I like that the Trelino doesn't look anything like a toilet, especially for a small van space.

The Wrappon Trekker dry flush is similar to the Laveo. It’s made in Japan and is the Lexus of dry flush toilets. It heat seals the plastic waste bag instead of twisting it to seal. The per flush is less then half the Laveo but the unit is about $600-700 more at around $1600. Like to see a comparison between these two dry flush toilets. We’ve used both and prefer the Wrappon slightly vs the Laveo

We've been using the midsized Trelino Evo in our Aliner Ranger 12 for about a month now. Typically, for two people, we empty the urine pail every morning and rinse it out. We have used the Trelino for number 2 frequently. It works very well with a composting or drying material. We've used coconut coir, clay-based kitty litter, and now we're using potting mix, which works perfectly. There have been no problems with odors in our trailer at all with either urine or stool. The key is to keep the two of them separate and the Trelino works exceptionally well for that. My wife is the one who uses the toilet and she loves it. [I empty my pee bottle into the Trelino each morning.] The unit is compact and fits under our bed when we travel. When we are camping, it fits in front of the door and serves as a separate little bathroom. Lastly, the Trelino is far less expensive than similar diverting toilets. Even so, it's well made, strong, and durable. We highly recommend the Trelino -- with which brand we have no affiliation.

Been using the immediate disposal method for poop on our sailboat for years. No holding tank to worry about. We use grocery bags and put the used bag into a used potato chip or corn chip bag to keep the odors away. Have you ever smelled potato chips in the snack isle? No because all the bags are airtight. We just save the used chip bags and they work very well if we can't get to a disposal place right away. Trelino for us in our current van build. And.....thanks for the great comparison video....well done.

Hands down, the separation of liquid and solids make the Trelino the winner!

No power required for the Trelino is a huge differentiator, in my opinion. Combine that with a much much lower "cost per flush" (no proprietary bags required) then the Trelino is the clear winner.

My preference is a seven gallon plastic utility bucket with a Leaktite or Gamma Seal screw-on top. To use, I unscrew the top, add a kitchen garbage bag, and put a section of pool noodle or pipe insulation round the edge for comfort. And the bucket comes in handy for other stuff as well!
@kf8048

Excellent review! I went with the Trelino because the bags you can get anywhere (you mentioned you can even use grocery bags). With the Laveo, you have to purchase their proprietary cartridges, which can be an issue if you are traveling and you run out. That was the #1 con for me against it.

We have a Nature's Head in our trailer and I'm probably going to change to the Trelino. The Nature's Head is not easy to dump and clean. It's heavy to drag out, and a job to clean. The urine bottle is hard to clean as the hole is small but the Trelino's urine bottle has a big opening, you can put your hand it (with a glove :) and are able to scrub it.

None of them "compost". For the Trelino odor & absorption use pine nugget bedding from Tractor Supply. Cheap. Odor absorbing. A urine diverter insert can be bought for under $100. Two containers, some plywood and a toilet seat you're done for about $150. 👍
@robiny1823

I wish people would call them separation toilets rather than composting toilets, but I guess "composting" sounds more eco-friendly. We've used the pine bedding pellets for ages and it does a great job - definitely recommend!

It can compost if you use a biodegradable bag. Of course making something is cheaper than buying it from someone. That's obvious but people still eat out at restos anyway.

In my camper van I use an easier, low tech and inexpensive toilet solution. I line my barrel-with-lid hassock style portapotty with a plastic bag, add a cup or so of horse-stall grade pine pellets and get 1-3 days use camping solo. The pine pellets fluff up to sawdust which absorbs urine, with no odor at all. I sometimes add PooPowder as a supplement. There's no messy liquid to deal with. It's easy to dispose of the resulting non-toxic sawdust in any basic trash bin. The pine pellets are very inexpensive at about $6 for a 40 lb bag which lasts a long time. I divide the bag of pellets into smaller zip locks to tuck away in nooks and crannies around the van.

