Notice that Phil doesn't just refer to himself as an outsider. Initially he describes his position as above and outside. I don't think this is accidental. He truly wants to believe that he holds some moral high ground. In his world view there is a distinct hierarchy and clearly he resides at the pinnacle.

I worked at Walmart for 7 years. While it is true the pay sucks, I dare you to show me a retail store that pays their employees well. They don't just fire you for no reason. They don't just go to a door greeter and say "oh you're fired, we don't need you anymore." In fact, the ONLY people I've seen get fired are people caught stealing, and most of them are also prosecuted. As long as you do the bare minimum, it's almost impossible to get fired. The bare minimum is coming to work on time and don't steal.

I had a roommate in the Army that me and my best friend (also in the Army) would play pranks on. He would go to such extraordinary lengths to act like it didn't bother him that it made it more tempting to play more pranks. And that's DSPs relationship with the internet summed up. To be clear the guy we played pranks on was a bit odd but we were all friends at the end of the day. Unlike DSP he would find the humor in the pranks, albeit well after the fact.

Okay its been bothering me on the whole Phil and Wal-mart to the point I had to make some phone calls as it wasn't adding up. Phil was running ECC back in 08 when sf4 came out Wal-mart did not offer online order and instore pickup till 2011.
