Credit to George Ferris who was given the task out engineering the Eiffel Tower (another "temporary" structure) for the Chicago Columbian Exposition of 1892. He designed a tower that could rotate. The first "Ferris" Wheel was an incredible, for its day, 80 meters tall. There were 36 passenger cars, each fitted with 40 revolving chairs and able to accommodate up to 60 people, giving a total capacity of 2,160.

I hope this goes better then the Melbourne Star wheel. Melbourne's Observation Wheel opened in 2008, only to close 40 days later after a heat wave damaged joints and made then unknown cracks (due to a design problem) to get worse. The wheel had to be dismantled and rebuilt. It reopened in late 2013, almost 5 years after it closed. It's now closed again after the owner went bankrupt.

It is ironic that the narrator says "only in Dubai" would an 82 meter observation wheel be built, considering that the original observation wheel was 80.4 meters, built in Chicago for the 1893 World's Fair. That Ferris wheel (the rightful name, after its designer Washington Gale Ferris) could also hold 2,160 passengers in 36 cars the size of train cars, above the Dubai wheel's 1,750 capacity. Know your history!

London Eye is so popular because it is slap bang in the middle of one of the worlds most icon cities meaning it's very convenient, it's in a terrific location on the Southbank and it also has more than enough significant landmarks around it to make it worthwhile and London looks amazing day or night. This wheel however I don't know, is on an island far away from the main city, hopefully, its sheer size though should help make it a success.
