When I was shot in the head as a army combat medic it's the only thing that calms me down. I never used drugs from the VA other than pain meds. Psychiatrist tx is based on theory.

That officer could diffuse a nuclear bomb while laughing with it. That’s what we should all aspire to be. Doesn’t judge, just does the job and diffuses people in their worst moments.

Or just hire social workers and qualified individuals to respond to situations like that. Cops don’t want to respond to familial issues. Bringing a badge and a gun into situations like that doesn’t help anyone.

It's a process that needs to be done. Why? So that assaultive behavior is properly documented. This protects any victims, supports TPO's, RO's even guardianship, power of attorney. We used to be able to lock people in institutions utterly arbitrarily, but not now. In the past you could actually have your wife committed so you could carry on with other women, take her inheritance. In jail temporarily, he's safe, his family is safe. Until he, and the circumstance, can be properly evaluated. A course of action implementation. Part of CO's duties are to protect HIM, even from himself. I've SEEN numerous seemingly frail men with dementia etc seriously assault nurses and caregivers. Even kill other patients. Jail is not a bad place for him temporarily.

Police paired with Mental health Nurses do respond to certain calls in some cities. Police would be needed with elderly men that are violent, have weapons, and won't calmly accept they are demented. This is a step to being assessed by judges order by a Geriatrician, or Neurologist to see where his brain is at. Psych facilities don't diagnose the medical issue of brain degeneration. Some large psych facilities have geriatric units to help manage behaviour issues medically in order to get them into memory care facilities.

If he has dementia they should call adult protective services

What’s the biggest differences have you noticed?

@@melidoe452 as a fellow brit, there are loads: 1. For example, when you do the DUI's, you do field sobriety tests, we don't. We have police cars with breathalysers and drug testing machines so you can literally get out of a traffic stop after 5-10 minutes rather than the 30 minute videos we see. 2. When people get arrested in the UK, they are taken to a police station and put in their own cell rather than a jail full of people. You can also only be held for a maximum of 24 hours before being released. (however police can ask for extra time in the rather serious cases) I'm sure there's more but those are the only things I can say with what I've seen

@Meli Doe And the cars don't have push bars on the front or cages in the back seat. A lot of officers have tasers, but very few have guns. There are armed police who can be called upon when needed, but they don't usually patrol.

I believe it's a gross violation of the 8th amendment of the US constitution putting elders with a diminished mental capacity in jails. My mother has severe Alzheimers and gets violent because she is afraid all the time and could easily end up in jail. It's so cruel.

@@chrishanson1631 Unfortunately secure mental facilities aren't common or are private facilities too costly for those who need them, which means those too violent for the hospitals often end up in correctional institutions because that's the least worst option for holding them. Cruel? Perhaps, but still better than the streets.

I agree with dealing with dementia/alzheimers. My gma had that and it's so sad when they don't recognize you they get scared and defend themselves. So sad.

Also of course jail isn’t the ideal place but unfortunately it’s the only place that they can ensure not only his families safety, but his safety from himself.

@@moosehead1183 not sure what you mean. Dementia is devastating. I know all too well as I walk this path with my mother in law for the last few years. Jail for someone with dementia should be criminal, I’ll just start with that. Support for dementia Patients is crucial. Idk if I have enough time to get into all of that here tho.

All uses of force are investigated by a separate agency so I guess it was justified now wasn't it😁
