Dry Ice Blasting in the car detailing world has exploded over the past few weeks. The irony is that this type of cleaning has been available for many years as a non-destructive method for safely cleaning surfaces in the industrial and commercial markets. Cleaning and detailing disaster cars and engines has been done before, but never with so much social media presence. I'm using a Cold Jet machine with a 375cfm compressor that was rented from Red-D-Arc tool rental in NJ.. This set-up is a bit more "industrial" and less precise due to its industrial design. In other words, my ignorance picked the wrong machine for this type of precise work, but it was super educational to go through the "growing pains" of my education. Nonetheless, the ice balster did a great job. The operator (me) needs more practice and most likely a smaller nozzle to get into all the nooks and crevices. What I have learned is that Dry Ice Detailing is "part" of the many services our industry can provide. It's an add-on similar to clear bra (PPF), window tinting, paintless dent removal (PDR), and coating applications. Next week we have an expert coming to the AMMO NYC Studio to teach me (us) everything we need to know about dry ice blasting vehicles and how to do it safely. Hope everyone enjoys! -Larry

Use a sort of tent to cover the whole car before the dry ice application and please do not swipe the dirt out by brush or compressed air. Use a vacuum cleaner or collect them from wet floor then into a specific container. Thnx for the great content.

I didn't even know ice blasting was a thing until now, it looks real cool. As far as the soot getting everywhere, two things: 1. You now have a reason to do a "Detailing My Shop" video, if desired. 2. Other people say drop down walls/curtains, but since the design of the studio might make that difficult, an easier solution could be using those plastic covers (like you used on the green Porsche to protect it from that one concept Baja) to form a tarp over the lifted car. Then you could tape the end facing the open garage door to an industrial fan to suck soot outside to make cleanup easier.

When dry ice blasting, consider isolating your car on a domed curtain so the rest of your amazing garage stays clean. Pre-wet all surrounding surfaces with soapy water to catch and flow those greasy solids down the drain. A down-draft paint booth type of setup might work well too.

I worked at a car parts manufacturer years ago, and they would contract out to have their machinery cleaned with dry ice. Loud as hell, but works. That said, there is a reason why any type of particle blasting is done in a cabinet, outside, or contained some how. With dry ice at least you don't have to worry about also cleaning up the particle's, as it simply evaporates. If you are going to pursue this, I highly recommend some sort of cordoned off area to contain the blowoff.

A quick note on detailing the car before selling it: as a buyer, when I see a car that has been cleaned (either the underside or the engine bay), my immediate thought is: the seller cleaned it to hide the leaks. I'd much rather see that the car is in the original dirty daily driving condition and there are no leaks or no major leaks (and when you do see some leaks you understand what you need to service after buying the car).

Larry, those ice machines are cool for removing rust, but a hotsy pressure washer will do better for removing grime. They use a kerosene heater in conjunction with a very high flow water pump and are absolutely incredible for cleaning. Heat loosens grime, just like with dishes. Keeps you from damaging metal as well, but it will scalp paint.

This is great. Saw it first via Matt @obsessedgarage but what I appreciate here is the sense of safety. All other videos mention Dry Ice as being some sort of magic process. Here you can clearly see you want to wear protection for your lungs, ears, and eyes that's for sure.

You must not have watched all Matt’s videos because it’s very clearly addressed in the extremely detailed videos

To keep the extra environment clean I think draping the perimeter of the car down to the floor with plastic would help contain the mess. Nice video!

I wonder if using a wood shop dust extractor and some plastic drapes could create a blasting tent to cut down on the mess. Super impressed by the results!

Saw a car restoration channel using the ice blaster to restore a supra iirc, really interesting to see more detailers get into it. Love learning about it. With all that dirt that gets around esp in your shop with multiple vehicles, i feel like you'd need a booth for it

Dry ice blasting is used for cleaning tools as well. The new 777x's vent stringers are cleaned with dry ice blasting as well.

I use one of those at work to blast our equipment clean. The static from blasting is insane, hope you’re grounding your parts, it F’ING HURTS getting shocked from the static.

Also it is really nice because it’ll turn grease or oil solid so you can sweep it up. Better sweep it or vacuum it while it’s solid.

The shop where I work uses what looks like a paint booth with supply fans on one end and exhaust fans on the other.

It’s actually the first time I’ve ever seen him participate in anything ‘trendy’ or ‘mainstream’ in the detailing world. To this day I have never heard Larry utter the words ‘ceramic coat’.

@@Nick210 He's on the coating bandwagon along with everyone else whether he uses the same lingo or not.
