Ducati have just had the best start to a sales year ever and the reason is this little beauty; the Ducati Scrambler. Copying the style of the old 450 Scrambler of the 70's, it's a great road machine but can it possibly have any off-road ability? Is it all just a big marketing job?

I am looking for my first bike, about 5'10 to 11 and would like a super moto or a sport. I was looking at an r3 for a sport or a KLX250 SF for a moto. Any other recommendations for a first bike or which one I should get? I would prefer something with good gas mileage.
@You-Toober
@You-Toober 8 лет назад
Well (if you didn't make your decision yet), ask yourself where do you plan on riding the most? If it's the street, get the r3, if it's both dirt and the street, get the klx250 (wr250r is another good one to check out!). Another reason to get the dual-sport is because most likely will be cheaper to insure and maintain.

at 8:15 they show a Ducati that the makers of this video are claiming the new Scrambler is the descendant of- WRONG, that Model was a 450RT, totally different, NOT the original Scrambler at all!!!! Google Ducati 1974 450 SCR, then you will see why they copied the look....

Well in my country city bikes are under 300cc, this is for grand touring haha. All of the world now days follow US in their mega thinking. When did a 800cc bike became a city only bike? Insane. City bike should be light small, cheap on insurance and not a gas thirsty.
@adrianrubi5012
@adrianrubi5012 9 лет назад
Igor Raic ...You mean a city bike is a ktm duke 390 or 200? In south east asia a city bike is 125cc-to-150cc only and it's already enough.
@oldmangaming3715
@oldmangaming3715 9 лет назад
Well city bike is max 300cc no matter what model or brand. 250cc is quite enough thou. My country has cities with lots of hills so if you are a hevy dude than 250 is great. But i gues south africa is also very hilly country so they need 800cc for towns haha.
@SofairCZ
@SofairCZ 9 лет назад
Igor Raic Nobody said this is only a city bike. It's light with quite a lot of power, it's perfect for both city and weekend fun rides.
@zzDarkwingDuck
@zzDarkwingDuck 9 лет назад
Igor Raic cities in the US are not as small and compact as they are in asia. There is so much extra space in US that things are just bigger. A lot of commuting in the US also involves a highway, which a bike will need to be able to get up to 70 MPH quickly enough so cars don't bunch up behind you and maintain 70 mph without struggling.

Very deceptive video... but then the first Ducati 450 Scrambler in 1970's was also marketed deceptively... cycle magazines kinda made comments that made it sound fast, but it wasn't... and this was just before magazines started HP dynoing bikes which killed off about 75% of the earlier manufacturers... the video does point out, though, that it looked the part for its time... with the much-touted Desmo head, it would rev to 9,000 or more, but small cam, valves, ports, and carb. yielded power fade by a mere 4500 RPMs... about 18-20 HP with stock large, restrictive low muffler... 22-25 HP with a glasspack... about the same power as the first Honda watercooled 125cc dirt bikes with much less weight... Ducati really missed the boat by discontinuing the 4-cycle 450 Scrambler in 1974 instead of refining it and being way ahead of other manufacturers switching from 2-cycle to 4-cycle dirt bikes... Ducati singles could make power stock, they advertised a 250cc Diana street model at 30 HP... do that proportionally with the 450cc and it would have been a worldbeater in its day..!!!. In this video, they start out in the sand with a real 2-cycle MX bike of similar color to the Duke and it turns off to the left and makes it to the top of the sand ridge... then switches to the heavy 800cc 2-cylinder Duc under-tired café racer and it can't make it to the top and he turns off to the right halfway up... it's got enough power, but needs a real rear off road mud tire from a pickup truck...and check out what's happening at 5:05 in the video... Duck is spinning wildly, but not taking off, it's nearly stuck... they cut that scene off quickly... this thing needs mud tires to really have a chance in the sand... if you buy this bike, you'll be disappointed if you think it will do what they pretend it will do off road... if a paved road or hard packed dirt road is your intentions, fine, but forget the soft stuff... BTW, I owned the '74 Ducati 450 Scrambler... and '75 Ducati 750 Street bike which I would never consider taking off road, even with knobby tires... and this new bike reminds me of the basic early 750cc... Also, Ducati engines got ugly when they replaced the shaft driven drivetrain with whatever they're using now...

BMW had a thumper scrambler a few years back called the G650 Xcountry and it was more or less a flop. It was leightweight but way too underpowered next to this Ducati. A version based on the R1200 NineT will be too big and heavy to be considered an alternative to the Scrambler and it just wouldnt have the fun factor. They'd have to consider a different starting point such as the F800 which was the basis for the awesome yet discontinued Husky Nuda. That would be more comparable. Otherwise using the boxer engine might make it look like a successor to the HP2 Enduro. Just a whole other class of bike.
