Drums and rhythm are Cornell Coley’s tools for activism. He has sculpted his Afro-Latin roots, performance training, drum circle facilitation skills and spiritual development into a full-time career that reaches people of all ages, nationalities and abilities. In this powerful, fun and creative talk he describes, demonstrates and performs to show you the magic - how his approach to drumming preps toddlers for learning, builds life skills in at-risk teens, and rewires your brain.
Cornell Coley is a full-time teaching artist, former folkloric dancer and arts administrator whose has won multiple grants and awards. His work and research have taken him to West Africa, across the USA, the Caribbean, Brazil, Mexico and Indonesia. He relishes the daily challenge of creating rhythm-based music in community to improve lives.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Drumming stimulates both hemispheres of the brain to create whole mind activation so you can be both creative and logical. Drumming is a powerful brain development activity that also supports emotional and psychological health. The rhythmic practice helps me develop a deeper sense of harmony and clarity of the mind. The drum is a simple instrument which can provide great healing benefits to the mind, body and spirit. Thank you for sharing this video that provides clear and interesting information.

I use drumming for my PTSD and it has changed my entire world for the better. It helps that I already am a percussionist and play several other instruments as well, however I can see this benefiting anyone who may be seeking alternatives to prescription medications.

Such an awesome talk. I’ve picked up hand drumming in the past two years and am enjoying it. I’m working on a PhD in community psychology and am thinking about trying to open a space for drumming and music as community-building. This has come in very handy.

I would love to see some kind of 80s style Hands Across America drum circle to help bring the rhythm of the world in sync.

My brother... I live less than 2 miles from Morehouse College... I am part of the drumming community of Atlanta Georgia... Everyone knows that... And what I need to hip you to my brother, is that you are educating those that have septic attitudes towards us to the game and how to come in and be poison with a smile on their face
