Auto-Tune Jesus Typically you do not play. Players keep their mouths close to the mouthpiece to give the illusion that they're playing, but they usually do not play. The point is to do choreographs that can involve in injury and damage to the instruments.
Lol everyone is like "meh they didn't play" but that's cuz there more to being in band (or marching band) than just playing your instrument. At football games the trombones at my school do that and we call it suicide cuts, so as a trombone player I can understand what the title of the video means and appreciate it. I thought what they did was awesome and it's nice to see the section come together to plan and preform that.
As a trombone player I’ve seen this and we don’t do this. It’s nearly impossible to get proper sound while doing at a show or in the bleachers and in the end of the day, unless you can actually play properly while doing this, don’t do this at all. Btw these guys aren’t even trying, just look at the third guy on the left.
+MyTube6444 its called suicides, there is a line of trombones on goes and stays down while the person next to them swings their trombone over their head next the people standing up swining turn their trumbones so they are now forwards and the people slumped stand up and then the swining people duck and the previous "duckers" swing but they changed it up a bit
+CreepersTKOED Bro a real suicide is when all the players play at once and then they all stop except for one who does a solo. Then it is rinse and repeat as they go down the line. This is not a suicide. This is swinging your horn around like an idiot to dubstep.
Elinymous I'm a teen, and I pay the trombone and respect the talent of playing it. Don't group us all into that horrid show of whatever those kids just did.
I agree. I went to this marching band competition where there was this marching band who had a great show and got first place, and also relied a lot on technology. The band concentrated mainly on the show and making it appealing to the audience's eyes, not their ears, and the music is kind of the key aspect of marching band. I still don't understand why they got first place. Their show was great, but it seemed like they only focused on the appearance and not the other stuff. Plus they relied a lot on technology like for the bass and certain sounds, but that's sort of the point of the actual instruments.
as a brass player I must say I was intrigued by the title thinking that it would be about a line of trombonists making their own dubstep as that one violinist did I was misled and waisted 1 48 of my life
Definitely none, they moved so slow. About 8 people from our band does a faster version of this at football games and I've only seen 1 person get hit over the past 4 years.
The whole time I was thinking, "oh my god, if someone messes up, the trombone is dead." Checked the comments, everyone was freaking out about the kids... smh a true band person right here.
Ah shot this was my freshman year I was one of few that was upset that they changed this it used to be faster and more upbeat and a bit more difficult to pull off but the factuality got involved and made them do dubstep and ruined the entire act
I've seen a lot of comments complaining about how they're not playing, so I, a trombone player learning suicides, am just going to say this You don't play during suicides, in fact, you're supposed to keep the mouthpiece a small distance from your mouth, so that you don't literally knock your teeth out. I've also been told to keep the slide lock ON while doing these so that it doesn't go flying. I also think it would be much easier to hit the people next to you with your slide out. Ergo, playing during a suicide line is not typically done, for both the safety of the trombonists and their instruments.
I'm a string player all the way (cello) and I must say, I absolutely LOVE watching really good bone suicides and really good drumlines. The precision needed for these groups is phenomenal. Always fascinating! Well done guys!
Never been in band or known anyone who talked about it, so I had no idea what a "suicide" was until I read these comments. Having a hard time wrapping my head around the concept. So, you use your instrument, but you don't actually play it? Why even have the instrument involved at all?
Because the point of this video makes total sense: using objects that make sound for eye appeal, though they were made to appeal to the ear, not the eye. Like you said delicious taffy, what is the actual point of having instruments if your not gonna even use them? I bet you those "trombone players" aren't even trombonists, they just borrowed the trombones to create cancer.
As a trombone player myself, my section does suicides during a song called call out since our part is easy to play. It's just for fun, and it really truly is
At our homecoming football game, while we were playing for student section, we turned one of the tenor players upside down and had him play one of the cadences. The student section went f***ing wild.
Nerd Word You're obviously lying about yourself playing while doing suicides, because a trombone can't go past 2nd position while looking at the ground, so try again. The only way a trombone would be able to play is if it is all in first position.
trombone suicides, in marching band visuals at least, never have the trombones playing. The movement would ruin their embouchure and unless they're giants all they could play would be arpeggios since the slide would hit the ground.
Suicides can be seen as a chereography routine. It's about trust, coordination, and teamwork. Maybe it was "disappointing" to realize that they actually weren't playing their instruments, but the point was to see that they have trust and teamwork by doing this perfectly. It's actually quite impressive; I can't believe comments are so underrating.
