So the story goes....
My Family including my dad whom is the owner of the Ducati were enjoying a warm holiday over in turkey.
Me being young and dumb found this to be the perfect opportunity to take his bike out for a joy ride. Unfortunately i kick the kickstand up but no enough so it fell back down againresulting in the crash as i go to turn left. yes i know i shouldn't have ridden it but i have ridden for many years, since i was 5. so its not like a lack of experience which caused it.
Now im putting this video on here for you all to see so that it may prevent other acts of stupidity for many who may find it to be a good idea to go for a spin on their ol' mans pride and joy.
The bike cost me little over £5000 to repair and is now once again road worthy. Money that could have gone and bought a track bike and been able to run it for more then a year rather then a 1 minute like i did on the Ducati.
Just like to say to you all, take care and remember to ride responsibly and learn from my expense.

The crash is unfortunate but the real funny part is how easily the bike fell apart once it hit the ground. Made me laugh out loud seeing all the red pieces all over the street. Take care.

Well done on posting the video and the explanation. I have to say I thought it was purely cold tyres when I first watched this but having read your explanation I just feel gutted for you. An expensive mistake and lesson learned I think. I haven't even read any of the other comments and I don't think I will as no doubt there are many know it all keyboard warriors ready to attack and you really don't need or deserve it. Stay safe.

I feel your pain lad, did the same thing with my Dad's Mercedes when I was underage for driving. To be honest, I wouldn't be a ducati fan, but that was painful to watch. Respect for putting it up though.

My duke stand pops up on its own so you have to remember that if you sit the bike up straight then change your mind and try to rest back on the stand. Unlike most bikes which you do have to physically pop up, cold tyres and lack of experience caused this one.

Nah, that was an oil leak caused that one, like he says in the description, was barely even turning, it just went.

WubWub I'm not buying the leak excuse. A leak would've only dripped a few drops of oil that would have become insignificant at that speed. Unless the "leak" was squirting oil straight at the rear wheel, that accident was more likely to be caused by carelessness or lack of skill from the rider.

kwacker45 Not cold tires, his kickstand hit the ground. You can even hear it when he goes over the metal covers, right before the rear steps out. Sliding around on cold tires isn't a death sentence and it's easy to control a slide caused by them.

i own this bike,a 996 sps,they have suicide side stands,its cold tyres,with the stones from the driveway thats done this,oh and maybe a little to much speed,glad he's ok though

Looks to me like he was going way too fast on a narrow road, saw a car on the left, locked up the brakes while turning right, rear suddenly grips and he highsides.

At least you didn't have to replace the fairings, lol. It's crazy how quickly these things come apart. When I work on my 748S, it only takes about 30 minutes to completely tear it down to frame and motor. Glad you're ok buddy, live and learn. Dad can always fix or replace his moto, but your life is so precious his world would be empty without you.

Ouch!!! Almost looks like you went too quick, cold tyres and target fixation rather than a kickstand. Either way, an expensive lesson. Thanks for sharing and glad you're not injured.

can even see the markings from the 3:00 minute mark of where there side stand contacted the road surface. you were flying for a very brief moment, glad all the gear you were wearing did its job.

i've never know a stand not to flip up properly. as soon as i hit it the trigger spring takes it all the way up, unless you stop it with your foot.

That wasn't oil. That was the kick stand. He doesn't put it up, and you can hear it scrape on the first (and only) left turn.

It's a pity, that bike is stunning. But it is very strange that the bike is not equipped with the sensor that turn the engine off if you try to insert the 1st gear while the kickstand is down.

You never put up the kickstand, you can see it's still down the second you changed gear. Also you can hear it make impact with the road when you do a small left turn just a second before you crash.

I'm not a big fan if all the interlocks and nannies on modern bikes, but back in the 70s I had several near wrecks due to setting off with the stand down. Sorry you got bit, and with such a nice looking bike. Shame.

Umm the crash was caused by the kick stand being down. You can see the mark on the road from it dragging and you can hear it dragging.

theres no way the stand came down, but they do have a fault, sometimes when the stand is down you can still set off, you seem to have found this out

That's fucked up! Pretty much feels like the first time I took my own bike for a ride. No riding lessons yet, but I thought i'd be able to do it. Crashed it within 300 meters because I shifted down in a corner and just released the clutch. About 10 mph but still.... the same 'nooo no, no, no, no'. hehe. Sucks but seems you learned from it!

