Excellent explanation, well done. Just rebuilt the vacuum petcock on my old XJ600, it’s almost identical to the one on the DRZ. I’ll probably get a standard petcock when I pick up a DRZ.
Those 80s petcocks wrecked my life so many times as I knew nothing about how to use them correctly. I ended up going "modern" with fuel injection. Never knew bikes could pee themselves, after half of dozen times (all my fault) & 1800 bucks later I sold them. Thank you for the vlog, GREAT topic, nice Link! p.s. nice job keeping it rated PG
Great informative vid as usual Scott. I must be lucky my 16 yr old petcock(which I check regularly by running the fuel line which goes to the carb into a jug for a couple of nights) does not leak a drop although I know that could change at any time.I do have on the shelf a DRZ400E petcock which gives you the same reserve as the stock one and will get round to fitting it at some point. Ride safe from the UK Martin
Glad to hear it. Sometimes they last forever. Sometimes they leak within a year. It’s a crap shoot really. Thanks for watching Martin. Have a great weekend!
Solid intel explained perfectly and delivered brilliantly. As you were explaining the fuel line routing and the choke interference issue I was noticing the fuel line clamps ,are those mini ty wraps ? They look slick and clean ,traditional clamps are bulky and awkward looking compared to what ever you are using. What's your secret?
Yes sir! Those are zip ties. I always do that for extra security. Just to prevent hoses from popping off unexpectedly. I buy a bunch of different colors and tie them all off. There’s a shit ton of them on all those hoses on the banshee bike. Thanks for watching I appreciate it!
Nice job! Yeah, you're probably right, on assuming that they designed it like that to prevent gas from spilling out, in the event of an accident. (Even though, it's only a 2 - 1/2 gallon tank) safety features, like putting the squeeze bar on the handle of these newest pushmowers. Ridiculous... My old 1950 Massy Ferguson 135', just has the old standard petcock.. you have to remember to shut it OFF. Just like remembering to park it in gear, and set the brake.. really difficult '. 😅. Now, for best performance and piece of mind, we have to go in and remove all that shit! Put it back the way that they used to be.
I know you're busy now with the GSXR, but i'd love you to do the Free Power Mod on the DRZ, no one else explains or shows things as clearly as your videos do!
Great Video , where can I get the garburator vacuum plug and is there a part # for that blue plug ? My DRZ is making a lot of back fire when I shut off the tootle , maybe it is cause by the bike running lean since I did not plug the vacuum hose .
Damnit man! Sorry to hear that. You could drain it all, fill it full of oil run it for a few minutes and then drain it all again and then refill one last time. That should get rid of any traces of fuel that might have got in bearing surfaces etc. good luck! And thanks for watching.
Where did you buy your gas line and filter from a auto parts store or did you order it from Amazon or what I saw a filter like you have on the Amazon I think maybe a K&N Filter are tusk filters I like that fuel line too it looks good on your bike and it'll look good on mine if I can find out where you got it
I couldn’t run my gas line the way that you did, it got crinkled up right off of the petcock. Same petcock and fuel line. I ended up having to go across the carb and back to get it to connect without crinkling up. Hopefully this doesn’t cause an issue.
the drawback of less reserve fuel on the standard petcock, easily remedied by laying the 300 lb. bike on it's tank petcock side to refill the carb...got me out of trouble a couple of times or more with the oem petcock.
Hey Link, at around the 8:25 mark on the video you can see the lines on the petcock going to the carb. It’s seems like you have a little fuel filter in the line. Is that a fuel filter? And if it is which one? Also do you think it’s a necessary “mod” for the DRZ400SM that helps protect the engine/carb/jets? It’s my only form of transportation and I wanna protect my baby the best I can
Yes. It is a fuel filter. It’s super cheap insurance and peace of mind. Here’s the link. 💪🏼. K&N 81-0221 Sintered Porous... www.amazon.com/dp/B000E2AR70?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
So we’re forced to delete the pair valve by getting a standard petcock right ? Just making just I understood correctly at the end you put a blue plug on the carb that went to the pair valve / carb ?