I love my Laveo. It's sturdy and I don't feel like I have to do a balancing act to use it. I have to use the bathroom at least once (sometimes twice) a night. I like using the powder that converts liquids into a gel. The product is also great at removing the smell. Then I flush in the morning. The replacement cartridges are expensive but in a pinch I'll use heavy duty bag liner and powder to convert liquids into a gel. I agree about the assessment about the mylar bags. It sounds great, but sometimes, you'll end up with a random tear or hole. Out of the 15 or so cartridges, I've only had one be bad/tear. The liner bag kept everything contained though. I highly recommend the Laveo. Even with the cost, I love this option the best. I hope they come up with a better environmental option though. All in all, great product! Thanks for the great video!

One way to conserve how much one uses w any toilet system is for men to use a 64 ounce Gatorade bottle when on the road. Need to pee in the night? Just have a bottle w the cap right next to you. I do this often when traveling.

Nice review. Based on my field experience (full timer), I find it absolutely essential to have a fully functioning compost toilet with a vent fan. I initially built a Trelino type set up (no vent fan), this severely limits its potential, the smell and inconvenience for one time usage bags gets super annoying. I see the potential of adding a vent fan to the Trelino and modifying it as a full blown compost toilet. On a side note, if the difference between a regular compost toilet like Nature's Head vs Trelino is only $200, I'd go with Nature's Head.

We have tried both the Dry Flush and the Trelino Evo in our van. Hands down the Trelino wins. The Dry Flush does work well, but its expensive and will only last about 1 week before you need to empty. I do disagree re re only using the Trelino for #2 emergencies. We use our Trelino full time for #1 and #2. No smells, no mess and super easy to empty. We can go about 2 weeks before we need to empty the solids. After each #2 use we throw in a handful of Mini Hemp Stalks (rabbit bedding). OH and when we changed to wet wipes rather than toilet paper it's a game changer. We put the wet wipes in a tiny small bin. Wet wipes allow the solids container to last a lot longer. Urine separating is the way to go. So much easier and cleaner than other toilet types.

We use a Trelino-like toilet. Composting is BS, btw, it's human waste. There's a reason farmers are not allowed to use human waste as a fertilizer whereas cow or even pig dung is ok. As long as you manage to dry the 💩, it has next to no smell. What we use is a bag of sawdust that we keep next to the toilet (I'm also a woodworker :-p ). The waste bag is 'primed' with a 1/2" layer of sawdust and the 'flush' is to sprinkle a layer of sawdust on top of the 💩. And it even works if you're a bit unwell and have a less-than-optimal consistency - you just use a little more sawdust than normal. We can go for a long time w/o emptying the waste bucket, and I am willing to bet it's even less offensive than what you have to deal with as it feels more or less a bag of sawdust and not a very soft hot dog in a large plastic bag :-)) . No odor whatsoever regardless of the temps. A million times better than the cassette toilet we used to have. We do have the vent hooked up to the toilet with a computer fan that runs all the time (Trelino has the same system IIRC), but I am not even sure that is completely necessary. We use composting plastic bags and as all we're tossing out is the bag, sawdust and poop, I don't think the environmental impact is even as large as with diapers. The main reason we switched from the cassette toilet was because of the smell and overall gross-out factor when dealing with a full cassette. Never going back. I am seriously considering going this route on our boat too as I am not fond of dealing with the tank and even less fond of the stink in the head when conditions combine to make the system operate less than 100%. The work involved in removing the holding tank is the main thing that's held me back till now.

As long as you don't leave the waste bag in, or pee bucket that hasn't been emptied or at least closed, when you leave your van you shouldn't have any problem even in a hot climate. There's an optional silicone plug for the pee bottle. I don't plug it tightly (it's narrow/long, like a graduated stopper), so I don't imagine it would be a problem. Without the plug, the built in silicone gasket is very pliable and would breathe well enough with altitude.

