Halifax, Nova Scotia, CANADA - 1990 World Figure Skating Championships, Ice Dancing, Free Dance - Isabelle and Paul Duchesnay of France won the Free Dance by earning five 6.0s in Presentation.
One of the most heart breaking, impressive, beautiful. powerful ever free skates. Gold Medal worthy - well- I think so. It sure is the one I can watch over and over again.
So much time has been spent since 1990, but my impression after more than 30 years is always the same: a unique, touching, impressive moment of pure art! Every time I watch this dance I feel goose bumps
This was indeed the Golden Age of Ice dancing. And this unbelievable performance of Duchesnay and Duchesnay, which mesmerized me more than 30 years ago, still does it every time I watch it again. A great couple with a great choreography by Christopher Dean.
Isabelle and Paul Duchesnay were the most powerful, ahead of their time ice dancers in the history of the sport. I never get tired of periodically watching their performances. They were the best ever; futuristic! I hope they are coaches or teachers of ice dancing so this now generation can learn from their wisdom. The Duchesnays RULE!
I remember falling in love with this performance 30 years ago and I am still watching it over and over again with the same pleasure and excitement, this is great dance, absolutely awesome !
Extraordinar!!!!
I remember the frustration at the corrupt judges as I watched these two skate incredible programs. But what I like to keep with me is the intense thrill I felt every time they stepped on the ice because I knew I was going to be watching something exciting.
Stunning choreography. Dean's work is genius. I watched Torvill and Dean perform Missing and saw mention of the Duchesnay pair skating the number. That brought me here. My mother used to say eat your vegetables before dessert. I never could get that right.
Yes! I came here from the mention in the T&D version. I agree that the Duschenay’s performance was less technically perfect than some of T&D’s. They weren’t as perfectly in sync, for instance. But I loved the increased tempo in the Duschenay version, and the passion they displayed, along with the additional lifts (both of these to accommodate various requirements in the amateur competition, I’m sure.) The increasing tempo along with the choreography and the passionate skating really ramps up the sense of anxiety, which I think makes this performance rival the original T&D version. It’s extremely effective in portraying the message. So grateful to be able to watch these performances here on RU-vid. Simply stunning. Thank you to this channel for posting these. They are treasures.
Every time I see this performance I cry, it just reminds me of what happened in my country when I was a child. and I witnessed it. I'm originally from Chile and this performance was perfect, Btw as a Chilean Canadian, I am proud of you both.
And the faces of the judges say it all - how happy they were so see the performance and mark it. The Duchesnay were never judges' pets. They simply didn't know what to do with these skaters. But at least the public knew what to do - love, admire and cherish them. They don't make skaters like that anymore.
Torvill & Dean in 1984 / Duchesnay & Duchesnay in 1988 - 1992 / Savchenko & Massot in 2018...Choreographie u. a. von Christopher Dean...Sportmomente für die Ewigkeit !!!
Absolutely amazing 😍 as a South American myself thank you for honoring all the victims of violence, the victims that were never seen again or found. Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
I am not a big fan of figure skating as a whole, but Ice Dance has always seemed more of an artform to me - no showy stuff like jumps or throws, just artistry - and this performance (took me ages to find it as I could not remember the name of the pair) was where my young brain actually got that. I just really enjoy the storytelling of ice dance.
I was swept away by this when I was 15, obsessed with it really :) I learned to play this music on my keyboard... But now when I watch it at 43, although it still pulls the same primordial strings, it seems so imperfect, with lots of moves unfinished and unpolished. And they look exhausted at the end! Still, this dance will ALWAYS be very special to me. Greetings from Croatia!
I have the same ... but watch Torvill and Dean performing this routine, recreated in reality for ice by Dean himself for Isabelle and Paul... you will have the greatness of this brilliant choreography and the technical excellence and deep emotion and artistry of T&D :) but maybe you already watched it?
Stupendi!