If you want to keep the pair valve, you can just cap or plug the line that goes to the petcock and keep the lines that go to the carb/ pair valve. But I just got rid of it all.
Isn't using the original vacuum operated petcock on prime mode the same as using your new petcock in the on position? Just curious about what the benefit is here. For the petcock that you are suggesting, You will need to turn your petcock off after each ride right?
Valid question and the answer is yes. if you replace with a non-vacuum shut off, they you must shut it off ever time or a leaking needle valve seat in the carb will flood the engine. If the petcock vacuum switch fails just run it on PRI to get it home then replace it with the same type. That vacuum switch is there for a reason.
Hey man, first of all, thank you for that video. It helped me understand a lot of things as a beginner rider. Second, I have the stock petcock paired with the keihin fcr39 carb. My bike won’t run when the petcock is at the ON position and will stall on idle at the PRI position. From your video, I can understand that it has something to do with the vaccum of the petcock since there isnt any hose or vaccum block on the vaccum port. My question is, while I wait to buy a ON/OFF/RES petcock, what can I do to make my bike rideable? Block the vaccum port of the stock petcock? Thanks mate!
First of all, thanks for watching! I wrote an entire comment about the PRI position because I didn’t read that in your comment. Unfortunately, blocking off the vacuum port at the petcock won’t work. Because there is a diaphragm inside that works in vacuum and won’t let the fuel flow if there isnt any. I think you’re stuck until you get a standard petcock. You could maybe take the vacuum petcock apart and remove diaphragm inside if it’s like an emergency and you have to get home. But I really wouldn’t recommend it. My recommendation is to not ride it until you get the right petcock man.
@@linksgarage1985alright thanks, I just bought the 1pz petcock. I was wondering what fuel line kit you bought to replace the oem one? What diameter? On amazon, it only shows the exterior diameter of the output nipple in mm and the fuel line options from 1pz are either 1/4” or 3/8”
Awesome videos man. When your replacing the petcock, do you need to remove the gas tank? I imagine as soon as you unscrew the OEM one, gas will flow out everywhere all over the engine. Curious as to how you replaced it. Thanks man
Yes. I have many videos showing that process. I keep the plastic fairings attached, and remove the whole thing as an assembly. And I flip the tank upside down on a 5 gallon bucket. Don’t lose any fuel either if your gas cap is good.
@@linksgarage1985 Awesome, thanks man! I’ve watched almost every one of your vids on the DRZ-I have an S and have learned a lot. Also love the latest ride along vid
Do you shut the petcock off each time you park the bike? My understanding is if the float valve sticks and the petcock is left in the on position when you park the bike, gas will flood the cylinder. Remembering to turn it off and back on would seem to be the only drawback. That and the reduced reserve range. Switch to a standard petcock and removing the PAIR valve gets rid of all those vacuum lines and fittings which is nice.
I do shut fuel off every time. But I’ve been doing that on my dirt bikes for 25 years. So it’s standard operation for me. And your understanding of the fuel/ float sticking, is spot on.
Man I've got a question. I've got a 2014 drz400sm. I put the lower links on but I can't get the front to lower. I loosened the 8 bolts but it's not budging. What am I doing wrong.
This is great info. Why did you change yours? Was it leaking? I recently developed a issue with my 2021 SM where my choke dosent work. Can only start the bike and keep it running by giving it throttle. It idles by itself withthe choke off once warm. I wonder if the peacock vacuum could be related.
I showed the part number. But yea. I could do better at that. This is it 1PZ SL1-P01 Upgraded Fuel Gas... www.amazon.com/dp/B08DNN4J7B?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

You have to use the spacer. But yes. This petcock by design has a smaller reserve. The overall fuel mileage per tank won’t change. You can just go longer before you hit reserve. And once reserve is engaged, it’s a shorter distance.
