2015 Ducati Scrambler Test Ride www.revzilla.co... Common Tread's own Sean MacDonald gets his shot at testing one of the most anticipated bikes for 2015. We have been chomping at the bit to get our hands on this motorcycle. In a world of liquid-cooled engines Ducati's classic air cooled 90 degree V-Twin is used to keep this bike true to its classic roots. Ducati gives you vintage inspired styling available in four different packages from the factory.

Way back when in the California deserts there was a type of racing called Hare Scrambles. The race bikes were called scramblers. They were usually modified European bikes (BSA, Triumph, Matchless, CZ, Bultaco, Greeves) but then some other manufacturers decided to market a Scrambler factory made bike to cash in on this common name. Ducati, Honda, Yamaha and others all marketed Scramblers and they were usually just their street model with high pipes, high handlebars, different fenders and not much else. Maybe knobby tires. They were not very good as dirt bikes but they were one more option to choose from. Flash forward 50 years. The styling of this new Ducati is very similar to the old Ducati Scrambler singles from the late 60s / early 70s. It is obviously meant as a retro bike. Some people will like the styling and some will not. If you do not like this style, go find a bike you do like. That is why we have choices. Be thankful you do not live in the old USSR where if you were lucky enough to be able to afford a bike there was only one model available. A review like this one is aimed at people who are interested in this motorcycle. They want to know if it is comfortable, fits small people or large, corners well, handles bumps, has adequate power, etc, etc....... As an architect I obviously feel the question of style is an important one. However, as with all bikes, some will like the style and some will not. Posting "this bike is UGLY" is your opinion and adds nothing to the dialogue on the merits of this motorcycle. And kinda makes you look stupid. Try to avoid looking stupid. Have a nice day!

a lot of new riders start out focusing on only the type of bike that their friends ride, usually something with a lot of plastic on it. That's cool, I started on Ninjas. Over time you learn to appreciate other types of bikes. At 47, now I am totally into Naked Streetfighters, especially Twins. I would have loved the Scramblers of the 60s, I would have been all about them had I been born in the right time frame. This new Duck Scrambler looks fantastic, only thing I can "ding" it on is displacement.. I would interested if it was 1100cc-1200cc's. I bet that is what comes out next.

Guys just a suggestion here......have Sean or whoever is doing the test riding inform us about his riding gear for that particular day; jacket, gloves, pants, helmet, etc. And then put some popups on the screen so that we can go to Revzilla and see the item in your store. It helps us to see the gear and the bike in action and may move some people to purchase. Sean does a good job on his reviews and it is fun to get a vicarious thrill riding the new bikes. P.S. we don't need to know what underwear he's selected! ;>)

My dilemma is a little weird, I guess. I'm between the Ducati Scrambler and the Triumph Bonneville. I would use either to get to work on a busy city (Rio de Janeiro). The Ducati seems more stylish and more of a performer, but the Triumph oozes heritage. Help?
@anxiousappliance
@anxiousappliance 9 лет назад
The Ducati is a modern motorcycle with modern dynamics, and is cheaper. The Triumph is over a hundred pounds heavier and pretty crude. Any heritage it exudes is simulated.

Hahaha, I guess people used the built in translator to get you, got your back jack...hahaha. Anyway, I'm a motocross rider, so as you may figure out, I'm screwed in the head and I can't get a bike with lots of power or a motard because I would be wheeling my way around town and trying moves that should be done only in a motocross track. That said, the Triumph is more calm and the Ducati is more fun, so I would be misbehaving more on the Ducati. And yes, the gringos don't have a clue how fucked up is traffic in Rio. It is like India with a little less cars...hahaha. Anyway, any of these bikes would be good for my get around town. Probably not the best, but good enough. Thanks to all for replying. Best regards!

@ifrit35
@ifrit35 9 лет назад
alexlambert Before this bike I had a cb 500 with fairing. So yes, the first and second time I rode mine it felt like I was sitting on the tank. Not because it's unstable but because your field of view is very open, you don't see the headlight because it's very low, so you see more of the road. Also the motorcycle is short and very light. It feels lively. But I got used to it and feels a lot better than my cb500. I encourage you test ride one, and the others I mentioned. Especially the ER6.