I remember watching this and thinking wow just watched it again I've gotta say it's freekin awesome love the music story they tell behind bolero definitely my next favourite 😍
They really were ahead of their time. The judges at the Olympics didn't know what to do with them and 'punished' them - then the ISU passed a bunch of new rules so nobody could do anything new or innovative ever again. Now all ice dancing looks the same. Only the costumes change.
Wonderful and moving performance. They gave absolutely everything and were exhausted afterwards - held nothing back. Inspiring for them to draw attention to the atrocities in South America. Shame current skaters play so safe now. Despite more fancy tricks, it looks like ice dance has gone backwards in very recent times. Their style was also so more modern than their contemporaries - massive contrast with the Russian pair that followed them wearing old fashioned, overstuffed costumes.
1990, Halifax, Canada.
What an excruciating ly beautiful happenings not only in missing in South America but the red dress in Canda reminds me of all our missing girls and women in our Indigenous community and residential schools since it's inception as thi September 20th 2022 represents Truth and Reconciliation. May the findings of these atrocities may set closure in order for the proper treatment is corrected with a healing love.. please let us pray for uprightness , wholesomeness and thus freedom from fear in our current endeavours. Duchesnays' immersion of ALL LEVELS brought tears to my eyes with so many mixed emotions IN ORDER TO endeavor the persistence for each individual to initiate their own development in coexisting to REST IN PEACE. KEEP THE WORD H E A L IN H E A L T H.
I was very young when I watched it, but I can say - I never saw something like this again. It was so perfect, so different, so special. They are still more modern with this dance than the most skaters today.
A truly unforgettable routine, where sport transcends into art and emotion. So many iconic moments from this dance are emblazoned on my memory... the subdued beginning... the intensity building... the spectacular end pose. Apart from the Torvill & Dean Bolero, this is the only ice dance that has made a lasting impression on me. Ever.
It's great opinion, Willem. I agree with you from the first to the last word. "...sport transcends into art...". To this sentence can not be anything to add. These are really unique moments in sport. T&D, D&D - greatest memorable couples. All the best for you.
It’s because this routine was created by C. Dean :) he made it memorably and transcendent, as their Bolero was, and as all the routines he created before and after, and danced with Jayne :) and he danced this theme too, (in a bit different way, as in the first part of choreography he adapter for Duschesnay) with Jayne of course, you can find it on RU-vid ..
It was 28 years ago when I first watched this dynamic pair dance this piece. I have never forgotten how beautiful this dance was. Very artistic and just plain beautiful
I saw this performance live and in person from Seat 10, Row O, Section 27 of the Halifax Metro Centre, Friday, March 9, 1990... We cheered ourselves hoarse. I watch it now all these years later and it still makes me smile.
I remember watching this for this first time as though it was yesterday - me and my mum were mesmerised by them and the music - so unique and fresh. A routine etched on my memory.
Just finished watching the 2018 Olympic free dance and for some reason I thought of this amazing program. There’s been nothing like it before or sense. Brilliant.
I was in Halifax at the event that evening. When the Duchenays finished skating, I truly was scared, because the screaming, cheering and clapping was so loud - I really thought the roof was going to cave in. You can't tell from the video, but it was so loud you couldn't even hear someone speak next to you. One of the finest achievements and moments in figure skating history
I'm jealous!! I would have loved to see this live, although I did get to see the Duchesnay's skate this on the Tom Collins skating tour at the time. Paul was one of the most mesmerizing male skaters ever....
Always thought it was the perfect proof of Canadian mediocrity that they were rejected by Skate Canada and so they went to skate for France-who presumably were more comfortable with iconoclastic brilliance.
I am not generally a jealous person, but speaking as someone who has avidly followed skating for over 50 years, I am jealous of anyone who was there to see the Duchesnays’ performance of Missing that night. I revisit this performance at least yearly. It is my favorite ice dance of all time.
I remember watching this "live", at least I think it was, and being totally enthralled by this performance. I was also glad the commentators were silent for the entire performance. They let us enjoy it !!