What's funny to me is how the ENTIRE comment section is complaining about how the trombones didn't play a note like they didn't know this visual or something. Our trombones do this exact same thing when we play our cadence Jamaica and even they don't do as cool of a guillotine as these dudes. Props.
Why are people so impress by this? As an instrumental lover, it's not impressive. All they're doing is just dancing with trombones for a minuet. The worst part is that they're not even playing it.
They're not supposed to be playing, sort of hard to play dubstep on a trombone hun. The impressive part is the "dancing", or really how synchronized it is, and how much time they had to put in to pull this off without getting hit in the face. But I'm sure you'll only understand the true talent of this when you learn how to type proper grammar.
A Nerd I know that they really worked hard for this, this isn't just a simple dance move that anyone can pull off. I just thought it could've been better if they played a song while dancing, but I do now realize how hard it is. The thing I don't agree with you is my grammar. I only missed one error on my grammar, and that is the fact that that I didn't put an ed on impressed. I am truly sorry hun, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings over a dance. I guess I just didn't see the true work at first. I am also sorry for that one grammar mistake, hun. Even though there are people with worse grammar than mine, making way more mistakes, I am truly sorry hun.
+Elinymous True, true. Our trombones must be terrible then because I've yet to see anything near this happen in weeks :/ I respect the creditable source too :) "
When I first saw the Bandanas I though "Oh, theyll probably take them off at one point and play, but then I realized they were just looking up down left and right and pretty much nothing else... The highlight of the show is the introduction.
I was thinking of how in sync they all are and how much practice they did. and now I'm just smiling to myself thinking about how many times they have whacked each other in the face.
again...you cant play on suicides. my friend tried. her lip got cut because she was keeping track of her positions instead of how far she went down. and again, anything above 2 position on trombone during suicide would hit the ground. suicide is purely for visual.
Okay so you don't know what a marching band suicide is. Basically you do movements with your instrument and sometimes you play sometimes you dont. Dubstep is very good for suicide ruitines and youd probably fuck it up alot of times if you didnt know what the hell you were doing. Hence suicide
This entire comment section should be ashamed of themselves. They’re just kids. And even if they were adults, you have no right to ever, *ever* say that what something someone did is not enough. This trombone section practiced hard for this performance, and you just want to come over here and make fun of their accomplishment. Shame. On. You.
It seems people don't understand what a Trombone Suicide is. It isn't meant to demonstrate one's ability to play the instrument in a classic manner. Suicides are derived from marching band which is a whole lot more about visuals than concert band. Suicides are meant to look cool and are fun to be a part of (I would know as a soon to be senior in HS who's marched for four years). Stop judging a fish by its ability to climb a tree, the title said dubstep suicides, and the video matches it perfectly. (Note: I never said there was anything wrong with playing classical concert music/style. Just appreciate the diversity of band. Where I come from you have to be good at all of it to be considered good.)
i agree, however on an unrelated note (excuse the pun), do you have any idea why the jazz it's called a trombone 'suicide'? It doesn't make any sense...
NickLyaǩælþö Iŋgræþö Because trombones hurt, a lot, especially when you stand up too soon and get smacked in the back of the head, or face, but a very fast moving trombone slide.
I play trombone, and I'm only a beginner ((11 weeks)) and my teacher says that since we're one of her best class, she says we'll probably get to do this if we learn well enough
If you don't know what a trombone suicide is let me save you from an idiotic comment like "Why didn't they play their instrument? If you want to show skill, play it." Well first of all a trombone suicide is a marching technique, second of all trombone suicides take practice although this one was a mediocre one since they went quite slow, it takes practice, trust in another to not hit them, and skill to do a trombone suicide, and lastly playing in the trombone is like suicide for your teeth along with injuring many other people because of the slide moving (unless they played while in a single angle, switching, then playing again, then the slide wouldn't be a problem)
For the none band people, think about what they just did. They spent their time, most likely after school, to do this thing. Now, I don't know if you play an instrument, but if you want to make sound, you need to buzz. Well if you are jerking your instrument around, you can't really make a sound. All you get is cracked notes that sound like a train falling off a cliff. Not to include, they are focusing on making sure they don't hurt each other, so that another mental thing to focus on. Also, there's music playing, so there it is. If you think this is so easy then you go do it. Also remember that you are putting your health in someone else hand and you can't mess because you can seriously hurt someone. So once again, to all none band people, or the little middle school band, this is actually impressive. They did this infront of their whole school, which takes a lot of guts. So I'm not disappointed in this, I was actually wow at this.
