I'd be fairly sure removing 70% of the city population and making it a 5 hour trek into the city by foot is not something city planners are considering.
This gave me the chills, it's amazing to see Dublin back in 1915. It sad to say but I feel the city looked nicer back then, it doesn't look as run down and decrepit as now. It had a real soul to it and character. There are remnants of that left but it's sort of been ruined by horrible 70's architecture and dilapidation.
Really strange to see the butchers apron flying over the GPO at 2:20. Something which we don't have to put with these days, unless you live in the North.
bolouswki No. I fail to see what's strange on simply remarking on the flying of an contentious flag at an even more contentious time in Irish history. A time when the term "butcher's apron" was ubiquitous in not just Ireland but all around the world. But hey, if you wish to interpret that as hatred then you go right ahead baby.
A lot of reaching going on there buddy. So referring to the Union Jack flying over Dublin as the "Butchers Apron" (which is perfectly reasonable, considering the times) somehow equates to being "just another arsehole" with itchy trigger fingers? Amazing. Oh by the way, there's a plenty other "cretins" making similar comments on this video also. I take it you'll be saying the same thing to them other "cretins", yes?
Haven't been home to Dublin in about 15 years. I miss it. But the only thing in this video that hasn't really changed is at 3:26. Today that archway at the Liptons building leads onto Talbot St Upper (If I remember correctly?). I wonder if that what it was back then? I've stood there a 100 times as a teenager, sorting out the records I was going to sell in Freebird
Im thinking in that time the Irishemen Heroes are still alive . Pearse, Plunket, Clark, Mac Donagh, MacDiarmad, Ceannt, Connoly and so many others brave men that give their lives for Ireland !
Well let’s just say, if they could look ahead to 2021, and see what became of their sacrifice, I am pretty positive they would have not been so keen to lose their lives in the pursuit of an independent republic. Just my immediate thoughts and of course many will disagree as is their right.
At minute 1:00 you can see very tall buildings in the background that aren't there anymore, is it the shot that it's making them look bigger or what happened to them?
I love the way the main thoroughfares in Dublin are still recognisable today as they where 100+ years ago, yes Dublin has changed a lot but it still holds on to the old city charm
Indeed and has been said, many of the buildings in O Connell St (Sackvile St) then shown, all disappeared in Easter 1916. And some further along on the northern end (beside the Gresham) would go during the opening of the terrible civil war that followed 5 years later.
Thank you to the brave men who removed that butchers apron from the GPO. How long may the fight for Irish freedom continue in the 6 counties. Brits out.
A new government should be put in place and stand loyal to the beliefs of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. There are nothing more than traitors and sell outs in the Government today.
I agree 100%, but its not gonna happen anytime soon, do you think the EU is going to let it? 80% of our rules are made in Brussels. As much as it pains me to say this, if the EU referendum is voted on to leave the EU, then NI will probably have more sovereignty than the Republic sadly. And at least you guys still have your fighting spirit, the Celtic Tiger killed the Republic's.
Sorry to lazy to read all of that comment its boring as fuck. I got the jist of it a bit something about your father giving information to brits during the war for independence?
Great choice of music. A bike heaven..although the cobble stones must have been tricky..The trams look futuristic for the time...its a pity we messed up the city and lost its charm, turned O Connell st in to a fast food and drug den.... Dublin on the rare owld times..
So interesting to see Dublin 100 years ago exactly and the british flag over the GPO in Dublin's O'Connell street and little did the brits know what was going to happen the following year in 1916 with the Easter Rising and Nelson's pillar facing the GPO that was blown up by the I.R.A in 1966, from the ashes arose the phoenix and a terrible beauty was born. 11/1/2015. Irish time 15:41 . Sunday.
I enjoyed that...thank you. An excellent historical record.. The people going about their business.. the buildings... It had some grandeur about it... the 'bobby' at the bank... (then parliament if memory serves me correctly?)
Damauri Dreved Of course they are not gone completely they still occupy the north eastern side of our country so obviously that still bothers me a lot.
@@Lar308 We're not occupying Northern Ireland! Northern Ireland has the legal right to call a referendum to leave the UK if they wanted to. They have had 23 years to call that referendum and they haven't! It's not like Nazi occupied France, We're not torturing them and not forcing them to stay in our union! Were not occupying Northern Ireland. Check your facts before you make such accusations!
Yeah. Now we have Ukrainian flags, EU flags and rainbow flags everywhere and you'd be hard pressed to find a tricolour or a native Irish person in the city centre. Talk about out of the frying pan.......
+Foxtrot Hotel Jervis street hospital its still there just added onto with a multi story carpark, but the building itself is huge its from about 1886 and if you look at it as you approach from across the square you can see its huge size
Foxtrot Hotel well the carpark was added on in the 90,s but the original building is still there on Jervis st ..its a huge building and very big for a building of its time in Ireland , like the Guinness storehouse they were copying the American high rises of the time in scale and architecture the Jervis looks like an old American office building from the late 1880,s and your welcome ;-)
PART 2: When claimed Dublin stopped growing and the British left is a completely false and ridiculous, when this was filmed towns such as Tallaght were in the countryside, now they are very modernise and in the Heart of Dublin. The part that I find most humorous is when you claimed Ireland is in "permenant recession", yes Ireland is in the midst of a recession now, so is the whole world including Britain, did you never hear of the celtic tiger era? Ireland was ranked 4th in GDP in Europe.
