We explore the brand-new Sennheiser MD 421 Kompakt microphones! Known for their legendary sound on toms, the original MD 421 has been a top choice for studio use, but it came with a few limitations. Now, Sennheiser has introduced a more compact "Kompakt" version that addresses those issues.
We break down the features of the new MD 421 Kompakt, including its lighter weight, built-in stand adapter, and innovative hoop mount. Does the smaller size affect the sound quality? We put it to the test with side-by-side comparisons of the mic mounted on a stand versus clipped onto a drum hoop.
Could this versatile mic even change the game for live performances? Join us for an honest and in-depth review as we dive into the world of drum miking with the newest addition from Sennheiser.

I heard a clear difference. May be proximity effect but the clip increases low mids which is more prevalent especially during the decay which some may hear as ring

It could be psycho-acoustics, but I thought I heard a SLIGHT bit of choke on the decay with the clips, not enough to be offensive. I do think that stands give bit more options in positioning. I am glad you put this one out there! I did send one of those older models flying on the first day of a 4 day tracking session (not my studio or microphone!!!). Good thing they are rugged.

in a recording situation you're most likely going to cut and fade toms anyways, having that long lasting ring on anything will muddy up a mix.

The rim mount looks very similar to the ones that come with the Sennheiser e604, and those don't seem to transmit much vibration into the mic, so I'm not surprised that these ones also seem to work well on that front.

Still so expensive for a tom mic... No way I'm buying four of these 😂. Thanks for the video 😊

While these mics sound great, I'm curious how good or bad the rejection is compared to the regular MD421 as it usually tends to have a lot of bleed in them.

There’s definitely more lows when the mic is on the stand. The clips make the drum sound thin

They're a little brighter on clips than on stands; only difference I can hear on KH120 studio monitors. This is probably due to a change in where they're pointed more than anything.

i have on order. i will have to say though will not getting the clip. yea they work great in the studio but on stage with the monkeys i get and your mics get to bouncing around you go a different route. i use to use original 421s after several of their arms breaking ( these were not light mics) i now use lp clamps with shure 56 arms

How do you think this new mic will sound for snares??
@DickNargie
@DickNargie День назад
Couldn't imagine it would sound bad. The original was quite a versatile mic in each interation over the years. The one thing that I have learned about music and recording is there is "no formula" or template that needs to be followed or adhered to. If the situation calls for something or sounds pleasing to the ears on playback, then I say, use whatever you want.
