GAMEPLAY from RAYSTORM AND LAYER SECTION 2 on the PLAYSTATION AND SEGA SATURN.
Raystorm was developed on the PSone by Taito, and later converted to the Saturn as Layer section 2 by media quest. how does the saturn version stack up? take a look at the video :)
some extras were added to the Saturn version, a third craft was unlocked from the start of the game, and superfluous FMV added to introduce some stages. Loading screen art was also added (Playstation had plain white loading screens)
the games graphics are very similar across formats. the main differences i can see are the Playstation has fewer pixels to render - it looks like a 256 pixel vs Saturn 320 pixel screen. the Playstation has more polys / more detail in a few models and the textures have a more muted and cleaner look. the Saturn version has a higher contrast to the textures, the saturation is pumped up on a few of them, and a lot seem slightly lower res on the Saturn. this gives the Saturn a grubbier appearance in some areas.
Saturn uses net effect transparencies, which doesn't look great. Playstation has some glows around lasers that are missing on the Saturn. Both systems use light sourcing and shading, as well as transparency effects on background elements. Frame rate is comparable on both systems.
Saturn uses bitmap background for some environment details, which means some areas (like the floor on the first boss) look better on the Saturn - the Playstation suffers from warping polys, but on other background elements the Playstations use of 3d gives the superior effect - the moon in particular at the end of level 4 looks completely distorted on the Saturn where it uses a 2d bitmap.
overall the Psone version looks nicer, and slightly less chunky than the Saturn versions, but its not a huge gap between the two systems.
the game plays the same way on both systems. both versions are great with their own quirks

People say Saturn has no transparencies, however those grids are designed for CRTs which blur them to make transparent textures thus saving resources. The PlayStation also does this with texture/colour depth and dithering in many games. It's best played on a CRT for these two systems if you wish to see their full potential.

The dither pattern on Playstation games is very visible on emulation, like you say on CRT not so much. i've always played my Saturn through RGB scart so i'm pretty used to seeing the net effect transparency even on CRT.

Actually that's only true if you use composite cables. Unlike Japan and US, both PS1 and Saturn back then came with RGB scart cables in Europe and Australia mainly to avoid standard mess (PAL/SECAM) that's why most people didn't see the blended dither pattern on the Saturn on their TVs back then.

@@MNaka-uf9yz yep this is true. the dither pattern i'm talking about on Psone is some weird shading thing i think, you see it most visibly in 2D games (but still visible in 3d) as a diamond-ish shaped pattern on any flat colours its very odd, but the Dreamcast also has it in a couple of games (Last Blade 2 for example) i'm guessing any connection up to s-video blends it all away. The transparency dither on Saturn was still noticeable with standard RF cables from hazy memory of 1995 playing Panzer Dragoon, it had an unusually clean RF signal compared to the previous gen stuff.

@@retrospiritsgaiden2643 I used the Saturn with an S-Video cable back when it was released and could clearly see the fake transparencies. I think it was more so composite and RF that the effect was more hidden.

@@Megageoe the fake transparencies don't really bother me if used on small things/sparingly, but on this game they go full screen with them...it's not pretty once you see it - you're always looking out for them :(

some of the missing details are odd, like a missing poly here or an alpha texture there...but considering it was made specifically for Psone's 3d architecture and then ported to saturn - great job!

Saturn has some structures lacking some angles. Probably because the texures would be all warped when they force the quad to act as a triangle.

yep that's a definite possibility, i remember from back in the day the only way to fix that is to subdivide into smaller quads to reduce the warping (making it higher poly for no visual benefit)

A couple of things to consider: 1. RayStorm was originally released for Taito’s FX-1 System, which is based on PS1 hardware 2. The Saturn can’t do real transparencies like the PS1 or the SNES; it uses dithering for pseudo-transparencies, which is noticed when using an S-Video connection or higher 3. The Saturn version was ported by a different company (Tose)

"The Saturn can’t do real transparencies" --> it can, at least using the VDP2 framebuffer "trick" as seen in Burning Ranger. Also there is the software rendering option.

the Saturn did a pretty good job here, it has some minor differences in geometry or downgraded effects, but also a couple of improvements in some instances.

