Dual-Purpose Fat Snare / Floor Tom | Season Three, Episode 31

After receiving quite a few requests, we decided to tackle the subject of using a deep snare as a hybrid floor tom / fat snare drum. While there are certainly different approaches out there, we decided to go with a method that would best serve both sounds: a snare drum sounding like a 14” tom and a deep, fat snare.

I'll throw a wild curve ball your way: set up a cocktail style drum (floor tom with inverted pedal or Tama cocktail jam for example) in your floor tom position next to your bass drum. Gives you two different bass drum sounds for your right foot to switch between as well as you can use the inverted pedal for pitch bends on your floor tom.

@@SoundsLikeADrum Set up a normal bass drum and snare drum then the cocktail jam mini in your mounted tom position and the regular cocktail jam in the floor tom position! Typical 4pc style set up but with 3 different tonal bass drums and pitch bend capabilities on both toms :D

What about if you set that drum up to the left (or right if you play a mirror kit) of your hihat? might be kind of a stretch, but it would give you a floor tom on the opposite side and double kick or an alternate kick sound... or remote hat as your main hat and sneak the hihat pedal under your snare a little bit... I watched this video and thought it might be more useful for me to have a floor tom on my left that could double as a deep snare. Crazy what comes to you when you open your mind. I mean they are all movable. We can place them anywhere. We are just limited by our imaginations.

Cody, great info for an Old New Drummer. I play for retirement pleasure at 69yo. This is a typical Cody terrific job and sending newness as food for thought. After seeing this, I will return a recently purchased Mapex Piccolo snare 13 x 3.5 , and exchange for a Snom 15 x 7 drum to try this. I don't play gigs, unless with more practice, I can join a Geriatric band at the Knights of Columbus (when this freakin COVID passes ). At 69, stricken with lots of arthritis in many areas of my body, playing drums is one remaining ability left to me, so far anyway. Take it from an old timer,. Drink lots of water. I did not, a big mistake as many of my spinal discs have deteriorated. Happy Holidays All ,. God Bless , be safe. Happy Music !!

I did exactly the same thing. Made a "snom" out of an 80s era, 14x12 Ludwig marching snare. I purchased some floor tom mounts and legs, then added them to the snare. I will say that I'm not sure the gut snares really bring out the right characteristic from this contraption, but that can be easily remedied by cutting/sanding some shallow snare beds and replacing the strainer for a standard snare strainer. Good luck and have fun with it. Mine turned out really cool looking.

I just picked up one of those 14x7 Wood Hoop PDP snares to try my hand at this, and it has been SUCH a fun journey for someone who likes to tinker with drums and tunings. I play a bop kit, so I have 14x5 snare, 14x7 “snare”/tom/thing, and a 14x14 floor tom. It’s been a really cool experience to play with 3 drums of the same diameter and dial in different tones based on the depth and where they sit in the kit.

I play as a one man band, with an inverted 10x14 parade snare operated by my left foot, primarily (actually have a double pedal so I can play snare drum patterns). I just contracted with local drum builder, Bill Allen (Of Sterling Drums) to build a new kit including a 9x14 snare. This new drum will also be used as a floor “snom”. Then all that’s needed will be a 7x12 rack “snom”!

I recently got a vintage Beverley kit, and then I saw a vintage Beverley marching snare on the cheap and couldn’t resist buying it to add on! I’m using it as a ‘snom’ now and it’s cool (helps that it’s 14x9). One issue I found specific to a marching drum is the top set of snares; even dis-engaged the top head was generating a click from them, perhaps due to the low tuning and movement in the head. Undeterred, I saw an opportunity and covered these snares with cloth... now it’s got instant internal muffling when engaged and helps kill overtones when not engaged! Very enjoyable drum!

So I’ve tried a ton of different heads to get this sound following yours and Larnell’s advice, including the Evans Hydraulic. Hydraulic definitely gives the best range of tuning but your Tom sound can definitely suffer imo. For me, ideally, the drum blending well with the other toms when it’s in Tom mode is a top priority for me. In that vein, I have just had great success with the Remo ps4 coated. Just thought I’d share! It was the last one I thought to try and it’s my favorite by far.

