You should start making your own drums out of old shells you found. Maybe even start your own company!

Agree!
@generalshamic4777

But then it might make the drums more expensive because of all the man hours going into making it, possibly making it just as expensive or more expensive then a brand new drum

Did you use twice as many single-sided lugs rather than half as many double-sided lugs because that's all you had available?
@kingrick5494
@kingrick5494 3 года назад
I was wondering the same thing, only thing I could think is maybe there were non to fit the holes, but that seems unlikely 🤔. It also would’ve solved the problem he had of not being able to fit the snare holder (what’s it called?) between the lugs
@BCSchmerker
@BCSchmerker 8 лет назад
Thanks for showing us a bit of innovation in shallowing up a snare drum from an old tom; double-ended one-piece lugs were obviously needed here. I'd simplify it further and handle the snare conversion at the tom's original depth - only the snare bed need be routed out, and the strainers retrofitted, that way. Remo manufactures a fairly large number of reso diameters; the 12x7 snare project, for instance, would be a good candidate for the BA-0112-00 batter and SA-0112-00 3-mil reso with most 11"-long snare units.

I just converted a 10"×7" rack tom to a snare. Got the throw off mechanism from a 14" snare. bought a snare side hoop so it would look professional. cut my own beds with a file and sandpaper. this nice snare turned out professional looking and matches the rest of my kit. sounds awesome. The remaining matching 14" snare shell I then converted it to a subkick. I used those Pearl silent window screen heads to cover the speaker. It too looks professional.

I know you’re the expert, but it seems like you should’ve gotten lugs that fit the already drilled holes from the previous one that we’re double sided, if possible, so you wouldn’t have to drill new ones and that way wouldn’t have offset logs either

I thought you would have pulled out a dremel tool to cut that opening on the rim, I have to say I admire guy's like you because you aren't afraid to take a chance and try something. I hate messing things up because it cost's me extra money I can't spend so I don't try things, your video's kind of amp me up to try and build something or mod something maybe i'll get to that extra 12in tom I have and do some kind of a stain job.

Nothing like working in 3D and then finding something unforseen. Now I work up at least one prototype. For this project, a ring made from a cardboard box would have sufficed. One last tidbit. Put the finish on first and drill after. My first drum project was a TAMA tom conversion. The lugs were not offset which made it easier.

Nice job!! The drum looks beautiful. Have you considered using the second half of the tom to make a second snare? Im sure you could get a good price by selling one!
@rdavidr

I thought about it, but then id have to find hardware to match the existing holes, and by the time id buy everything for it id be in the hole pretty deep. I also cut up the cut off to make a sanding block to make sanding the inside easier haha. My intention was to sell this one after month or so just cause i never use 2 snares. I have an idea for the rest of the drum tho and will probably make a video in the near future

Man, I own a stave shell that needs some fixing to do. I wish I could find someone to do the job. The shell is 5"x13" and I want to reduce it to 4"x13". The thing is that it isn't completely flat outside. It needs sanding. It will also need the 45° bearing edges and snare beds. And new holes to upgrade from 6 to 8 lugs.