For some one who only played the Saturn a few times I wonder if Sega will ever return a sequel console system machine the concept is that they should and can still make and manufacturing for both themselves and others far a profit margin but the most important thing is themselves for right now by locally and foreignly rebuilt their dynasty and be as useful as every days life society retakes the mainstream norm and beyond for the back and front and side streets kids teens and KIDULTS all over safety first 🥇 practice thier it isnt always a tutorial so start making your own plus the comic book narrative 😜😀 makes keeping up with the past even more fun and exciting in casings your self and dreams and a part of your own snd group imagination and experience through conversations is one of them time is free and is so abundant and rampit tske time for everything is a real to unreal to real again and font be afraid to change the background of your self cockyness can get you smacked and outline booted off the team it's not just about video games THIER beeps and blurps be oriented and original follow your own teachings while being taught to be someone careers only matter if your a career ladder leader besides that life is ever lasting hustle and journey hustle doesn't always mean street hustle it's a variety of things in life itself from relapsing to non relapsing sometimes we fall back on the road to redemption but the joy of it all we give and gave it a shot every now and then so keep it going don't kill yourself or someone else just to stay up lay low sometimes let the idea river flow through circulating leave and come again you'd think it better that way when it comes to being good or bad mostly thats karma based and mentally treaded on the fifth wall 🧱 is made the forth wall 🧱 and windows 🪟 are there to protect you as well as the Roof above you and floor under you and mostly the door 🚪 in front of behind you key point 😧😜 give a chance because you may have been given a chance no saud dont do the right thing take into mind the right thing is being used by yourself to make the decision that can solve save and redeem your own mind we may not always communicate the same but with communication and trying we can have a safe saved and satisfied sanctified life being bad compared to being good isn't based on a computer game but on how you designed yourself in life a parent and or guardians and friends issues also the stanky mind bro is the mind with the most waste and most thoughts on it when clean it's a bank load and who knows you might have million dollars ideas ready to be copy righted and patented don't be afraid to advance even if you fail or think you are going to try and try again some times procrastinating means deep thought 🤔😏💭 and deep thought just means sleeping on your own dreams 💖 pass them gently to your children if you think time ran out it's only the beginning good night 🌉🌃🌉 god bless talk more rather then less oddly you might can a life

from memory, that transparency technique cause issues with polygons and/or sprites behind the transparency getting clipped (it only works over background layers) so i think that would've been bad for gameplay purposes

good question! its been a while since i played both but from hazy memory...the Psone soundtrack sounded a little 'brighter'somehow (i don't have great audio equipment though), also i seem to remember there's a slightly different mix on the music vs the sound effects volume in each. i've not finished each game (not skilled enough to 1cc these yet!) so i don't know if the music deviates after stage four.

Seemed to be several instances where the music differed. PS1 version plays a really good intro tune during the pre-title demo, while Saturn version seems to cycle through one of the more generic BGMs. Also found it weird that the first boss music on Saturn didn't cut in until the boss was almost dead, and it played some completely other tune in the meantime. I feel like these could have been oversights by the team doing the port, and not caught or really noticed by anyone after the fact.

@@retrospiritsgaiden2643 mine came with my playstation it had amored core on there which was my favorite,porshe challange,a tank game that was pretty cool,Croc,parappa the rapper,intelligent cube I couldnt get enough of and I still want that game,and if you press r2 the tiles would flip over showing a code that allows you to play fighting force demo

The disc that came with my console was the one with the T-Rex and Manta ray demos, it may also have had Crash Bandicoot on it. i used to love a good demo disc!

Layer section is a better name than galactic attack that they used for the PAL game, so i think they made the right choice. they call them Raystorm 1&2 now though!

agreed:) porting from playstation to saturn (and vice versa) is always going to result in differences. Although both consoles have similar power they have very different hardware, which is why these comparisons are cool to see.

Both look fine, but Saturn is objectively worse, no transparencies, more pixelized, some polygons looking all wrong.

Saturn version is windowed and very slow... the emulator correct lots of things from that point of view. i found the portage very poor compared to the fun of the original. there is something ironic in that one of the flagship of the PS1 went on Saturn with additional FMV and various bonus after thunderforce 5 did the same on PS1 the other way around. i'd like to have the best of both world in one single version.

when playing this game on a Saturn on CRT with RGB scart cable I don't notice any borders, when using an upscaling device (such as a framemeister) there are borders on modern monitors or televisions at the top and bottom, because of integer scaling (although you can fudge it to be be fullscreen on other upscaling solutions i believe). in my experience these borders happen on Psone, Saturn, N64, dreamcast...can't remember if it applies to snes, pce, megadrive (etc) games when upscaled. the Saturn version framerate is slightly worse the PSone in some areas in this game

Owning and playing both of these on original hardware, I was more sensitive to the Saturn version not maintaining as smooth of a frame rate in several areas. I didn’t accurately measure as it was just my perception playing back to back and this being one of my favorite shmups of the 32bit era. I tested on a crt tv and LG CX with RT4K. Still an impressive port considering the origins of the development but hard to go back to the saturn version after noticing

@@beebeedeluxe i have both of these games on original hardware too, there are some differences in frame rate, and the way the graphics are constructed on the Saturn using some 2D backgrounds rather than polys sometimes looks marginally better but other times looks far worse than the Playstation 3D (if you notice it). i agree it's a pretty decent port.