Aren't bikes supposed to have a sensor that detects if the kickstand isn't fully up and prevents the bike being in gear if not?

Lol @ trying to blame it on an oil spill. You forgot to put up the kickstand. You can hear it scraping when you're about to crash and see the black streak it left on the road when you're walking it back.

Pretty sure the side stand should flip up when you lift the bike off of it. It used to be an idiosyncrasy amongst Italian bikes and I know the stand on the few Aprilias of the same vintage I owned would, as did one Ducati, and my father thinks it did on his 888

Robin Dufton +Robin Dufton At 0:37 the bike is already upright and the side stand hasn't retracted. Yes the 996 does have a 'auto' flip up stand but its commonly taken off as its more annoying than useful. Aexomer I guess if the side stand is meant to 'automatically' flip up then there was no need to install a factory kill switch?

colbrook91 Well if that's the case, it strikes me as being another reason not to buy an Italian made shitbox of a Ducati. It's a pretty elementary safety feature that's been present on every bike I've ever owned or ridden and it would have saved this individual and I guess possibly a fair few others a painful and expensive accident. Some people may accept is as an Italian idiosyncrasy but it strikes me as being an almost unbelievable oversight. With massive implications for rider safety.

and thats all because of stupid kickstand... btw it's unbeliveable when this bike shattered into pieces after this not dangerous crash. looks like his dad had lost every single screw :D 1. unscrew few bolts 2.leave keys in visible place 3. hope that son will take a ride in this simple 3 steps you'll get new (renovated) bike, enjoy :D

+windage with the fairings off, perhaps there were more fasteners also out and that is why the tail and tank left the bike so easily? Were you or someone else working on the bike before this ride?

No way that was the stand, I ride a 996 and they just don't stay down that well. I've left mine down a few times and if it catches it just flips up. They have a tenancy of staying back a little when you stand the bike up. Looks more like a little loose gravel or dirt or just plain bad riding on cold tyres!

Um, proving it is easy. Watch the fucking vid. He never puts it up before taking off. You can hear it scrape the ground. After crashing, you can SEE the mark on the road. It's conclusive provided you aren't blind, deaf or stupid. So maybe you missed it. Why would you try to bend the facts?

Um well... ok. Despite the fact that it's 100% conclusive by VIDEO FUCKING EVIDENCE, but since you're a Special Little Snowflake you want the uploader to confirm? It's in the description: "Unfortunately i kick the kickstand up but no enough so it fell back down againresulting[sic] in the crash as i go to turn left." Replacing it wouldn't be "conclusive evidence" to the cause of the crash. It would just conclusively prove it was replaced. It may not have been damaged at all beyond some minor scraping. On the foot. Where it contacts the ground. Derp.

When i was watching the vid without knowing the reason of the crash i was thinking: "What a Wombat riding that bike" ... until i read the part about the kickstand. Never mind all the stupid remarks of people riding ricers and Wallaroos, i've been riding Ducatis for over 20 years now and since they're so bad how come i see them more and more on our roads :-) ...

yea, attention lol, if he did wreck, he needs to start tightening parts down. I've been down over 80 and bike smashed into a wall and the tank still stays intact. the rear cowl also you can see has no cracks/breaks noticeable if it was forced off

I'm sorry this happened to you... just bad luck really. Good on you for taking responsibility. I hope your family, especially your dad, took that into consideration when trying to decide whether to kill you or not (JK). Seriously, I'm sure they were just so relieved and happy that you were ok. Would hardly call it inexperience, i didnt put the kick stand up correctly so it fell back down... could've happened on a cheap bike or unfortunately for me, an expensive one. shit happens

ThePizzaLife yeah but that's the point I'm making, Ducati stands just don't make you fall off, I've done it many times. They are light weight alloy and tend to fold back partly themselves. It looks more like cold tyres, too much confidence and mostly a terrible line that sees him go almost off the road and on to kerb! Whatever the reason, Muppet is the answer! Lol

If you rewatch the video, you never see or hear him kick the stand up after getting on the bike. You can even see the stand at :37 when he kicks down into 1st.