This or a Yamaha FZ-07? Two completely different bikes I know, but they're in a similar price range and they're the two bikes I'm trying to decide on. I like that the scrambler can handle a bit of light off-roading, but the fz-07 seems like more of a long term bike. I'm coming from a zx6r if that makes any difference in recommendations. I want something less serious and more city oriented.
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 9 лет назад
Eric Marlette To me, the FZ-07 feels like a 3/4-sized bike. It's really compact. The Scrambler is compact but feels like a full-sized bike. You'll definitely have more tire choices with the FZ-07's standard 17 inch wheels, as there aren't many options for the Scrambler's 18 inch front wheel. What makes the FZ-07 seem more long-term to you? -DrewZilla

RevZilla No not really a visitor to that forum. I live in UK where supermotos and this type of bike are ideal as the paved roads are so bad. Good to get off the main roads and take the country lanes... less traffic and more fun without hitting high speeds. This bike is obviously pretty stable if you can use the stick a lot! I also like V twins so this engine in a scrambler/tracker style bike is ideal. The only bad aspect I see with this bike is the short mudguards/fenders. I know it's trendy to have no fenders these days, and if you live in California its fine, in the UK though it would be a pain getting covered in mud!

@stopthemadness99 9 лет назад
The Duke is significantly lighter and an overall smaller bike, while making a similar amount of torque. I have yet to ride the Scrambler, but I've demo'd a Duke before, and it was awesome. The thing pulls like a train and is easy to crank over into turns. However, it's running a large-displacement single cylinder engine, and even with a well-designed counterbalancer (which it has), the vibration is obnoxious after about 20 minutes around town. At highway RPMs, it would be even worse, especially if you're used to riding really smooth engines like an inline four or a well-designed twin. If you plan on only doing urban commuting and/or short jaunts through the twisties, you'd probably prefer the Duke. If you plan on doing longer rides and freeway cruising, I'd go with the Scrambler.

Ok guys need some advice here as its a choice between this on and the Triumph Street Twin. Scrambler has no traction control and is air cooled. I've been riding bikes for 32 years and any air cooled bike I have ever owned has blown gaskets. With its small frame, would any of you guys be afraid of this bike blowing an engine cause that's what would hold me back in buying one of these. Opinions please.

I wouldn't be too worried about the Scrambler, but then again, maintenance should be way easier on the Street Twin. -DrewZilla

Hi Sean What size of Jacket you wearing on this video? I'm going to order same one for myself. You posted you're 6-1 previously. But i believe you never mention about your weight. Your height and weight looks like as same as mine. I really like this jacket looks on your video. Thank you very much.
@RevZilla

inreach38 It's the Union Garage Robinson Jacket. Take your chest measurement wearing just a t-shirt. 37-39 inches is size small, and 39.5-41.5 inches is size medium. If your similar to Sean, you're likely one of those two sizes. -DrewZilla

RevZilla Do you think a beginner who takes the MSF course could handle the Ducati Full Throttle as a starter bike? I wouldn't be riding it crazy or pushing it to its limits. I'm 6'1, 150lbs.

Cracked Statues Personally, I tend to recommend starting on a 250, but the Scrambler seems so easy to handle that you'd probably be fine. Just go easy when you twist your wrist! -DrewZilla

Wife is 5-8, I am 6-2. How will the taller rider feel on this bike. We are waiting for this to see, or it will be the Bonneville T100.
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 9 лет назад
That's a great question, SparksMagoo! ***** explains below: "At six feet, one inch tall, I fit surprisingly well on the bike. The pegs are placed perfectly, and my only complaint was that the bars felt a little too swept back and left me feeling a little cramped, in terms of reach. Luckily, this is about the easiest problem to fix on a motorcycle, especially when you consider that simply rotating the bars forward could be enough. The higher bars do fit with the Scrambler theme and come in handy for stand-up riding if you do venture off the pavement." I appreciate that feedback. I will wait then. I think the bike is perfect for couples who are just looking for a bike to get around town and some back road, dirt road riding here in eastern PA. After a lifetime of riding around the entire country, dirt, deserts, highways, we want a 40 mile bike that is simply "FUN" to hop on and run around for an hour . Thanks Sean!

RevZilla Another possible solution regarding the handlebars is the Full Throttle's "lower flat track inspired handlebar" (Ducati's description). This may prove to be a better fit for those of us with longer arms.

