Nice end results. 👍 Not sure about blue rocks however. Weathering usually means that they are more brown depending on the geological make up and where in the world you are. In the Australian desert, shades of red/brown are more realistic for example. We all develop techniques that work best for ourselves. There is no wrong or right, just various degrees of the same process. First coat, mostly wet, total coverage. Second coat, mostly dry covering of mostly highlights leaving deep recesses dark. Third Coat is what I call Super Dry and covers highlights only. This process works for me with cheap stiff brushes that can be replaced as required. The KISS approach works for me. Keep It Simple Stupid. I must be Stupid as this is an effective work flow that I follow. 😀👍

Pro tip: take the brown basecoat further. Completely cover the rocks with it, and take it onto the crashed AT-ST a little, too. That way when you drybrush the gray overtop you get built in dirt at basically no extra effort cost. Real rocks don't look like a perfect gradient of grey, they look really dirty in the cracks - even on the areas relatively far from where they interface with the ground. Plus, this is an easy way to differentiate them from the vehicle gray without actually using any other colors of paint.

Marvelous video! I’m not a table topper but a model railroder and a friend of realistic landscape and buildings. Drybrushing isn’t a big theme there but I love to have a look over the edge and found here the solution for my everlasting problem: realistic colouring of a 1:87 brick wall. Now I tried it again with the techniques I found in this video - and got for the first time a brick wall that amazes me! Thank you very much for showing the basics and secrets of paintbrushing, also for the theory at the whiteboard. That helped a lot for understanding the dependencies of the factors. Rainy greetings from good ol Germany Thomas

Nice work mate, I've been using your brushes for 6 months now and love them. The videos are great as well. Thanks! I bought the Drybrushes on a whim as I don't tend to drybrush much but I can't stress enough how much better these are for drybrushing than just the "standard manky old square" brush that I see others recommend using. They are one of those special things to have in your toolbox that make things quicker AND higher quality. The good ol' win win.

@@ArtisOpus The Large Series D does 80% of the work and the Small Series D does the other 20% of my drybrushing. I tend to start with an airbursh, then to drybrushing with the AO drybrushes and then detail and washing work with AO Series S brushes. I moved away from the traditional brush suppliers because half the time they arrived splayed, which is a pain having to send them back for replacement. I've had 10 of your brushes without any issue, so they are highly recommended by me! The only set I haven't tried yet are Series M. I think the benefit of hitting your ground that close to the object you're painting is to give an authentic vision of what's coming out of the ground. If your rocks are perfectly coloured without even an influence of ground on them or pebbles from the rocks on the grounds in the way your dry brush touched... It looks fake. I don't mind seeing one colour getting onto the other because in real life that's how it works. Great video!

Love it! Thanks a bunch for all your videos. Gotta be my favourite painting channel to watch and learn from. Always well explained and filmed excellently! I purchased some dirty down rust to use for the weapons on some nighthaunt stuff I'm working on and ran into a snag / issue which you may or may not know about! Kind of obvious really in hindsight - It recommends sealing with a varnish before painting over it to prevent it being reactivated... what it doesn't mention is that doing this ALSO reactivates it before setting! I was quite happy with the placement of pigments etc and went in with some Citadel Stormshield to protect it so I could do an edge highlight on some scythes. In doing so it moved my patches around and even streaked with the brushstrokes I was using and ruined to look somewhat :/ managed to move it around whilst the varnish was wet to where I liked it again, but it was more unplanned work. Heads up!

I had to learn to focus on individual models or very small batches switching between models often to make sure I kept good transitions between colours (ultramarines in this case) otherwise it can be easy to loose the blend, particularly on flat untextured sections (looking at you, shoulder pads!). definitely going to have to give something like this a go, as it is I am heavily biased towards the airbrush, so now that you have out out such a comprehensive guide I think i might just challenge myself to paint something completely with the drybrush technique, start to finish, and see what I come out with! It will be interesting to see the differences against a model painted largely with the airbrush and a drybrushed example once I have slapped a crap ton of weathering techniques over the top! (weathering is literally the only point I would beg to differ with you on this one, I'm personally not a fan of drybrushed dust effects, nothing does dust, streaking, and splash effects as well as humbrol enamels!)