9:42 - Gotta love the Germans and their sense of humor. It is what it is. The poop bag concept is a very simple and novel idea. I mean we do it for our dogs when we walk them, no different for us other than we don't have to scoop it up. My only question is what are the tricks to adding a deodorizer in there. If say one has to really go, and you're still 75+ miles away from the nearest garbage can.

Holy OMG, Batman! Those are both just fancy versions of shitting in a bag in a 5-gallon bucket. And at prices that only someone who wants to status signal about their shits would want to buy them. 40 years ago, they used to make diaper disposal gizmos that worked exactly like that first monstrosity. But they never actually worked very well, so people just stopped buying them. Someone just repackaged that bad product and sold it to rich people who want to pretend that they are camping while also pretending that they are "vandwelling." That second one is literally nothing more than a square version of a 5-gallon bucket with a bag in the back and a funnel going into a detergent jug in the front. FYI: shitting in a bag is NOT a composting toilet. It's shitting in a bag. But for almost $400. I guess it's true what they say: A fool and their money are soon parted. And a status signaling fool, even sooner.

@@hmmm2564 Shitting in a bag in a $400 square bucket leaves you dealing with EXACTLY the came amount of human waste as shitting in a bag in a $5 5-gallon bucket. You are just status signaling about your shits while pretending that you throwing away $395 means you don't have to deal with your shits. If you are in any kind of vehicle, and not just always going to the bathroom at some business, or paying someone to empty your shit bags or black tank.... you WILL be dealing with human waste.

We have not. Incinerator toilets require a huge battery bank. Not really practical in a typical van build.

People are paying really serious money for pooping…. I pee in an old saucepan and poop in a carrier bag - one time use put it in the dog poo bin. And I’m an old lady… !😍 PS co-op carrier bags are best as they’re biodegradable.

Nope can’t empty nothing can’t bring myself too beat is dry flush and now there’s a new dry flush one that’s cheaper that uses bags not cartridges I’m going that route. And a foot pump system for my sinks and my shower I need easy as I’m disabled.

I don't understand the dry flush toilets. Putting your business in a mylar bag and throwing it away seems crazy wasteful...decadent really. And all of those cartridges...where do you store them? I would put these toilets at the bottom of the list.

It's great for convenience but expensive and risky in case it stops working or breaks down. Trelino should be at the top works likes manual version of the dry flush.

I would recommend that men just pee in a bottle. If you drink from a disposable bottle on a regular basis, just keep your empty bottle and fill it up with pee, then throw it out when it's full. Or even use a mens bedpan urinal.

the trelino is a total joke, who in their right mind would pay $500 for 1 small trash can, a 1.2 gallon jug, a plastic container to hold both of the aforementioned items and a toilet seat? legit these fools are high! wtf? i could build this for less than $40 and a trip to homedepot

Throw it away...where? Neither are going to work for me . I pee in a jug and crap in a bucket with a dump valve for a toilet or RV dump station. Throwing a bag of crap into a dumpster seems nearly as irresponsible as driving a fueled vehicle over 55-mph.

I own the Trelino. Not happy with it. It smells all the time even when empty. This plastic absorbs the smell and holds onto it. It’s probably great for a female for doing #1 but not so much for a male . I’m going back to my cassette. No smell until you open the blade after sitting down. I can deal with that, just turn exhaust fan on, but the trelino smells all the time.

@@TeutonicNordwind as I said the plastic absorbs the smell even after the bag has been tied and removed. Usually you can’t remove the bag immediately. @@davidlundy5007 And were you using a good compost material? This just flies in the face of every 99% of all the other "reviews" I've seen from people. Planning on getting one for a Promaster build we're preparing for. Maybe I''ll spray paint or polyurethane and seal the inside plastic and underside of lid before ever using as insurance to not allow plastic to absorb anything.

@@TeutonicNordwind I used pine wood chips. Spraying it with some sealer might work. IMO, the Trelino is just an expensive 5 gallon bucket for #2, but a woman would appreciate the #1 container. It’s actually very nice, but it’s not for me.
