Welcome to Episode 2 of the Ducati 916 Restoration. In todays episode I finish stripping the frame and get it built back up into a rolling chassis
Now before i go on with my description I'll just drop in the link to my Patreon account and you can check that out if you'd like - / rrcrestoration
So onto the description as i said above, first job to do was strip the frame completely of all its fixings, padding, bearings and whatever else i could find in preparation for stripping the old paint, while i was taking things apart i thought it best to pull the bearings from the swing arm and remove the tyres from the rims too so as to do all the stripping at once.
Once all the parts were stripped i had no choice but to go old school with the frame as its too big for my sand blaster. Happily though all the other parts fit nicely into it.
So once everything was all blasted clean and any rust issues sorted out i primed all the parts with etch primer and while that was drying i set about mixing up the 2k high build primer. The parts were given 3 coats of primer and then left to cure. After curing i wet flat the primed parts to remove any defects that will show up in the final layers of paint.
Once washed and thoroughly dried the parts were painted with Ducati beige and the swing arm done with a colour matched grey this was then topped off with 5 layers of a semi-matte clear and left to cure.
With the painting done and dusted i set about plating all the hardware as you can see me explain in the video it was a case of stripping all of the old plating, dealing with the rust, polishing the parts and then replating then with zinc and then treating them with the appropriate colour of passivate.
Then it was simply a case of reversing the process and building the frame and stuff back up obviously fitting new bearings were required.
And that brings this episode to a close im afraid but i will be back again soon with the next one.
As usual i really hope you enjoy this series of videos and leave a like and a comment to let me know what you think.
Enjoy

So i thought id leave a little pinned comment here to clear up a few common questions i am getting concerning the restoration. Yes i know the swing arm is supposed to be anodized ( i spotted that while prepping it if you can believe such a thing! ) the reason for choosing paint over getting it anodized again goes back to the ATC restoration and the absolute NIGHTMARE it turned into not to mention the nearly 5 months of waiting to get the parts back so i just wasn't feeling brave enough to send out the swing arm incase i got a repeat of last time so that's why i chose to go down the paint route and as this bike will be mainly on display the fact that its a softer finish doesn't really matter. And speaking of the finish the arm was clear coated with matte clear but the lighting in my bay seems to reflect from it very strangely giving it the appearance of a semi-gloss but in natural light it looks perfect and the way Ducati intended it to look. Now onto the frame- It looks brighter well yes it would do now that the paint isn't 23 years old, faded , rusted, worn , covered in grease , grime, dead bugs and whatever else you can think of hitting it over the years so naturally its going to look brighter and not dull and lifeless. If you are familiar with all my other restorations i don't skimp on quality and my paints are matched as close as humanly possible to the original so yes it looks brighter but its IS the correct color. So i apologize for the length of the comment but i feel its important to clear these little issues up.