Looks amazing and its so accesible to be able to do yourself its mind blowing. I have been struggling when getting into this hobby because I am not the greatest when it comes to painting and the way my head works is finding a system that can work across most of the minis i paint. I like the building them up and getting them ready but as soon as i go to put paint on them i am lost so this really helped to show that it can be simple. I would personally love to see you do a start collecting box or something along those lines where there is a large variety of models and there is a scheme for the army because i feel this would help people like me tackle a large amount of models in one or a few sittings. Loving the vids and may be investing in those nice brushes soon cos they look really nice to use.

Amazing as always Byron. I would love to see another video of finishing it with battle damage, rust, corrosion etc but to be fair it already looks like an amazing piece where you left it. I'd love to see more Star Wars Legion models on the channel though. There's some amazing models in their range and they don't seem to get covered often.

HUgely appreciated again, Patrick! We've been asked this a lot. We also really enjoyed the SW model, especially the plastics and we'd love to return to them in the future! 😊

Hi Byron, what eludes me a bit is the visual difference between regular dry brushing and the technique you advocate with the dampening pad. Did you already visually show the actual difference between regular dry brushing and the semi-moist dry brushing achieves in some other video? Just wondering.

No idea how we missed this man, sorry! We haven't done a 'side by side', but it's just the same as thinning layering/not thinning layering basically, all the same principles for all the same reasons :)

Been using the damp brush method for a few years but not to this level. I get a lot of people with a negative attitude to dry brushing, way I see it is its another tool in the arsenal and a valid one at that. I just ordered the Artis Opus series D set from Element Games, they are waiting on stock but hopeful I don't have too long to wait. Really enjoying the videos. Been on a year long hobby burnout but got back to it about a month back and have the bug back bad! Would love you guys to do more techniques such as loaded brush wet blending glazing etc Thanks for the videos. Subbed and liked.

@@ArtisOpus Received my Series D brush set today! I am very impressed with the quality of the set! Beautiful! Just used the small brush and dampening pad on a Chaos Cultist's robes and I am blown away with the smoothness of the finish, okay its not buttery smooth like a wet blend but it took seconds and its on a mini who is supposed to look a bit ... used? Thanks for the videos and for providing to us lovely brushes and equipment to further our enjoyment of this amazing hobby!

We've cut far less than we would do normally dude, so there's a lot of content in this one about during-process cleaning (incidental cleaning during painting) especially, I hope it's useful! Loads on how I negotiate switching between colours, too, as I jump back and forward between brown and grey on the base a lot, and use the same brush for a lot of it :)

It actually happens in the center, I wish I could post a picture. It's almost like I'm pressing to hard so it removes the paint from that area, but I tried another model with no pressure really and the same thing. Mostly wheb stippling. I am not using your brushes, though I'm not 100% why it would happen with the ones im using and wouldn't with yours. Wanted to practice with some others before I bought nice ones, brand new to painting!

Byron. Hope you don’t mind a few more questions? I use metallic paints for shading/highlighting/edge highlighting (Iron hands black armour) progressing from Iron warriors through leadbelcher to iron hands steel and spot highlights with stormhost silver. How do the dry brushes handle such loads of metallic paints? Any tip on intermediate cleaning (other than as per the video) and/or brush technique and any tips on impact on moisture pad (and its cleaning)? Thanks.
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 3 года назад
Hey dude, you're going to enjoy our next video! The brushes handle it fine, and you can get amazing resutls with metallics, they're very forgiving for multiple stages, and don't 'cake' nearly as much as non-metallics. I would genuinely consider getting the silver I use (Vallejo Game Air Silver) because it is the bomb, and is incredibly effective, you can just add black to make it darker, it mixes nicely too - have a play with it! Cleaning as you go - another thing you can do is put a piece of paper over the edge of your texture pallet, and flick your brush back and forth on the edge, you'd be surprised how much paint you can coax off :) you can also just do this on the edge, with no paper. Moisture pad: Let it dry fully between sessions (lid off) You can always turn it over for metallics/a 'clean side'
