I remember the day i saw for the first time the Dreamcast version the day it was released, my jaw almost broke the floor, i was buying the console the next day along the game, man what a fucking amazing console.
I did the same thing. I thought well this is cool, but it's FMV so big deal....then the game started and I was also blown away. The dreamcast had alot of those moments. Code Veronica as well did that.
yep, i was a pc gamer, and there was nothing like this on pc, the same for sonic adventure, well almost everything lol, that 60fps wow, RE code veronica. PC had a lot to catch up

Adolf kitler sega had already fucked things up, they did everything right with dreamcast except for using a gd rom which not only meant they lost money through piracy, because pirated games were on CD they were compressed to 70% of the original code so when people played these games they would get the impression that the dreamcast was a bit shit, i played a few copied games a friend gave to me, crazy taxi and daytona had polygons going missing the sound was poor.... so piracy hit sega twice but it was just 1 of a multitude of things that killed sega's dreamcast dream!
PS2 never had anti-aliasing as a hardware effect. Dreamcast did. PS2 had more processing power, and RAM and it was harder to program for to get the most out of the system. Later on, developers put anti-aliasing as a software trick. Dreamcast had more hardware effects and easier to get the peak performance out of it. Plus it had more VRAM. Both GameCube and Dreamcast had more hardware effects. You can see this in Code Veronica port to the PS2, the Dreamcast version was cleaner despite coming out originally as a exclusive for the Dreamcast. RE4 looked better on GameCube than the PS2. PS2 was notorious for it's jagged edges.
everyone can see that the ps2 has better details and better anti alaising and more details in the game ahahahah funny. But sure the ps2 was more powerfull then the dreamcast.
Both versions have their advantages. The image quality of the DC Version is much cleaner, better anti aliasing, sharper textures, while the PS2 version has more geometry/polygons, some extra lighning effects. Tecmo did a good job by using the advantages of both systems.
+Brad Tyler Most of those games where Naomi games, you know the beefed up dreamcast that was running in the arcades. Naomi had 32mb ram 16mb Vram, Dc had 16mb ram 8mb vram, Ps2 had 8mb ram 4mb Vram so Naomi ports would always run/look better on Dc. But although Soulcalibur 1 looks awesome on Dc, it can't touch SC2 or SC3 on ps2. That being said Sega did manage to get to run VF4 on Ps2 which was a Naomi 2 game.
Not really: the PS2 always used to look "foggy" and "blurry", at least in the first two years. Later the game developers seemed to have figured that out. They never got around the jagged edges, from lack of hardware antialiasing though. The Dreamcast did have a superior image quality on regular TVs in the days when these two consoles were still up against each other.
Man, DOA2 blew my mind back in the day I remember watching my friend and his brother play it and I couldn't believe my eyes... It was just such a beautiful game! And how the stages had multiple levels you could fall to, and the speed of the fighting... Still one of my all time favorite 3D fighters :) ... And yeah, the Dreamcast version looks to be in many cases sharper and more clear.. where as the PS2 version is more soft and muddy... But both are incredibly beautiful, and if you look closely there are some additional graphical details in some cases in the PS2 version and sometimes instead on the Dreamcast, so I do believe it's also a little about preference and which controller you'd rather play on... For me both the Dreamcast and PS2 were some of my all time favorite consoles... And still to this day I feel sad and confused as to why the Dreamcast failed... It really had everything! Amazing gem games right from the start, beautiful graphics that still hold up today... maybe the market just simply became too crowded with also XBOX hitting the scene back then and playstation sadly pretty much stole Sega's role in the console market. Now I'm just hoping that Nintendo's Switch saves them... it would be incredibly sad if all we had was playstation and xbox one day...
The lighting is more realistic in the PS2 version, even if darker overall, and actually has a more consistent look for things like Kasumi that would carry on in the series. Dreamcast is sharper and has more color, but it retains some old school 3D anime look as a result, setting it apart from the rest of the series.
The Dreamcast could have been a contender. It's such a shame how Sega was so badly managed in the late 90s. This console easily compares to the PS2 and the GameCube.
It was meant to. If it could have read dvd roms and if it would have had a right thumb-stick two shoulders buttons on the controller. It had enough power to compete. But it can read unlicensed code and is still being developed for today by indy devs
GameCube was the most powerful console of that generation, you need to go look at the ATI specs and what it could do. Resident evil 4 and the resident evil remakes show how powerful it was, alongside the rogue squadron games. Put it this way.....the next Xbox had an ATI chip in it...
@yanceyboyz xbox was the most powerful that gen, but yes, gamecube was 2nd most powerful, and i think re4 (on gamecube)might be the best looking 6th gen game. I think it was just well balanced.
@@danbaker9492 there isn't anything that makes the Xbox more powerful. It had a higher clock speed on much older hardware. Rogue squadron pushed the most polygons that generation, so if you're measuring by how many polygons a system could push, the GameCube won and it did it at 60fps. It's a very common debate about which one was most powerful. To be honest I think they were both absolute beasts, and for everything the cube did that Xbox didn't...the Xbox had it's own thing. I will say though many GameCube games like re remake and re zero looked better than anything else that generation to the point that the modern HD remasters are literally just resolution bumps, that's how good the original assets were. You don't see that too often for the Xbox games. Dead or alive 3 though was a wow kinda game.
Differences I've noticed: 1. Kasumi's hair, 2 color contrast (PS2 looks like in HD 3. Player Select is a bit different ( no animations in DC) Personally I like both versions and I know in PS2 they added more stuff to it ( costumes maybe) but I would have to say I like the Dreamcast version more.
I think it's simply down to this game was made for the Dreamcast. It was simply ported to the PS2. Aside from the extras on PS2 version, I prefer the DC version. But either version is a damn fine fighter.
Not entirely the fault of the system. During the early PS2 days, the devs were kinda getting used to the system. PS2 had a lot of improvement over time. It just had a learning curve for devs.
Dreamcast has 8 MB of RAM for graphic. Maybe PS2 has better lighting effects but the 4 MB of RAM was a limitation and the games always looked less brighter and grey colors.

