The Read. 📖 Dublin Port Memories.
The coined name of the area designated to the employment of men for work on cargo ships in Dublin Port. Each morning, a hundred or more men would gather for this selection or 'read' to be chosen for a days work - hailing from any and all areas surrounding the port as well as the city itself. The first read began between twenty past seven and half past seven each morning, although much of the crowd had travelled from far & wide to be there earlier. We take a walk down memory lane with former Dockers Paddy Daly, Paddy Nevins and Paddy Behan who bring the story of this historical port tradition to life.