The gas in the oil problem is because of a leaking needle/float problem in the carb not the Petcock. Without a vacuum valve how does a manual petcock prevent this issue?
You are correct about the needle/ float. The manual petcock is more to prevent the potential of a diaphragm tear or failure. Preventing you from getting fuel. If the needle / float in the carb is bad, either petcock will have gas in the oil.
Yes, manual petcock needs to be shut off when engine is shut off....needles can be over powered from gravity, and hence gas leak....seen it happened on many older motorcycles and my neighbors Old goldwing had a manual petcock for some stupid reason.
@@linksgarage1985 nah it’s the exact one - I kinda got it working now I see you took the TPS off to get it working and used a smaller fuel gauge than I was using. Gonna edit my original comment in a few.
@@WhosJohnyea. The tps was previously deleted. That may cause some interference. But it should work. Been running this set up, and I’m running factory Mikuni carb also.
Swapped the carb a few weeks ago. For some reason it didn’t want to give me top end. Like 75mph was all it wanted. Tried every jet combo. Have tons of bottom end power and snap. Just lost it up top. Put the factory carb in, and smacked 104mph. I guess if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. A he one FCR would probably do the trick.
Hey, it's been like 8 years, since I rode motorcycles. Just picked up a 2023 Drz400sm and I've been having issues, where starting it up, it takes forever and I have to hold the ignition button, while it does, which makes me feel like, I'm gonna burn out my starter. Am I not setting the petcock right? Should I put it on prime, when I park it? I had 80's bike's, so I used to always shut the fuel off. I just filled it, for the first time, since the dealership and I used premium, just because I feel like, it'll make it run, smoother. Edit: I'm retarded. I forgot about the choke. Talk about, being a beginner, all over, again.
And do not put it on prime. Keep it on “On” prime lets the fuel flow all the time. Keep it on the on position. It’ll only pull fuel while it’s running because it’s vacuum operated. Congrats on the new bike, and welcome back to motorcycling!
@@GotusTotus yes. If you are leaving pair valve hooked up, you’ll need to cap that end also. One cap on carb, one cap on ole plastic piece that goes to pair valve.
@@linksgarage1985 so where the hose goes from the pair valve to the carb and tank, I disconnected the plastic nozzle that has 2 connectors. Then I plugged it with a screw. Is that okay or should I just disconnect the entire hose and plug it straight on the pair valve? Sorry for being slow. Just bought a 2024 and really don’t want to screw it up. I assume plugging it straight at the valve would eliminate the need to keep that mess of hoses on the bike
@@GotusTotus all good man. This may help. But you are correct. You can get rid of all the hoses, cap it on the carb, and cap the hard pipe for the pair valve and you’ll be good. Check it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-csx5GS5UHAA.htmlsi=KmMT5PVuSANJskJ1
I personally hate manual petcocks....you have to Remember to switch them On and Off, or get gas in your oil, cause Needles aren't really designed to withstand the pressure with the bike off. I guess for off-roading applications, simple is better, but for riding on the street in 15 years I've never had a vacuum petcock leave me stranded! But I also maintain my shit and make sure to visually inspect things often....if I have doubts, I rebuild or replace. But thanks for the informative video.
You’re welcome! And for me, been riding dirt bikes for 25 years. So I’m used to flipping the switch. It’s automatic for me to turn the fuel on or off. Just like putting down the kick stand. To each their own. Appreciate you watching!
Hey would my DRZ cut off 10min into a highway ride due to a leaking petcock? My DRZ would run for about 10min on the highway then shut off. It would take a couple tries to start up again but it would start then cut off again after 10min. I noticed the petcock was leaking I hope this fix solves my problem. Thank you!
You could check it by switching it to PRI while you ride. It’ll get constant fuel that way. If you are on “ON” and it shuts off, it might be a vacuum issue. Something not capped off right. Just try the PRI mode and see if it changes anything.