It’s so freaking boss to have this double feature of an instrument & what we can do with these instruments. I play a 1 up, 2 down set-up. Absolutely love having 2 floor toms! I really enjoy the look on ppl’s faces when they finally “figure out” what sounds are coming from that 1 instrument. It’s almost as if they found an alien. Which, technically, they kind of did. I have been thinking of this addition since I saw, I think, a Pearl 14" floor tom with snare wires on a NAMM video earlier this year. Well this video hooked me. I have a black Pearl 8 X14" Modern Utility snare drum ordered from Sweetwater with an Evans oil filled head coming as well. I will be adding this to my 1962 Ludwig "Hollywood" kit that I've owned since I was 15 and as some one said below you could put this to the left of your hihat as well. I also have a 1986 Pearl all maple set that this set up would work with.

Thanks for this. I need to work on my 14x8 DW performance snare. I had an evans snare side 300 but switched to an Evans genera resonant clear on bottom. I found it gave me a fuller floor Tom sound. I use the puresound 30 strand wires on it to compensate snare response with the thicker bottom head. Currently have an Evans UV2 batter but really want to try the hydraulic. I may switch back to the 300 and try tuning it up higher than I had it before once I get the hydraulic.

I got a 16x10 SLP duo birch a few weeks ago. I put it last, kinda a little behind me, after shallow 12 and 14 toms on a Tama Neo Mod kit. Sounds great there. Arrived in good shape and tuning. No cross talk or anything. Snares go low and high without problems, just the general fundamentals of those tensions, maybe even more forgiving and easy to work with. Came with an Emad. Nice drum. I was gonna pick a hydraulic as an option too. You summed up my experience with your observations. Nice "quick & warm" tom sounds. Fat deep usable snare effects. Dig it. Might try hydraulics on the whole set for some cool sounding continuity 👍

I did this on my Sonor aq2 safari kit, using the matching snare as the hybrid, and a piccolo snare as my main. The snare is 13x6.5 and with a hydraulic head and some tuning, it's a totally electronic/sampled kind of sound. The tough part was getting it tuned to a place that was below the 10" tom and above the 13" floor tom. I ended up eventually giving up and tuning the 10 higher than I usually do and bringing up the register of the whole kit to compliment. But this business about swapping the snare side head that you mention has got me all jazzed up to experiment more!

From what I hear, that snare is set up a lot more wet than Larnell or Sput tends to use theirs. It’s a trick of the ear - the sustain of the drums around it disguise how much dampening is being used.

Two tips: pick a snare with a throw off that really moves the snares away from the head so they don’t jangle when playing hard (my 14x8 Mapex MPX doesn’t qualify, tho it’s otherwise perfect for this application) Know that it will probably sound better through a mic than it does to your ear. Like, it’s hard to get an actual floor tom to mic as well as a floor tom as a well tuned 14x8 with a hydraulic does! (Pretty sure Larnell agrees)

@@justensen haven’t found a replacement for that one yet due to mounting hole spacing, but lots of others seem to move farther. Those that swing out instead of sideways generally seem to move snares farther. I should also switch to limp cords instead of stiff bands to see if that helps.

My PDP custom Maples that I bought last year came as a 7 piece but I only use 6 because it has a 14in floor tom that I don't use because I always thought a 14 inch floor tom was too small. And I never got used to more than one floor Tom. But this gives me an idea possibly. Could I convert my 14 floor tom 2 a dual role Tom snare? Could I possibly Mount a throw off and butt plate to it? And possibly use it as a left hand snare and floor Tom? The only problem is I would want to match the pitch of the 14 to the 16 floor tom on the other side but I don't think that's possible. I like to play U2 and that is his setup. Matching floor Tom's on the left and right. Suggestions anyone?

@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 3 года назад
This actually has less to do with precision tuning. Tuning to specific notes doesn’t lower the likelihood of sympathetic vibration. That’s entirely due to the proximity and relationship of frequencies, which is independent of whether a drumhead is tuned to an exact note.
