The Ducati Panigale 1199 continues the great tradition of sophisticated, fantastically capable and utterly gorgeous superbikes from Bologna. But do you need all that engine capacity? Can its younger sibling, the 899 Panigale, not do everything just as well with less? Mat and Clinton argue it out.

Sorry about 480p broadcast quality; this was a video from last year which I only just found so I thought I'd stick it up anyway. As soon as we find the HD version, I'll replace this one.

I don't think you looked hard enough for the HD Version.... I work in Video here in the states and to find an HD Version is EASY!!! If you didn't plan on updating an HD Version, why keep us drooling?

I believe the 899 has a steeper rake, thus smaller wheelbase and much easier to chuck left and right

I have an 2014 899. I came off a 2012 R1. Obviously, I am making a comparison between an inline 4 and a v twin, two totally different motors. But I have to say that the 899, at least to me, feels like it pulls alot harder than my R1 did. Under heavy and I do mean heavy acceleration, the 899's front wheel comes up alot quicker and sooner than it did on the R1. The power on the 899 is much more usable than the R1 and that seems to make it feel faster. All in all, I am not sorry at all for trading in the R1. I have not ridden the 1199 or the 1299. But I am honestly having too much fun on the smaller Panigale.

+Edwin Hallett I had an '09 R1 and I think I'd 100% be faster around the track on my 899 (never did any track riding with the R1). I've taken the 1199 and 1299 for some test rides and they're super fun (especially the 1299 with the auto blipper downshifts) but for the extra $10K for just the base model once you factor in depreciation, I just can't justify it right now. Kind of annoying the 959 just came out two years later but test riding one of those a couple weeks ago, I barely noticed a difference to be honest. I think my 899 is going to be a permanent fixture for me until they come out with a 959 EVO or S.

Something is up with your comment. Either you don't have the skill to push the R1 and you feel more comfortable pushing the 899 or something was wrong with your R1. You put a pro rider on both of them and I guarantee his lap time is much better on the R1. Don't get me wrong I have owned two R1's and two different ducatis. I had a 848 that was an amazing bike but did not hold a chance in hell at competing with my R1. Even with the extra 20-30 hp the 899 has over my 848 it would not mater in the slightest. My favorite make is Ducati but Yamaha makes some nice bikes. They ruined the R1 with the styling lately for me. To be honest I think the R1 is way to crazy for simply street riding but I have had two lol. I could only assume its the same for the ducati's. I bet the 1199 is overkill but its what I am currently looking for.

Love 'em both, but for me it would have to be the 899. Being a smaller guy, a novice, even the 899's 148hp is waaaaay too much power than what I can find to do with but it makes it more manageable than its bigger sister, and a more every other day kinda bike. I'd have loved to see an 899 S or R with single-sided swingarm, ohlins, CF bits, but Ducati have opted to take it to 955ish for 2016. Now this awesome, less intimidating middle-weight is basically gonna be a litre bike..

Whats hilarious to me is every single person that says it doesn't have enough power doesn't have the balls to pin the throttle in one snap on first gear lmao. The 899 is also Faster then the 1199 0 to 100km/h.

If you are going to buy a 899 Panigale, you might as well just take the leap and buy the 1299 Panigale. Firstly, the 1299 Panigale doesn't cost much more and for it you get a huge upgrade in not only performance but quality of parts. The 899 might look similar but the materials used is far lesser of quality, even the PAINT for goodness sake (Doesn't come with clear coat).