Ps2 was not more powerfull as it seems ! The Dreamcast had double the VRam of the PS2 so less loading time, had a perfect 480p, for the time it was Golden, but because of the Higher Resultion, it was lacking in Special Effects ... and no DVD player PS2 had half the Vram of the Dreamcast, 480i , means it was a streched 480p , low quality , and better FX, Oh and the DVD player, the Real console killer for the Dreamcast
it's interesting to see a few pieces of geometry in the PS2s favor. other than that the dreamcast whoops it in every way. the most notable thing to me is the floor textures in the missile arena place. They used a blinking red light to try to hide the fact that the detailed textures are completely gone. Also the end when she fights ein the textures are night and day. All this with dreamcast operating at roughly twice the res. It's impressive to see.
DC (480p/ 640x480p) = 640px x 480px = 307,200 native pixels per frame. PlayStation 2 (480i/ 512x448i) = 512px x 224px = 114,688 native pixels per field. That's a very significant 168% increase in native resolution on DC - or - a massive 2.7x increase in native pixel count.
I was quite surprised at how much better. It appears to be significantly higher resolution textures in many places. Look at the floor details just before the 8 min mark. It also appears to have more physics details, took at the hair flow on some of the fighters compared to the ps2. Over all the DC has considerably sharper graphics. I dont know if it's an issue with how it's being captured or just a weakness in the PS2. Perhaps it's an AA issue or it may be running in a lower resolution. Who knows, it definitely looks poor in comparison.
SomethingNewEveryDay No, it's not from the capturing of the video. I remember in the early days the PS2 always looked either blurry or suffered from very jaggged edges on all obcects.
This game was made for the DC first, with its strengths in mind. The PS2 version is a later port with some effects added to it (better lighting and backgrounds), but suffers from the jagged edges that plagued early PS2 games and blurry textures. Also, the DC's VGA box makes for a much smoother look for modern eyes...
The PS2 version has additional effects like reflections and wind, improved lighting, and some cosmetic enhancements like added geometry in stages. The Dreamcast version runs at higher image resolution and has higher resolution textures though.
PS2 has better water effects but the colors feel a little washed out. Dreamcast is superior and the 8MB of video ram really do help making the game look really sharp compared to the PS2. Dreamcast was such an amazing machine.
@Doktor He is right to point out the main ram since the PS2 was able to make better use of the main ram because of it's super fast bandwidth. The DC was forced to store geometry in the VRAM which also put a limit on the Dreamcast's polygon count, while the PS2 stored it in the main ram. The PS2 was also able to store textures in the main ram and stream them over. Games like FF12 Burnout 3 and MGS3 would of looked like shit on the DC.
Dreamcast é superior nesse game. Agora imaginem se ele tivesse a vida útil prolongada até 2008 (exemplo). Teríamos jogos de qualidade incontestáveis e fazendo páreo com consoles mais poderosos. Dei chance a SEGA naquela época e comprei o Dreamcast em seu auge da vida. Apostei na SEGA desde o Master System e nunca me arrependi. Consoles formidáveis.
What i read is that the ps2 has problems with the anti-aliasing (aa) most notables in the early tittles. While in the dreamcast the aa was automatic, there was sevaral kinds of aa in the ps2. The one that sony provided in the developers manual was very tricky to use so the developers discovered an automatic aa using motion blur...thats why the titles looked blur or not sharp. I think The ps2 japanese version of doa 2 doesnt use this motion blur but the usa version does
PS2 started off a bit worse since it was harder to develop for, but once developers got used to it, they were able to make games that really took advantage of the system

