Nice to see someone in Ireland pointing this out. But I think there's more reason than just safety when it comes to choosing not to cycle in Ireland. Because so few people cycle, there aren't that many GOOD bikes available on the used market, meaning if people endeavor to try it out, it involves buying a decent new bike at full price (or some shite from Smyths Toys). Then there's also the issue of reputation and clout. People in Ireland love their cars. It's a status symbol, and for many is the most valuable thing they own. I moved from Co. Clare to Germany 3 years ago, and when people hear I now ride a bike instead of drive a fancy Audi like I did in Ireland, it's like they are confused and feel sorry for me. People just don't get it, in the mind of the average Irishman bikes are a toy for children and nothing more. The only way cycling is going to take off in Ireland is if the stigma were to somehow reverse, like maybe bikes became super trendy... I guess Conor McGregor would have to start riding around on a Grifter or something, then all the 'lads' would follow suit.

Before the 1970s, The Netherlands wasn't the cycling paradise we know it as today (granted it was still safer than anywhere else at the time). But it really wasn't until the 70s when the Dutch government saw too many pedestrians and cyclists being killed by cars on their roads. Their government then made a decision to legislate for bike lanes and footpaths to be wide, and protected by curbs. They were motivated by reducing fatalities - not by worrying about the status symbols of the middle class. And it has paid off beautifully imo. I visited Amsterdam for the first time this year and I've never felt so safe as a cyclist. It was like a dream. But back to Dublin. Once cycling becomes more accessible to everyone, I'm sure the bike market will naturally blossom in proportion. Not to mention that you can already buy multiple new bikes for the cost of an average car. (Also without the added cost of fuel, road tax, insurance, getting a license, etc.) If people can afford a gas guzzling car, they can afford a bike. No question. I understand cars can be useful for longer journeys sometimes, but there's really no excuse for so many cars in the city centre, this video really gets that point across too. And yes, I respect your opinion. While there does seem to be a stigma around cycling in Ireland, there won't be if it becomes the norm. Peace ✌️

Safety is one of the reasons why I rarely cycle now but a huge reason is slow to change traffic lights. Even pedestrians are going mad waiting at lights. If they change every few seconds thats good for cyclists, good for pedestrians and bad for cars. If an elderly person is crossing while the lights change others must wait. Smart lights would also help.

Paris has achieved so much in a few years, as have other cities like Valencia while Dublin stumbles along with its cycling infrastructure. It's time to have an evidence led approach to urban design, and to stop pandering to the selfishness and baseless objections of the car-centric mob.

I've tried to swap all my short car rides for bike rides. It's healthier, more fun and it lifts my mood. I can't ever remember actually enjoying driving a car - traffic sucks and they're fairly disconnected from the outside world! With the improvements to bike infrastructure I can even bring my kids with me on routes with protected bike infrastructure which is more fun than having them bored out of their minds in the back of the car. Turns out a bike is also a better way to commute than using my old motorbike. The motorbike was / is fun but it sucks getting struck in traffic and competing for space. I suggest any of those complaining about bikes to just give it a try. You might even like it.

Safe place to lock your bicycle, No road taxes, change the stupid law for electric bicycle which says if you use throttle you're classified to MVP there are people like for example me which have bicycle and my bicycle it's limited to 25 km 🤷 not anyone it's able to buy bicycle for €4,000 which have special pedal assists. Hire are people who have problems with legs and also would like to cycling, fix the roads from potholes. Not to 15min City's. And remove the stupid gates from park's which are totaly useless and only annoying anyone. Then people's probably change the habits and start cycling. And also change the speed limit 25km to 30km for electric bicycle but not for electric scooters. Typical kovalski cycling around 35km to 40km faster than the 25km on nonelectric bicycle 🤷

Dublin City is basically 15min city already. Very accesible with public transit in most areas. Making improvements to active travel infra is good mate. Touch grass❤
