Nice work as always! Glad you talked about the issues with using stereo mics for dialogue--a mistake that many of us made when we first got our Zoom/Tascam recorders!

Audio tip: you can use an external audio recorder and have the headphone jack output go into your Dslr. The trick is to have the in camera gain on manual and all the way down then plus one. This will elimate most of the audio noise caused by the bad in camera preamp. This will save time in post production

Whether a tutorial or review, you make the most informative videos for both professional and amateur DSLR filmmakers that there are, anywhere- Do keep it up! I should say there are numerous freeware/open-source/"freemium" video editors (especially needed when working with audio) available, that one need not pay a premium to have a decent editor. (One such editor is a commercial editor called Lightworks, which has been around for almost 25 years, whose basic edition is available for free downl

Nearly bought the Rode stereo mike after your other review. But after some research went with the Tascam DR100mkII recorder and the increase in audio quality is amazing, you can hear it on my latest truck video. Will prob ad a boomed Rode NTG mike for interview stuff later.

Is there a way to SIMULTANEOUSLY record sound from two sources, one "talent" and the other from wherever the mic is pointing and that "set up" TO RECORD ONLY WHEN I PUsH THE RECORD BUTTON OF THE CAMERA? That way the sync of the sound of these two sources, would be so much easier... hope it makes sense what I am saying here...

Thank you for this video. I have been upset with my shotgun mic going into my T3i. I always have a lot of hiss even though I think the mic is pretty good but never really knew. I thought it might be the mic but I think the hiss I get must be from the camera. So apparently I need an external recorder. Is that your professional opinion?
@PostColorGear

Great video gentlemen. With the brand new Adobe Premiere CC syncing audio is post is even easier, so as you said, unless youre shooting run and gun documentary work, syncing in post is the best way to go. Well explained and presented. Lavs are amazing and the best way to go....it's just a matter of hiding them :)

I know this is an older video but why would you not run the line out / headphone jack from the DR-40 to your camera mic jack instead of syncing in post? I know that SOMETIMES/OFTEN that's not possible like when you are shooting a short film and you have the recorder on the boom ops belt but shooting news or documentary or ... I'm shooting a live performance music video (one artist, not a whole band) in some ruins in a forest next week end using the Tascam DR-40. I'll have the acoustic guitar hooked up to the DR-40 (the guitar has a pre-amp), a shotgun or lav (will test on location) for vocals and then the DR-40's two mics grabbing a bit more of the ambient and I'll have the audio going to my 5DMk2 from the line out. I'll probably still mix everything in post anyways since this is a music video (and I'm shooting multi cam and I might get some "room tone" like the small stream and wind in the trees to add back in to insure it doesn't sound like it was shot in a studio ... hurray for multi track recorders) but my reference sound will be much better I think and should stay in synch (no time slip).

in the sequence starting at 3:30, are you using HDR video? it looks like there is a characteristic hallo around the border of the river. (or maybe it is a different artifact because of the compression or grading). thanks

Hi !! I record video in church service and the audio is not good at all, so what is thought is to get feed from mixer/ pa system from aux cable and get it to my dslr or camcorder. will that give me a proper result??? is this a proper/ correct way?? I was about to buy 10m long male-male AUX cable. I need some suggestion??
@harpreet1805
@harpreet1805 8 лет назад
+Jorgie Mathew : I would rather setup my own system if you are going through PA system. Coz in case microphone is off then you loose the volume. This happened to me. I would rather put my own system. in my personal option recording the sound separately a good idea (obviously pain) coz its a dedicated system which does job well and will never fail.

I make short films & can i use an external digital audio recorder without a directional mic plugged into it & get professional audio ?
@EricLefebvrePhotography
@EricLefebvrePhotography 8 лет назад
It will be difficult to get clean audio if your recorder has an A-B pattern mic setup. Many of the cheap recorders like dictation recorders have a mic array set to capture wide areas so you'll end up getting all the ambient noise. If you are in a quiet environment it might work but in the forest or in a park you'll hear everyone yelling, cars passing by, the wind rushing through the leaves, the river rushing ... If your recorder has a X-Y pattern it will be a lot more directional. Some recorders like the higher end zooms and Tascams can switch the mic pattern. There are ok'ish microphones available for pretty cheap. Audio Technica has a cheap 60$-70$ shotgun the ATR-6550. It doesn't compare to a nice RODE NTG but for 60-70$ (actually, just checked, price went up here in Canada to 90$ since I last bought it). I quite like it. It needs a bit of post processing love but it is still much better than the onboard mic. Pyle does some cheaper shotguns as well that are apparently fairly decent.

how to capture a bunch of people on screen audio?
@tmfilmproductionshd7470
@tmfilmproductionshd7470 10 лет назад
Question; I'm trying to figure out whether I should use an external mic with input to my D5200 or an external recorder and put it on the shoe mount. But the problem with both, is that I'm wondering whether either one of the two will pick up speaking sounds from more than a meter distance. What I'm talking about is whether I can get the great audio of a voice at the same time when filming the speaking subject with good bokeh (blurred background) for which you should take distance and zoom in to get. This is mainly for short (action) films. So which one should I get? I don't think I can afford more than 1 mic.
@Emkayu

A boom mic might be helpful for your situation, unless you can hide a lavalier mic and cable on your actors
