The top does has an o-ring above the bearing so it is actually sealed. The grommet around the wire does compress when the unit is screwed together and makes a water proof seal to at least 12 inches. I have totally submersed mine in a bucket of water so it was at a depth of 12" ( which is more than deep enough to be considered underwater) , operated it and them pulled it apart and no water was found inside. The digital servo claim isn't false as the motor is PWM controlled which is a legitimate form of digital signal. The "digital servo" the author refers to is in the position feedback circuitry which will give a different feel to the drive. It must be considered that this is a 20 buck servo so don't expect it to act as a 100 buck unit.

Well all I can say is here we have quite a few on crawlers, I have 2 of them and they spend a lot of time in and under water with no failures yet. At the price you can buy 2 to 3 of these for the price of the name brands, when they fail replace them. I like them so far, much better than the TRX 4 stock servo.

I have one of these that's 270°. Was wondering if would be ok to use for steering in a traxxas slash. I didn't realize it was 270° when I ordered it.

I'm using one on my TRX4 and consider it a huge improvement over stock. That said it is what it is , a $17 servo. I'm about to upgrade the ones on my Typhon 6s and Granite 3s and don't think these are the ones I'll be using. The JX Ecoboost is what I'm leaning towards now. Thanks 😊

For what it is it's a decent servo. My complaint is that it isn't what it purports to be. I checked out a jx servo (video coming) and wasn't super impressed there either. Better than this but they aren't really water proof either and their qc leaves something to be desired.

Yeah it’s $20 or less!! Back in my younger days it would cost you $80-120 for a good mg steering servo, quit your whining! I have one of these in my trx4 and it’s just fine! I know a $400 kit and replaced the steering servo with one that’s $20, if it quits then I’m getting the ds servo that’s 35KG for …….$20! It will take a long time to be tired of $20 servos going out before I spend $80 for a “good” servo. Now the real, bad part of this servo is with stock voltage from your esc it’s a bit, just a bit week. It does get tired if you’re really in the rocks with an eight pound crawler, otherwise it’s a great value!!! I’m only planning on the 35KG servo when/if this one goes out. Side note,,,,, I just spent $20 for breakfast this morning for just me!!

Great review keep them coming. Interesting to see inside, all the trailing wires is no no for aircraft servo. Vibration will loosen and break the connection, crashed model! So many of these cheap Chinese servos made to poor standard like this.Totally different ball game inside Futaba. I have noticed a lot of the so called "digital" servos are lacking the characteristic whining noise. Perhaps an observation that needs further investigation?

Often you don't need oscilloscope at all. Just check IC markings and google for datasheet. I have some Chinese MG996R knock offs, bot says "digital" one has KC2462 and another one has AA51880. Both dedicated servo ICs. True digital servo should have microcontroller inside.
@DoRC
@DoRC Месяц назад
I was able to find the data sheet for the kc2462 and it does appear to have a 20 millisecond polling rate so that's definitely analog. I'm not sure digital servos would require a separate microcontroller though. I was able to find multiple dedicated servo ICs that have a high enough pulling rate to easily be considered digital.
@NicolaiLab
@NicolaiLab Месяц назад
@@DoRCpooling rate isn't a thing that defines digital servo or not. Digital servo should have digital processing which mean microcontroller. And it allows to use more advanced logic like PID control.
@DoRC
@DoRC Месяц назад
@@NicolaiLab That's actually not true. Even a so-called analog servo is still technically digitally controlled. The analog / digital terminology is actually kind of a misnomer. What defines one from the other is generally the rate at which it actually sends signals to the motor to change position. The older ones did it around every 20 milliseconds and the newer call digital ones are around 10 times that fast. The other features tend to be on newer servos which are also considered fast enough to be digital but they don't define one from the other at least not in any of the places I can find where it is defined. A very long time ago there were genuinely analog servos but everything is technically been digitally controlled through PWM for a long time. Of course you could also argue that anything That is getting its positional data from a potentiometer or hall effect sensor is analog which basically also servos are so the definitions are kind of muddy.

weird. I just got one, hook it up and it wasn't responding with the radio. Also it was getting stuck on either end of the 180 degree. I am gonna have to compare it to my traxxas. the other thought I have is that maybe is not 100% compatible with traxxas.

It seems that some people have no issues with tsm while others like myself do. I'm not sure why it's inconsistent. The manufacturer may be using different boards internally at different times.

After watching numerous tests of these servos and all of their iterations my observations are it doesn't have anywhere near the torque claimed and it probably is not digital. Imho the Powerhd lf 20 is far superior and is the same price.

Measuring the output of the motor is not a right way to test if it's a digital or analog. The output of the motor should be around 15~20khz due to the internal PID feedback control in the servo controller board. Analog servos operate based on voltage signals that come through the pulse width modulation (PWM). When an analog servo is at rest, the PWM is essentially off unless you transmit some action. Producing torque from the resting mode makes the initial reaction time sluggish. This delay in torque isn’t ideal for advanced applications. The PWM frequency is around 60hz for analog. Digital servos use a small microprocessor to receive and direct action at high frequency voltage pulses. The digital servo sends nearly six times the amount of pulses an analog signal does. These faster pulses provide consistent torque for quicker and smoother response times. It’s important to note the faster pulses require more power emission from the motor. The PWM frequency is around 330hz for digital.

Very interesting. I knew most of that but I didn't know why I was seeing what I was at the motor. Thanks!