Sincerely Nikki Id rather not go and learn some 'drill' because in my opinion, playing the trombone is about actually playing the trombone. Also, this has nothing to do with marching - they are not marching - this is about standing on the spot, and quite frankly doing nothing productive whatsoever. Furthermore I have to disagree about 'two sides to a band' , as most bands are not marching bands.
101sunfish Here let me help you with that The fucking video title is: *"Dubstep Trombone Suicide"* Tell me where that implies they'll be playing, if you're up to it. Even tell me where that says they'll march. If you can.
KingHalbatorix It tells me none of those things. What it does tell me is that some trombones are going to commit suicide while listening to dubstep music.
This is a tradition at my highschool. Where they are doing this is my highschool. Personally, this is the most boring thing to watch during our pep assemblies.
i agree to an extent yea it would have been cool if they played the song and did the coreography but you know how highschool boners are haha. (haha i called em boners)
Did you notice the video is called "dubstep trombone suicide". It's specifically to showcase their ability to execute suicides. Maybe they played the trombones at another time not shown in this video. Goodness have a heart.
You hating because you can't do this, shit I not even a brass player but I am in the drumline and when I see shit like this I give respect especially to high schoolers
PS clearly the world has no idea what "suicides" are. It's a common practice, yes it's choreography. No you don't play during a suicide. That would be... suicide. Lol
Shaun Kahler but it's shitty garbage that would make people back then (when there was actually good classical music) want to kill themselves. Honestly, the commenters are the ones who are right about the whole idea. It's shit! End of story! It makes me as a trombone player want to stab myself in front of their school so I could atleast stain their shitty school before I die.
***** trombone suicides are retarded because this is what it takes for people to start respecting the band. We didn't do crap like this and we got replaced with a DJ. You're literally doing the job of the Color Guard and risking your instruments/teeth to do so.
To those of you criticizing: 1) No they were not playing. Although this was a slow trombone suicide, in most cases playing while performing a suicide is nearly impossible because of centrifugal force. Their slide would literally be carried off their instrument and possibly cause an injury. Not to mention pitch, tone quality, and embouchure as well as other factors would be affected by the movement of the instrument. 2) This does take talent and practice. If you don't believe me, attempt a trombone suicide. It looks easy until you're the one who get's off-beat and ends up with a broken nose. 3) This is a demonstration of a marching technique that requires accuracy and dexterity. Is it stupid and dangerous? Yes. But so are many circus acts that have been around for centuries. If it wasn't challenging you guys would be complaining too. I am a trombone player and I have performed suicides with my friends. Even if it's dumb and dangerous, it's super fun to know you can pull it off. So this is my little note to those of you criticizing. Thanks!
for anyone that thinks this is gay or a useless piece of crap should really rethink what they're watching. It may not be 5 star choreography but it's a bunch of trombone players (maybe) that are being cheered on by the ENTIRE SCHOOL. I know being a trombone player in my high school, no one gave two thoughts about what we did or accomplished. So stop judging it for what you see on the screen and bullshating ur way through comments. Ill be proud to show you how i can play if u need to hear someone do that too, because there are too many complaints about that.
kyle knox Yeah, it sucks that you have to do stupid shit like this to get recognition. I'd be perfectly fine sitting back in the bleachers playing marches and pep songs. If I had to visit the dance teacher for basketball season, I would have quit band.
Theres so many comments saying that they're trombonists and they play during suicides or complaining that they didn't play, and I'd just like to say, let people enjoy something and stop complaining.
+MrDarthGravy it's mostly just a marching thing. If you get off beat you get hit in the face. I play trombone as well and we didn't actually make this year's rookies do it(to be honest some of them shouldn't be in marching, most of them are not very mature and cry about everything)but we demonstrated it in our sectionals occasionally. I do think the dubstep thing is stupid though.
Ok, I play trombone and have for about 6 years and I think it's cool, so stop hating. They're just trying to have fun so stop trying to hate just cause you know you could never do anything like this.
I agree that was awesome good thing no one went out of tempo one year someone in my marching band forgot to lock their slide and they did suicides their slide flew
Im reading these comments and Im confused... Everyone seems to hate the fact they didnt play. But well im curious, i liked how choreographed they were (as someone who tried choreographing people/and has given up/ in theater). But what exactly is in band terms "Suicide"? Comments arent clear. Can someone please clarify this for me?
