!

Shannon clearly gets the heart of the music. ❤ Of course his perception of Jeff's musical swagger, and also things like the parts on songs like "Peg". Rick Marotta is also a giant who somehow is often overlooked these days. Another guy with a reputation for musical confidence.

Shannon has put words on what I feel for about 30 years now about Jeff : self confidence and attitude. There is only one other drummer having the same self confidence attitude and groove in my eyes : Vinnie Colaiuta... Self confidence is what I am chasing since I began playing drums almost 30 years ago and I think I will be chasing this for the rest of my life. Thanks for this great interview. Cheers from Switzerland

Excellent interview, Interesting that Shannon brought up growing up in the studio with this dad. Shannon and myself have a long time mutual friend, Rick Salyer that was working for his dad Ottis in the studio as Shannon was growing up. Later on, I was fortunate to spend many years in the studio with Rick. Rick was very proud of the work that Shannon was doing in Nashville and we talked many times about bringing him to the beach to track drums for us. Wished it would have worked out.

I aw Toto twice with Porcaro. Changed the way I thought about drumming! Seen them twice with Shannon. Not sure he was given the credit for his skill as a musician. Did the VIP ticket in London in 2018. was 3 rows from the front and couldnt take eyes off Shannon. Jake to the Bone (as someone mentioned below) was next level genius. Still get chills hearing it now! This guy is such a deep thinker, his respect for fellow musicians is humbly to hear. Many thanks for the interview John.

Interesting interview. Got to hear a lot of Shannon’s drumming during the Forty Trips Around the Sun with Toto. I always liked the sound of his drums. It seemed as if his drumming had a deeper richer sound. Not being a knowledgeable drummer, maybe he was just using the toms more. I especially loved his drumming on Jake to the Bone. You can see he’s excited and happy about these new projects. I’m looking forward to the next part of the interview. You mentioned Bernie Chiaravalle-I’ll be looking forward to that interview also.
