Bank of North Dakota’s College Handbook (collegehandboo...) is your resource for career planning information!
Dual credit and Advanced Placement courses are options for students to take college level coursework to prepare them for college, but there are a few differences:
• Dual credit courses are college classes that you can take during high school to earn BOTH high school and college credits. These are typically general education courses that a student will need no matter where they go or what they study, but your school may offer additional options.
• Advanced placement or AP offers students rigorous coursework, similar to dual credit, except students must take an exam and achieve a specific score to earn that credit. While AP classes are free, there is a charge for each AP exam that a student takes and if you don’t get the score you needed to earn credit, you’re out of luck.
The way that the courses transfer is up to the college that you’re attending.
• Dual credit classes are true college credit and will transfer to the college towards your degree plan or just as credit.
• AP test scores need to be sent to that college to be evaluated. Most colleges have policies about AP classes, so make sure you check what that is. If you end up transferring colleges, you’ll need to go through the process again.
