With respect to price, I would say that the cheaper bikes tend to need more options fitted to make them as you'd want them and apart from an exhaust the Ducati is ready to go. I had a Scrambler (which is essentially the same bike, different styling) and when I bought it, I was also looking at a MT-07. I priced up both bikes and for the MT-07 once I had spec'ed the accessories was the same price as the Scrambler (which needed less accessories in my opinion to make it liveable). I hope that made sense :)
Is this any better than the 796 monster? They are both air cooled 803cc twins and after dropping the single sided swingarm and going with a dual swingarm it certainly doesn't look better. 796: 87 hp, 58 ft/lbs torque, 373 lbs dry (ABS model) 797: 75 hp, 50.8 ft/lbs, 386 lbs dry Why would anyone buy this over a leftover "old" model? Visordown need to do a comparo with both bikes
I'm in the market for a bike like this - a middle weight with a premium feel. Sporty enough, and more comfortable than the other monsters for my lanky frame. Test ride booked for tomorrow.
Yah, please report back here on your thoughts. I sat on one last week, very nice. Very well made and finished. Does feel more comfortable than 821 - particularly as no right foot bumping into exhaust issue, (as with 821). The only things against are lack of gear indicator and traction control, it should have both for this money. Also 821 replacement due next year with single swingarm etc.
I took the test ride. It is nice, good ergonomics (for me at 6'2). good brakes and nice sound from the exhaust. However, it isn't the bike for me. I had more fun on the triumph street scrambler, despite its lower power and greater weight.
I am looking at either the 797 or 821 as a first bike after 6 months commuting on a 125. Which would be better mainly for commuting? I would love the 797 but a bit put off with no fuel gauge or gear indicator. Given there is no t/c I'd be a bit worried about down shifting. Valid argument for the 821 or just needlessly worrying?
I'm still waiting for a logic explanation on the decision of bringing back what is basically the Monster 796, only with less power and less torque and without any more rider aids...
The engine was already being used in the Scrambler family so the development costs for the bike were minimal. It develops less power because it’s an air cooled engine that has to comply with the Euro 4 emission standard. Eliminating rider aids also keeps the cost down and caters to a nostalgic crowd. The original M900 Monster made similar power and had no aids or features to speak of. So there’s your answer, albeit two years too late...
No problem at all, it can cruise at highway/motorway speeds all day long. 75mph feels like the sweet spot for me regarding vibration, but you can easily cruise at 90mph+ all day long if needed.
Monster 796 was the last great air cooled "little" Monster from Ducati. More than enough power and torque and great styling with the single sided swing arm and undertail double barrel exhaust. 797 and even 821 feel... not up to par, they've lost the "soul".
The worst version of all Monsters... Sorry but check the stetic, in 696/796, the sub frame and all parts, was perfect cordinated. after in the 821, the bike became in something more heavy and difficult to drive. in this model, 797, definitely it feels the touch of VolksWagen group. lost many pieces, the famous italian design was changed for the cheapest and simple design. lost the sub frame. used the tubular to unit the whole bike, reduced many plastic parts, the shock absorber is practically outside of the motorcycle (maybe good in scrambler, not in monster).... and more and more.... Finally i'm proud to continue to keep my 696 2011 , the last model of pure Ducati , Before being acquired by VW group. (sorry for my bad English)
If was going to spend $9300 US, there are so many better choices than the 797. All that money and not even a gear position indicator or a fuel gauge. Come on Ducati!
I own both and feel uniquely qualified to speak to this haha. The MT-07 engine has a bit more punch, a bit more acceleration which is really really fun. The 797 is a much better handling bike with higher quality components, this is especially noticed when on a twisty road which I feel I can navigate faster on the Monster despite the slightly less powerful engine. It comes down to price and how much you value owning a Ducati. There are typically better deals to be found on an MT-07 and if you can find one it's really hard to justify the Monster. But the Ducati is beautiful especially with an aftermarket exhaust installed!
@@TheCooopersmith I had 2 scramblers and I like the character of the L twin desmodue. Ducati were the best turning bikes I had. I think their brakes and suspension are superior than the MT-07...if I go for the MT-07 I will add ohlins front and rear and akrapovic exhaust. So there won't be a price difference in the end...And Ducati offer a slipper clutch...
@@alpap1980 the slipper clutch is nice on the Monster, for sure! I catch myself sometimes hopping on the MT-07 and having to remind myself to be careful with aggressive downshifts. My MT-07 has a full system, ECU tune, and the air box snorkel removed so that likely accounts for some of the difference in acceleration and power between the two. My Monster ECU is currently out for a Rexxer flash and remap to go along with my de-cat slip on (Scorpion) exhaust and the recently install K&N high flow air filter. If I remember I'll let you know how the two compare once the ECU flash is done. The brakes and suspension on the Monster are miles ahead of the MT and unlike the Scrambler (I believe) the Monster has dual disc Brembos as opposed to the single disc on the Scrambler. The brakes are pretty phenomenal on the Monster and the suspension is far superior.
@@alpap1980 definitely the MT-07. The handlebars on the MT-07 are higher and closer to you (more swept back) but they are also narrower. I actually installed 2" bar risers on my Monster which made a huge difference. The bars on the monster feel much wider and are now at a similar height to the MT-07, but still positioned a bit farther away from the rider. So stock the MT-07 is much more upright but after the bar risers were installed on the Monster it is now nearly as upright.
Easy isn't it. Sitting there criticising the reviewer. Where do you people get the idea your opinion is worth anything. The modern age, where everyone is an expert. Subscribe or unsubscribe.
Yuck im so disappointed, i have a 2017 SV650 and im looking for an upgrade. I looked at the m1100 and m796. Both amazing bikes but getting old now. I love the classic air cooled designs but the 797 missed its target. If it made the same power, same weight and single sided swing arm id buy it. I wish ducati would make a lightweight, mid range bike with ohlins suspension. Most of us that ride street dont need 150hp, we want a sharp handling bike to tackle twisty roads. The 797 has no soul. Ducati fix it.
What to they do to all VD staff to make you speak in a this strange broken sentence way. It's like you've all been trained to talk like someone's recorded you saying a load of words and then separately they've spliced them together you form semi coherent phrases. Oh and the "funny" video starts, aren't.