Not bad on Saturn at all. PS1 is definitely the way to go and that makes sense since it was designed for it. PS1 = a good bit higher res textures, full alpha transparancies, heavy texture warping, and slightly punchier audio, water looks worse, performance slightly better. Saturn = Mesh transparancies, except when viewing geometry underwater as that's all fully transparent, good bit lower res textures, Very little to no texture warping ( water is nice and smooth perspective correct), Slightly lower audio pitch, water looks better, performance slighty worse. Both loading pretty much the same. Not bad for a machine that was weak at 3D ( I'm joking as thats a fanboy myth they wish was true ) and it handles things pretty decently, keeping up with PS1 in performance overall. The thing I've noticed is if PS1 got a port from a Saturn designed game ( Soukyugurentai ) the downgrades are pretty massive with a lot of things cut and performance really hurting PS1 as far as I've seen in contrast to this which is only a little downgraded on Saturn.

Nice summary. The Saturn puts up a good show here for sure, i agree with your point about porting - i think that's why games like Radiant Silvergun didn't get ported to PSone - the Saturn had too many custom bits and bobs in it for doing stuff like infinite planes you'd have to do with polygons on Psone.

Saturn obviously performs better though, not seeing any frame dips but the PS1 version is chugging in some spots. Also seems more vibrant with color palette, PS1 version looks strangely dim. The biggest advantage though is the Saturn controller being so much better for this type of game than the PS1 controller, that thing is so awful.

This should get a re release when needed as a double pack Saturn box set for the PlayStation game system a PlayStation box set also when these two machines where born or created and retail sold in on store market shelves the Saturn itself was a strong device I had only a few hands on playing time experience with it at the time they share the same factory almost the same factory engine with a few exceptions the customization engine parts 🚂🚒🚂🚒 like a Honda and a Hyundai had the same parts but they came with a situation similar but like Sony Electronics PlayStation plus and Sega electronics Saturn the brand name companies share a Sony Electronics processor or that was the Sega Genesis but the architecture remains the same factory engine the custom graphics card artists design made the unique to each other though looking similar they indeed came into Two very Obvious Different Shells and no I'm not talking about it's pre sale she'll the one in retail stores 🏬

i have the Playstation double pack of Raystorm and Raycrisis, it's pettry cool. The Saturn should've got Layer Section and Layer Section 2 as a double pack :) from what i remember the Playstation had a custom MIPS processor/GPU and the Saturn had 2x Hitachi SH2s, plus a DSP - i'm not sure they are that similar internally, but the resulting games are pretty comparable, on multiplatform games it seems the system that was the lead console for development usually having the better version because specific hardware tricks were difficult to replicate on the other device.

The saturn usually has both sharper textures and more rich colours as well as clearer audio that the ps1 ywt in this game,its the exact opposite,if no one told me what console was playing left to right i would have said saturn was on the left

the weird thing is the Saturn version seems to run at a higher resolution, yet looks more pixelly. according to my captures, the game seems to run in 256x256 on Playstation but 320x256 on Saturn. Anyway i like the game on both formats:)

PS wins due to transparencies... also, Saturn seems to have some pixel-crawling/warping issues. The image on the PS seems more stable. But I think I would not have been disappointed with the Saturn-version either. I had it on PS since I got it for free (tho I had a Saturn as well and I liked games like Thunder Force V or Radiant Silvergun). Always loved that soundtrack by Zuntata... they are so legendary and that style just fits a game like this PERFECTLY. Gives the game so much atmosphere and immersion, it's not even funny. So a great job in the music department! Gameplay-wise, the game leaves a bit to be desired IMO. It is good, don't get me wrong, but there is something missing for it to be great. For example, I would have loved to see more tactical finesse, like a better extra weapon/ship upgrade system with player decisions, and also something more to do for the player like the "force" in R-Type or something similar. Maybe more ships to control and more ways to defeat the enemies. What works well in this game is the good old "Panzer Dragoon"ish mark multiple enemies and unleash hell-system. Overall, I still have fond memories on this game.

Apenas mais transparência no PS1, mas o o frame rate é melhor no Saturn. Num geral, e se tratando de um jogo 3D, a versão do Saturn ficou melhor. Além de travar no PS1, tem tela preta em alguns momentos do jogo.

the game textures do have more contrast and are more saturated in areas. TBH i've not noticed bigger sprites in the saturn game.

don't know about that. good games are good games, Saturn has plenty of them. TBH all i remember from back then was lots of really cool games on various consoles, and nothing that interested me on PC.