thats bullsh*t . The dreamcast version has anti aliasing and a way better texture compression (by hardware). PS2s textures are washed out . The aliasing on PS2 is awful.
I mean that's your opinion but I have a pair of eyes that tells me different and I also on both systems and had the game on both of them and yes they do tend to look a bit better on the PS2.
As limited as the DC was it was always firing on all cylinders from day one thanks to its built-in hardware capabilities: unusually high resolution thanks to vast VRAM of 8MB (PS2 only had 4MB), progressive scan, anti-aliasing, texture-compression, multi-texturing and mip-mapping made the console initially look better than its raw tec specs suggested. In the long run however it could not withstand the PS2 superior processing power and bandwidth.
It’s 2017 and still playing DOA2 on Dreamcast is amazing! This is why I love my Dreamcast! Although the Xbox DOA2 Extreme is also great and you can even play it in the Xbox 360! Your videos are amazing man! Keep it up!
eu discordo somente em dois estágios o dreamcast tem melhores texturas, o castelo e a prisão mas nos demais as tetxuras são iguais ou melhores no ps2, como no da neve bem melhor no ps2, as roupas de couro parecem couro no ps2, os detalhes nos vestidos você ver furinhos só jogando para ver na roupa do jan lee e da lei feng, os detalhes metálicos se parecem metais na roupa da Helena e do Hayabusa, iluminação e reflexo adicionados em todos os mapas do jogo, motion blur nos golpes, motion blur pesadissimo na luta cm tengu ficou bem melhor, vento na neve e no cenário exclusivo do deserto, maior contagem poligonal, melhor água, efeitos de fog etc o dreamcast só é limpo porque é plano, carece de iluminação, se o dev desliga o motor de iluminação a versão ps2 ficaria simples igual a do dreamcast, 60fps nas cutscenes contra 30fps do dreamcast etc a versão ps2 só não executa em progressive scan pois ainda não havia sido habilitado para a máquina, só foi habilitado quando saiu tekken 4, mais de um ano depois e doa 2 foi lançamento do ps2. o melhor do dreamcast contra o primeiro jogo do ps2, os dev kit todo toscos e mesmo assim o console da sony fez melhor.
The PS2 version had a better framerate (especially during the cut scenes), better textures (way more details on the clothes and the textures don't degrade when it's ingame. Dreamcast as auto anti aliasing, nothing for the PS2. The PS2 had tons of effects added after and more things for it too (it also appear after the DC version, so that helps). It does look like that the DC version light was only on the characters and not on the whole scene like the PS2 version, which gave a sharper look for the DC.
It's constant 60 on PS2. On Dreamcast the cutscene frame was slower (when 2 player was shown) it's because it wasn't exactly the same models during the cutscenes (I had both version).

Dreamcast version is cleaner and brighter it still looks good today . PlayStation version us blurry and dark. lots of glitchy lines especially when planning through the scenery

Not really true. For most people, at the time, comparison wasn't as common so for the PS2, they didn't NEED to make it look better, since it looked good enough. Plus, Sega lost a lot of trust. The models for the PS2 though looks much better and the still images for the PS2 seem superior.
PS2 ahead of its time with Instagram filters ;) Dreamcast naturally amazing. I had both consoles ( I still onw a PS2) and was so sad that the Dreamcast was abandoned. I loved this console
It sure did! And the Dreamcast was two years older than the PS2. Its main competitors were the N64 and the PS1. The Dreamcast disappeared from the shelves about a year after the PS2 came out. And I never saw a platform with so many great exclusive (or at least then exclusive) game titles in such a short time period! I am so happy that they are finally making Shen Mue III (for PS4 and PC)! Guess I will have to undust my old DC to replay the first two games. :-)
siloPIRATE Yeah, that's true. The later games certainly looked better than most Dreamcast games. But he PS2 was insanely hard to develop for, much like the Saturn in the Previous generation. It took some time until the game makers learned how to use the hardware to its full extent.