+Paul Mitchell It has really usable power, but you're right that it still might be a bit too much power for a first bike. You may want to start on a 250-300 class bike before moving up to the Scrambler. -DrewZilla

how does it compare to a ktm 690 duke r? because i think the ktm makes the same amount of power, but i believe the ktm is a bit lighter? which one would you chose and why?
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 8 лет назад
The Scrambler is a bit heavier, but it's easier to ride and better for newer riders. The Duke is more aggressive and high-strung, so it's a better choice if you've already been riding for some time. If I were getting a first bike, I'd get the Scrambler or even a smaller 300cc class bike. Since I've been riding for more than a decade, I'd go for the Duke. -DrewZilla

Hey guys, great informations as usual! I'm looking to buy my first bike and have been going back in forth through the reviews and comments on the following 2 bikes : Ducati Scrambler, Triumph Street Twin. Thoughts about which would be the best for a first bike ?
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 8 лет назад
For a first bike, you're probably better off with a smaller 300-class bike, but if you're set on either the Scrambler or the Street Twin, the Scrambler is a bit lighter, while the Street Twin has longer service intervals. If you can, go sit on both. -DrewZilla
@ChaosOfSpartan
@ChaosOfSpartan 8 лет назад
I'm doing the same thing right now. Looking between both bikes and trying to figure out which one to get as a first bike. I have gotten a chance to sit on the street twin which feels really nice but I haven't gotten to sit on the Scrambler yet. My thoughts so far is that I like how far apart the service is on the Street Twin but not a big deal for me cause I live very close to a Ducati dealer. The things that stand out on the Street Twin is the liquid cooling and more classic clock style speedo but I really wish it had a Tachometer. So far it seems to me the Ducati has faster pickup and looks a bit more sporty. I'm going to go sit on a Scrambler this week and hopefully get a better idea as to which I like better. I'm 50/50 right now as I really love both bikes. I think the important thing to remember is that it won't be the last bike you ever own, but it will be your first! if you like the other bike better after you buy this one then you can always trade it for another later. Just pick whichever feels like it will be a better and more comfortable first bike for you. Best of luck!

Nicholas, what age bracket are you in? 18-25? 26-30? 31-40? That's usually the gauge I would use to recommend a bike. I'm not expert but I personally do not see an advantage to ride anything less then a 600cc bike. If I were buying my first bike and would be ok with a 600 then I would recommend the Suzuki SV650 with ABS. Not only is it a fun bike to ride but it's also a cool bike too and you won't want to give it away when you decide to move up. It'll be your first bike that you hang on to. Look up the reviews on youtube. If you're 30 or older then you may want to go with a Triumph Street Twin or Scrambler just for the extra speed but the Suzuki 650 is just a flat out, fun ride and it's even better with ABS. www.suzukicycles.com/Product%20Lines/Cycles/Products/SV650/2017/SV650A.aspx

Not sure why all of harely competition keeps ensuring hd success. Until other bike manufactures make bikes for those of us that are under 5-8, hd will continue to thrive. hd is the only place i can go get a really nice looking bike that is small low enough and yet gives me choice. I can choose from any bike they make as oppsed to the one or two made for shorter customers. I love this bike but will not be able to ride it as my inseem is around 26/27

I saw a guy who was shorter than my 5"6 get off a BMW GS1200, that's a tall bike. Why not just admit you love the old V-Twin and be done with it. No shame, plenty of bikes from other manufactures would fit you if you cared to look.

Not the case. My last bike was a suzuki hayabusa. It was a dream bike for me. Until I realized at every red light my nads would be stuffed into my throat. When a bike weights close to 600lbs doing the tipy toe nad saver dance at red lights crushes (no pun intended) the joy out of riding.

Flop? The bike was on backorder in dealerships worldwide for almost 6 months at launch... "April of 2015 was the best sales month in Ducati's history. The company delivered 7,309 units to customers, largely thanks to the new Ducati Scrambler finally becoming available. The Scrambler isn't just a hit in the Unites States, where its hipster marketing campaign seems to be working wonders, but it's also doing even better in Italy, where Ducati's sales were up 69 percent this April with the Scrambler not just Ducati's best-selling model, but the best-selling model in general."
