Best video. You have done such a grt job explaining that I feel like I know so much about cars. Now I'll brag to my friends about it. Thanks a million.
Great work Mike in demonstrating a step-by-step process in tracking down the fault. Who would ever thought that you had multiple issues creating that code 😊 Have a good one Mike and be safe!
Nice job explaining the process Mike. As you already know, having more than one issue can be a frustrating task to trouble shoot. Helga will be pleased with your work buddy.
Awesome. Thank you for doing a thorough explanation and run through all the possible causes. Its the most useful video I have come across on this error for the Trax.
Nice detail video. Wow 2 problems causing one code. I like it when the purge valve removed itself and was ready for the new one. I wish the parts would remove themselves from my vehicles when putting in new parts.
What a great job, best I've after viewed, I'm heading out to the barn to work on my daughters 2015 Traxs with much more confidence. PS whats your home address and is the house next door to ya for sale "neighbor" 😁 Yooper Jim
Dude Thank you so much. I have never worked on anything over a 2000 and My mother's 2015 Trax LT has been giving her this code. I just found the PVC Valve you pointed out is sucking more air than I have ever heard before. This blasted car is like a total Alien Anatomy to me, you helped a ton.
@@TheDisgruntledMechanic Yea I guess I did. Unfortunately, that little bit in the Intake is missing too, so Looks like a new valve cover and Intake Manifold for this thing. IS it me or is the design really kind of stupid? But it still beats the heck out of her previous chevy Cobalt's rear drum brake design. That large W-shaped spring was a total nightmare to get into place. The sad thing though is when she took it to Autozone to get the code read they were trying to sell her Fuel Injectors.
great work, I am looking at getting a chevy trax, and the cel is on in that vehicle, dont know what code it is yet, but at least now I know what to look for if it is a p0171. Love the outro, I myself am a mechanic, did 3 years college for automotive, been wrenching for about 27 years, and completely relate to broken bolts, also my name is Mike as well, lol
That's an eye opening case story, with two problems. I would have thought it would have thrown an evap code with a constantly open purge valve, but evidently not.
Nope no evap code. maybe because it was only slighty open and proceeded to get worse. Thanks for watching! It makes me wonder if I had taken it back to the dealership if they would have just fixed 1 problem under warranty and shipped it.
Hey Mike, great job! Which was the reading of the maf sensor before and after fixing it? Would have been nice to realise how the low maf reading shortens timing injection and generates that wrong fuel trim. Does foxwell provide that live data? Thanks!!
Hey Mike how is it going in today’s crazy world? Good video thanks for sharing. Finally received my set of 3/8 stubby sockets and ratcheting wrench I ordered awhile back. Amazon and the postal service screwed the whole order up. The 1/2 socket set arrived no problem but the rest of the order was destroyed in shipping. Hope all is well and stay safe. How is that Foxwell scanner? Was thinking of getting one with the Honda software installed in it. Thanks buddy 😊🇺🇸
Hey Mike how you doing ? Was checking out one of your other video's , buick century odometer or PRNDL problem . Noticed you had on a Reading royals sweat shirt . You from Reading ?
@@TheDisgruntledMechanic I live in reading . I also have gone to see the royals way back when , cheaper then going to philly to see the flyers . You near knobles theme park ?
Does the failure of the purge valve always affect the fuel trims? If so, do you need a special scan tool to reset them, and how do you find out what the fuel trims are for a specific vehicle?
I like it but I would buy a launch if I were buying new (link below). It came with 2 years free updates when I bought it. I think updates after that are like $600. amzn.to/3dCr97V
I was having problems and he offered to come help me. My girlfriends family has known him and used him as a mechanic in his pre youtube days. So we have hung out many times.
hey mike! you would think it would be that vc pcv.... i would think you had a evap code for constant purge, i dont know... i never fixed a maf by cleaning but you did!
I have a 2020 Trax with 64K on it. The last two months I have put in a new o2 sensor and just this weekend had to replace the MAF sensor. Today my check engine light is back on for some unknown reason and i can't find my code reader. How many more sensors could be going bad that are causing these problems?
Can you check for vacuum leak without removing the electrical connection of the purge valve? Is that the only way? Will it throw off the computer? Thank you
My mechanic is never able to fix P0171 and P0172 problem. I checked obd2 myself. It is showing Short Term Fuel Trim Bank1 value -30%(I am curious why its negative). MAP at idle is showing 32 kPa. O2S2 B1 showing almost constant voltage (0.7v). OS2B1 shows fuel trim 0%. What could he possible problem with my car?
For a great explanation on the long term and short term fuel trim check out BigDogg50001 video here ----ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SugtR4KMIDU.html
I watched another video a couple days ago with same problem don't remember who it was. It turned out, the pcv was bad, and the valve cover had to be replaced because of it being built into it. Are you flipping cars now? LOL
No flipping. Yeah I lucked out I really didn't want to have to replace the cover but probably will have to in the near future with the failure rate of the PCV!
just got this code on my 2015 chevy trash. This car has been a nightmare around 100k miles. This is junk, and I going to trade it in for a Toyota, and this engine light popped up with that code.
@@TheDisgruntledMechanic already fixed the water pump early this year. radiator too, it cracked a few years ago. Oh I have a long list of issues with this car.
@@TheDisgruntledMechanic in the Seattle area. It will be traded in 2 weeks for 6k. a cross country drive will kill the engine haha. i got most of the issues fixed. Something new (issues) always pop up with it.
I have found that if that PCV valve is intact on the valve cover then the Intake Plenum will usually be okay too. However, if the car is NOT being maintained with regular oil changes and levels maintained (less n less people seem to know the importance of why & how to do this!) Then this will valve blows... And goes down the line... And if it's as Turbo add the the hoses... Not too mention they probably drive it like first off the Line and I find the Ladies to want to be driving faster n hence engine in worse condition too - this is not scientific! Just by chance with this platform and code... 171 is always unwanted air messing with air/fuel ratio. Was actually surprised this was a MAF sensor when the code was p0171. I never ever solved a code P0171 by replacing or cleaning a MAF. They are read by the PCM and tested on their own... If you saw a whiff of smoke on your air tube and tightened it down... I would personally would have give more effort and time to allow the electronics reset and recalibrate at that point before venturing onward...in fact after cleaning the MAF and re-sealing it in place that could have also stopped unwanted air from entering... I was NOT THERE JUST BEING AN ARM CHAIR QUARTER-BACK ON A SUNDAY 9 MONTHS AFTER THE FACT! I hate to replace parts unless it is absolutely necessary and I am Root Cause of the Problem kinda of Guy! So I think this one is like a NTF/Problem Cleared While Testing. You cleared it...it was an air leak.