Only the lighting and Post processing effects look better on PS2 but I remember playing it on Dreamcast the most with a VGA cord connected on my CRT Monitor which looked amazing and crisp

Looks like the dreamcast is running at a higher resolution, while the ps2 version has some implementation of bloom lighting and frame blurring (you will notice ghosting artifacts if you pause the video on the ps2 while the dc doesn't have that.
Dreamcast version is a pixel perfect conversion of the naomi arcade board that powered DOA2. The ps2 suffered from horrid aliasing, blurred textures and poor texture filtering. Also they changed the light. Dreamcast also had a VGA Mode through a cable that were amazing on PC monitors.
Notes: the color is better on the DC side yes but the lighting and particle effects are far superior on the PS2 version and with the added Extras DOA2 Hardcore bring make it a better choice IMO

Dreamcast haved 2 versions of this game: DOA2 and DOA 2: Limited Editions (just japanese) as far I know The PS2 version is more similar to the LE one. I think you are using the LE version on the dreamcast side cause it seems Kasumi has 2 hairstyles selectable, isn it?
Character models look a lot more striking and crisp in the Dreamcast version. They're very dull in the PS2 version, and you can see the polygon lines where everyone's limbs are. I noticed a lot of PS2 games were very muddy and dull compared to the same game that was on other ports. Good example is RE: Code Veronica.

é uma pena o que a sega fez com o Dreamcast... erros atras de erros. Tinha um potencial gigante e deixaram tudo ir por água abaixo. E pior ainda é ver a Nintendo cometendo os mesmos erros que a sega cometeu no passado com o Wii U.

You guys aren't considering that Dreamcast era didn't have a lot of the effects around that even the ps2 introduced and wasn't good at. There was a massive jump in polygon count and texture quality plus higher resolution. It was from lack of technology and research that it looked more plain... I guarantee, that even producing a game for it now would give a better result.
Dreamcast is brighter & easier to see. idk if it's me but it also looks like it runs at a higher frame-rate too. PS2 has more particle effects along with more lighting/shadowing. but the textures look ugly & kinda has a motion blur going on which looks even worse.
+silvestrevidro Verdade, mas a mídia do Dreamcast é Gd-Rom, cuja capacidade é 1.2 gb , que é como se fosse um Cd-Rom de dupla camada, cujo formato foi criado pela Sega em parceria com a Hitachi E para a época do Dreamcast (1998), ter algo como mídia Dvd era inviável devido ao alto custo, sem contar que a Sega teria ter que pagar roayalite pra Sony pelo uso do Dvd no Dc, por sinal, esse é um dos motivos do Gamecube ter como mídia o Mini-Dvd e tb um dos motivos do Wii não rodar filmes Dvd apesar da mídia do Wii ser Dvd-rom. xD Mas tb acho q um dos grandes erros do Dreamcast, foi não ter adotado o Dvd como mídia, pois era um video game extremamente avançado e a frente do seu tempo.
Este é o melhor vídeo de comparação dos dois DoA2 que já vi,os outros emparelhava muito as versões ,neste não tem nem o que discutir,a versão Dreamcast é bem melhor,mais nítida,melhores texturas,no ps2 parece que tá tudo borrado,tem uns efeitos a mais e cutcenes a 60 fps mas no geral perde pro Dreamcast!e olha que tenho um ps2 com o jogo e nunca tive um Dreamcast

I noticed this with Tekken 4 on PS2 recently, very dark and blurry compared to DoA2 on Dreamcast which is super bright, clear and arcadey-feeling. I love how quiet the Dreamcast is too, compared to PS2. I remember being annoyed by the fan noise with PS2. Dreamcast is fanless like the PS1

I could go on, but this game is old and I don't care enough for it. Overall, I prefer the PS2 version.

PS2 looked better in image quality, but Dreamcast seemed to have had less blur during movement. PS2 had a cleaner look, but Dreamcast had better colors. Honestly, both seems to have pros and cons.
The Dreamcast version looks better overall but it kinda feels like PS2 has some more detail in some scenes. I believe the PS2 version was developed a lil bit later and some minor details were added in the meantime.
I'm not a sega fan but dreamcast is my favorite console and did you know that Nintendo took inspiration from the controller for dreamcast by putting a screen in the controller 😃
I can see where the uploader used the original version of dead or alive 2 on the PS2. Gives more of a fair comparison since the Dreamcast version only had the original release for Dead or Alive 2. By the time that dead or alive 2 hardcore came out, I believe that the Dreamcast was already discontinued? I could be wrong.
Las ventajas en texturas y resolución que tiene Dreamcast y las ventajas que tiene PS2 en geometría, sombras e iluminación, Tecmo hizo un excelente trabajo aprovechando las capacidades de ambas consolas.
Ps2 only has more geometry on the churge level's floor, otherwise they're the same. Plus the shadows are the same, too. But yes, i think they took advantage of both console's strengths, too😊
